the ultimate question: do I keep the MA1000 or can I be happy with the HA680 in its place?
I’ve had an awesome month - I've been able to hit waves for every session. so I’ve actually been looking forward to a flatwater sesh where I can try some Armstrong foils back-to-back in a somewhat controlled setting. so when the opportunity came up, I brought x2 new HA’s and x2 of my old MA’s to the beach HA580 foil Pleasure Bay in Boston for a little matchup. these are my thoughts…
gear ridden this sesh:
MA1000 foil
HA680 foil
HA580 foil
MA800 foil
75L v1 Armstrong FG board
795 HM mast, 10 in track
60 fuse
180 speed stab (red & blue shims)
4.5m v3 F-One STRIKE wing
5:4 Mahulu Stormrider wetsuit
Kaohi double coil grip leash & padded belt
Solite 8mm Custom 2.0 booties

Loved the video Jeremy! For a winger who’s been riding the same wing for years (GoFoil GL140), I have tried 2 new front wings, (GL 120 & RS1075). Holy Sh%t, what a difference my ride has been. Both higher speeds and a little unstable (GL120), but the RS 1075 was an eye opener.I rode it once before when it was nuking and I was overpowered with my 4.5m wing, not ideal conditions to try a new wing. This time I came back and made adjustments with mast position, as I ride with foot straps, and I’m in love🙄. Higher speeds, more glide, bigger jumps. Don’t know why I didn’t try it again sooner, but it was my wingman buddies wing that he didn’t use often… He sold it to me and I can’t wait for Sunday’s session as the forecast looks great. Thanks for another great video and keeping us stoked to get some winging action.

Dude that’s awesome! It so easy to stay with what you like and know, but changing things up also pushes progression, and your style def evolves! So stoked you are inspired by yr new ride… how was your sesh yesterday??

Like you I was mostly on the MA1000 until the new HAs were released. Even though I also had an 800, I mostly used the 1000. I ladded an 880 and 680. The 680 is now my daily driver. I already sold the 800. I should sell the 1000, but the market here in Australia is so poor for second hand kit, I’m not sure I want to sell it. I use the 880 for very low wind days (~10-12 knots). Anything above ~12 knots and I’m on the 680. I regret buying the 880. But it was the smallest HA2 available for a couple of months and I was itching to try them. I’ve not tried the 580. At my local spot a friend who used to use a 725 as his daily driver has happily switched to the 580 (but he was a good 10jg less than me). The 680 makes me smile every single time I use it. It’s nimble, fast, turns well, unbelievably low stall speed which is probably my favourite feature given how fast it is at the same time as it helps me to dig out of slow inside turns at our local spot which is cross-off.

YES!!! I totally agree with you. I’m not regretting the 880 cause it will get me out when the 680 cannot, or if I simply want more pump and glide. It’s nice to SUP foil waves, although I just used the 1180 for that and I was able to pump out to a 2nd wave for the first time. Planning on using that for DW. Be stoked on your 680. I truly believe it’s the most exciting and versatile foil they have. Thanks so much for the comment and I wish you an awesome rest of your week!

So much great info in that. I almost didn’t watch because it’s like a crowded space and all overlap But you nailed the whole point of the test. People are waiting to hear for their actual best use case. So 680 for light wind 💨 loud and clear. And yeah the MA just don’t have glide so again useless in lighter winds. Cheers 🥂 Well Done. Watched till the end

Woot woot, thanks bud, truly appreciated 🙏 and as you noticed… the 1000 is def for sale. Prolly gonna get it to a local for a steal. Need to save for a new board. Can’t decide between a 70L FG or a 75L ML. I wish they’d send me both 😜👍 cause the boards are too expensive for my wing dealer to stock and I’d love to try them back-to-back. Hope all is well and wishing you an awesome rest of your week!!

