In Part 2 of our Thread Milling video, TRAKing Pat finishes programming the piece from Part 1 on the ProtoTRAK SMX Control. He then goes on to complete the entire Thread Milling process.
The machine we used for this Thread Milling whole demonstration is the TRAK DPM SX2P Bed Mill.

Hey Pat. was recently hired by my old boss, who's son is my foreman, now. The exact machine in this video is what they have me operating. They're really great guys, but I'll be using your videos in order to learn more and hopefully get on parr with my Boss' programming skills, if not surpass him. Thanks for the videos which will hopefully help me get decent raises in the years to come. Plus My competitive side wants me to be able to out perform my boss, but that's because we're old friends.

Hey Brad, Nothing wrong with a little friendly competition! Depending on where you are located, there may be other training available to you as well. Just check with your local TRAK representative. You can also take our online courses for a small fee. Check out all the options on www.trakmt.com Just type training in the search bar to see all the options. Glad to have you aboard! T.P.

@@trakingpat2750 Thank you, kind sir. I will definitely be checking everything out once a few paychecks roll in. My foreman speaks very highly of you and your teaching style. You were the first name he mentioned when I brought up YT videos. Thanks again, man. Have a good day Sir.

been there. done that. ok. single point tool. got it going, so went in and looked with clime milling, left hand thread, so went to bottom and tried it, proper thread. but the best is from the top and go down. yes its better to come from the botom but its cleaner from the top. like no sharp stuff its at the bottom

hey what about the threadmilling holders with only one insert? i just got a scandanavian tool system thread miling holder ? is that the same principle ? i also have a SECO thread milling holder with THREE inserts that looks like a normal threadmill thanks

Fred, No difference in single point. Everything is controlled by the pitch of the thread. T.P.

I am thread milling a 3/8 - 18 NPT female thread. Do I adjust the Major diameter for the thread size like you did in the video? What major diameter do I program? Do I use E1 = 0.627"
@trakingpat2750
@trakingpat2750 5 лет назад
Robert, I have to admit that I am not an expert on NPT threading however, I can see that the E1 dimension is the point where the thread becomes hand tight. To accomplish this, I think you are spot on that adjusting the major diameter would be the best way to achieve this. Because the thread milling cycle does not account for a tapered hole, I would think that you would have to drill or bore your ID to the minor diameter and then use an NPT thread mill to create the thread. As for the .627" dimension, I'm honestly not sure. T.P.

i have an old lath with out a led screw it cuts it threads . using the rack om the lath which in ten drive a shaft & cuts threads determined by the banjo. No threading deal. I want to cut third's using the rotary motion of the chuck & a Dremel to drive the thread Mill could you give me some advice My dermal will be 3000 rpm . is that to fast ?

@trakingpat2750 2 года назад
Les, I don't know where to start. It sounds like you are asking me how to do thread grinding on a manual lathe...Am I correct? This is a video on how to cut threads on one of our ProtoTRAK milling machines so I don't see the relationship here. My best advise would be to talk to your local TRAK representative and have him show you which of our machines would best best fit the work that you are trying to accomplish. T.P.

How about MDI THE PROGRAM?? Can you send a sample threadmill program for MDI? and/or post? Thanks
@trakingpat2750
@trakingpat2750 3 года назад
Big Beau, If you're looking for the program, it is shown in Thread Milling (Part 1). Otherwise, I am assuming that you are asking if you can create a treadmill program in your CadCam and then run it directly in your TRAK control. All you have to do is create the proper post processor or get it from CadCam supplier. You will want to open the file with a .GCD extension which will tell your TRAK control that it is a G-Code program. The control will run it in G-Code with no issues. Does this answer your question? T.P.

how can I cut a 3/4-14 NPT using a thread mill cutter or is it not possible? Could I usde a single point and cut an NPT?
@trakingpat2750
@trakingpat2750 4 года назад
Melvin, If you're creative, you could do this by first, making the hole with the proper angle in it. After that, you can buy an NPT tread mill and then use the standard threading event. What will happen is at the top of the hole, the tool will not cut until it gets deeper into the thread. As you go deeper, the thread mill will match the taper of the hole. Another way to do this would be to program this in G-code just as you would in most other CNC mills. I believe that with G-code, you can do this with a single point cutter but otherwise, you will need a multi-point cutter with the angle built into it. T.P.

why are you using this like a single point cutter?
@trakingpat2750

The programming is the same whether you use a single point tool or a multi point tool. I could've started farther into the hole if I wanted to but for instructional purposes, this was easier to explain for those who have never done it. T.P.

Hi Pat I think your channel is great. I hope you don't mind a little feedback. If you are looking at ways to improve your channel I suggest you have a look at Joe Pieczynski on the following link. ru-vid.com/show-UCpp6lgdc_XO_FZYJppaFa5w Could you please start your videos by showing us where the zero reference point is on the job. Also since the majority of the planet use the metric system, a few videos based on mm would be appreciated. In Australia we went metric 47 years ago. Keep on tracking !! Cheers John