Despite that I don't ride Armstrong, fascinating to hear the way you review each wing. I sort of ride Axis, I used to use their aluminium masts but bent a couple. And I still use their fuselage. And I've ridden an Art and a couple of bigger wings testing other people's boards for them. But I like riding my own wings. BY now I have a lot. From 2022 to date I have 9 front wings I made not counting where I made more than one in the same mould. 5 of them I made with tubercles but in the end I decided that they were more trouble than they were worth in the manufacturing phase. I tried a super high aspect foil but I bend it like a bow riding it, you really need the super high modulus carbon for anything like that design. It's OK, after a shock the first time riding it I set it aside for months but tried it again some months later, It really just needs a lot lighter rider than me. Then I had another experimental foil, I wanted to see what would happen if I made a medium HA foil that had a relatively thick chord. So I did. Easy to pop up on foil but I feel the drag of the foil through my hands on the wind wing and it's glide and speed are poor. As per design *feature though, the stall speed is quite low. Then I made a couple more foils early this year and they really are my new go-to foils. Great glide, even my medium low aspect one and even though the other new one if faster, I prefer the lower aspect one because it has much better fooling-around factor. I have been blown away with how tight a turns I can make on it and stay on foil and yet go up wind well and have decent speed on it. But it is really good to have a day and just switch through the different wings and think about their different features and flaws as you have here. Change the wave period, change the amount of aeration behind waves, it's all going to affect the way you rate a foil. The last thing I changed this year was to make a fast carbon fibre mast. So happy. Especially with those running the 19mm standard Axis aluminium mast, when you start riding the high performance foils, that mast becomes the performance bottleneck. I think Armstrong has a lot of success simply from their low profile mast / fuselage / wing connection system but as a heavier rider the choice of a narrow diameter hex taper worries me, It's basically an allen key. And I do hear of them loostening, the side fixing should have been a front fixing to always maintain a snug fit. My own wings, I have a fattening algorithm for in the middle because the Axis fuselage front connection bites so much out of a wing.

Wow dude so much awesomeness here! I’m so stoked to hear you’ve been making your own foils for so long. It’s so nice to switch things up, and Armstrong’s developments have totally mirrored my progression. Maybe I’m lucky to have been riding them since their early days so it’s like I’m progressing with their designers. My current thing this year is looking at the DW stuff, so my pump game needs to be improved big time, and these are the best pumpers they’ve ever made. I remember starting on low aspect stuff when kiting and early winging… I miss them and fondly remember the way they turned. But speed and efficiency became a thing I was chasing and it’s been forever since I’ve ridden anything less than mid-aspect. I totally agree with you, the Armstrong attachment should be improved. I’m on my 3rd fuse in 3 years, I just got a new one to complement the new HAs and figured the tight connection was warranted. You can do some things to make them looser quicker, I know not to do that now so hopefully this one will last into the future! Thanks so much for taking the time to write all this, I love it. Keep in touch bud, I wish you an awesome rest of your week!

@@OCEANBOUND1 Thanks! sharing that design and on water passion! It's a tough decision for a manufacturer to update a fuselage. At their most basic, all they needed to do(Armstrong) was to change the front foil vertical screws to one screw on axis with the fuselage, to hold the taper tight in the socket. Or they could have used a lobed design instead of flat faces, like torx compared with allen key. With CAD what it is today, it's very easy to whistle up a compact high torque mast to wing interface shape, the hard part is going to be for the established manufacturers to explain that they just voided their old design compatibility. And yet, not a drama for Armstrong to simply do a sleeve conversion unit and issue new wings with a higher torque socket. I DIY so I'm a little ambivalent, Armstrong, Axis and I are all from New Zealand but I think every country has a local flavour of DIY with some national pride attached to it. Recent changes for Axis bring the front foil much closer to the mast for better yaw initiated steering, it's a game changer but Armstrong would loose maybe 10mm of that in an adaptor sleeve. I'm still refining my own designs but at 57 I'm not so reckless as to put aside my day job to do my own foil startup, especially when the market is currently at the hard place in terms of demand vs supply.

My daily drivers are HA925 &HA1125. Have a few sessions on MA800. The 800 is much loser turning-especially the yaw axis compared to ha v1. Just got HA680. Looking forward to it.
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 Месяц назад
Sweet bud, I’m sure you’ll dig the 680! The 800 is def looser (especially with the newer stabs) and likes to ride fast, but it’s a very white knuckle ride when you are at the high end. However that’s the one I feel can go the fastest. If you miss the 1125, the 880 would prolly be a great next step if you were interested. Let me know what you think of the 680 and I wish you an amazing day!!

I also did a back to back in good waves with the MA1000 and the HA 680. As much as I enjoyed the 1000, when I came in at the end of the day I decided I had no real reason to keep it. I think the 800 really shines in sizable waves with solid wind, but not enough to keep me off the 680
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 Месяц назад
YES! thanks bud, this def helps my decision-making process. or at least makes me feel like others are thinking the same things. that 800 is def my fastest foil but do I really need that? so curious how close I can get the 580 to the 800. that's one of my next tests... speed testing those two over longer sessions. stoked on these new foils! and on to the next thing... you getting a ML board?? lol.

@@OCEANBOUND1 yes, I ordered the 45L model. It will replace my 39 L prone board which I also like for strong wind winging. Only 17" wide! 😵‍💫

Great info! But give the 800 some more time, it’s like riding a short board on the wave and great for jumping. Not as good pop as the 1000 with the 180 but try the 205 also it improves landing and stallspeed . I had my highest jumps on flatwater on the 800/205. It likes constant high speed and I think a narrower board to enjoy the sharper turning radius this wing is capable of. I’m also hyped about the ha’s but soon it will pass and will get back to the 800.
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 Месяц назад
super cool to hear this! I can justify getting rid of the 1000 at this point, but I have a big hesitation getting rid of the 800. I have really only had a handful of big wave days days with the 800, and I'm sure I can get to a place where I'm happier with it. but the 580 would probably work on those days too. end of day, the MA's inspired me to ride differently because of what they are... but now that I ride differently, I feel like I still ride like that without the MAs. so how many sessions will I really be grabbing that 800 in the next year?? besides "testing" I'm not sure I'd grab it anymore. but I'll take yr advice and try a big wind jump sesh on it soon. thanks bud, I wish you an awesome rest of your weekend!!

What is your weight…? Thinking HA 780 do to weighing 82kgs or 180lbs. Any thought on weight being an issue and choosing from this range. 680-880
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 10 дней назад
Around 77kg or a little under 170. So the 780 would be a great one-foil quiver. You could always then go down to a 580 if you wanted something smaller/faster. Or, you could do 680/880 and be happy with those 2.

How do they compare to your chopped 925/sk8?
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 Месяц назад
So different. The SK8 to me is like a powerful surf foil, does everything you’d want it to, especially speed and juicy turns in waves. These new HAs are flatter, and they pump better. I’m guessing not as fast as a sk8. I’d say the SK8s prolly turn better if you compare similar sizes, but the new Armie HA’s have a ton of lift so you can ride smaller sizes. So I’d say pretty different. The sk8 matches the way I tend to ride, especially in the last year. The new HA’s are kinda where I’m currently at and where I wanna be: I need to up my pump game if I wanna start going deeper on the DW journey and these new HA’s are def the roadmap to get there, the pump is super initiative. Hope that helps, I wish you an awesome week!&

I'm very surprised about these results and the comments. Considering a 680cm wing as your biggest wing? I have a Sk8 950 and need at least 16+ knots to get going on it (75kg and choppy conditions). Below that I am on my old 1280 phantom. So can't imagine how people would ride these small sizes as light wind setup. Guess I should give these new high aspect wings a try. Maybe the new Eagle X or the new SS will be similar to these Armstrong HA wings?

lol I'm pretty much there. def can get rid of the 1000. the 800 is an enigma... I can justify reasons for keeping it but I really don't think I'd miss it. I've had only one or two wave sessions with it that made me so stoked to be on it, so maybe a better session would get me more stoked? but when it comes to waves, it's rare I need something so fast, so I'm pretty sure that 580 would work and I'd be just as stoked, if not more. so yeah, undecided but leaning towards getting rid of that one. thanks for watching bud, I wish you an awesome day!!

@@OCEANBOUND1 So, if you weren't surfing the swells..limited to flat water and wanted to jump in lighter winds 16 - 20 mph...would it be the ma 1000 or can the new ha 780 work for jumps as well, with easier get up ? I weigh 148 lbs and today in 16mph had enough speed on my hs 1850 to launch but i'm due for a smaller foil upgrade and thinking it's between these 2 🤔
