We are FORCED to leave Brazil & SAIL SOUTH into the teeth of a South Atlantic Ocean STORM. We hide from 50kt winds only to have a fishing boat THREATEN our safety!
Southern Ocean storms pack a punch as they draw cold air up from the Antarctic & Tierra del Fuego region of Patagonia (where we are headed). We set sail in a tight weather window. Watch to see what we do to stay safe, as we seek safe harbor in an sketchy anchorage full of container ships, before a dangerous fishing vessel dragging its ancient technology fisherman style anchor makes life a lot more challenging!

About Us
It was never part of the plan to make videos on RU-vid or become influencers, but we are so excited that we decided to create content. We love to share our knowledge and experiences with you! We have all types of videos from fixing repairs, to sail trim, to relaxing videos to asmr long form sailing content. Come sail away with us every Sunday Morning.
Kate and Curtis both learn how to sail when they were young. Kate was a junior sailor in Opti's and 420's while Curtis went cruising in the Great Lakes with his family. We met while sailing in a Melges 24 regatta and have been sailing together ever since. The first time we went cruising together as a couple was on a friends borrowed J Boats J 105 in the North Channel of Lake Huron and Canada (part of the Great Loop). Those few weeks, and watching other channels like Gone With the Wynns, Sailing Uma, Project Atticus, Delos, Nahoa, and Sailing La Vagabonde, convinced us that the sailing life was for us.
We bought our boat, a J Boats J/46, in 2019 after spending years searching for the perfect bluewater sailboat to sail around the world. We were interested in a catamaran and monohulls, but loved the performance cruising design of the J(it is faster than most cruising catamarans). We spent six months refitting her in Rhode Island, before selling our house and cars, quitting our jobs, and leaving land life for good to become digital nomads, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn.
We have since navigated over 12,000 miles together, through storms, big waves, pandemics, and lockdowns. We sailed to Maine, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Grenada, Sint Maarten, the Azores, Canary Islands, and Brazil, on our way south to Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile to sail around Cape Horn and into the Patagonia fjords.
We never intended to become influencers or start a new RU-vid sailing channel, but now it is what we do. We love sharing our experience and adventures with you. We have learned to fly the drone and edit videos, trying to produce relaxing and listenable videos for you to sail away and watch at home while having coffee on Sunday mornings. We hope we can inspire you to achieve your life goals and cross off those bucket list items also!

@@SailingSweetRuca No the long ads do not add anything, your content is plenty. Think some advertiser's know very few people are going to watch a 5 minute long ad, so they get their name out there, with no cost when people click away. I do watch all of the ads with the mute on for the channels like yours I like. At 93 Mom lives alone, still drives & could pass for late 60's, I tell her she looks younger than her kids & does except for my sister with those same genes.

I’m sure the battleship the “Graf spee” was scuttled in Montevideo harbour. When I went there decades ago, you could see a few sunken ships sticking out of the water.
@SailingSweetRuca
@SailingSweetRuca Год назад
Ahhh! We read a bit about this in the history of Uruguay. Apparently it almost drew them into WWII as it was allowed into the harbor and the USA wasn't too happy about it, or something like that? Cool that you know of it!
@Cptnbond
@Cptnbond Год назад
That was scary with the close encounter with the fishing boat. I'm glad it turned out well in the end. I'm not surprised that making sounds and having the strength of the wind in the nose does not work. Sound is just air pressure waves. Cheers.
@SailingSweetRuca
@SailingSweetRuca Год назад
Cheers! You are right on about the horn! Maybe we need a bigger one? We wish we had the whole fishing boat encounter on video, but we missed recording some in "emergency" mode. It was 100% going to hit us, so we had to quickly get the engine on and we turned hard to port at full throttle with our anchor down. We missed by inches as we could almost touch the huge wooden fishing boat. We were really worried their propeller or rudder would snag our chain and tie us together.

@SailingSweetRuca
@SailingSweetRuca Год назад
Hi Earl. The snubber is just longer. More length = more stretch vs our day anchoring snubber. Stretch is good in big waves and gusty winds in an open anchorage. The downside of a longer snubber is more sailing at anchor and more salty & slimy wet rope aboard. No worries ;-) Does one ever stop fixing a sailboat?

@SailingSweetRuca
@SailingSweetRuca Год назад
Thanks Bill! Coffee was excellent this morning :-) We can sail about an angle of 40 degrees into the wind, a few degrees more if there are large waves, past that we need to motor, or tack back and forth in a zig zag pattern to make progress against the wind.

Katie! Look at the fingers on your right hand. If you continue to release the anchor like that your going to loose them in the chain. Stand up girl hold fast with both hands and push anchor with your foot. That was a close call for you weather you know it or not. Stay safe and try to enjoy your cruising.
@SailingSweetRuca
@SailingSweetRuca Год назад
You are right on James! Good eye and thank-you for looking out! Normally we don't free fall the anchor, but we had the clutch open as we used it for the bow mooring line in Itajai and forgot to tighten it! A good learning experience, and evidence of just how quickly things could go from OK to terrible with a just small mistake.

As World Cruisers you know that anchoring in any protective harbour where fishing vessels also run to ,, that you are the tourist in their bay. Most likely your intuition was right that you were sitting on that ledge where THEY usually anchor and have anchored for the last 25 years in storms. While Portuguese fishermen are very kind and polite and would never carelessly want to hit your vessel,, it is up to you to protect yourself at all times. From my experiences in other countries of Central & S. America , that is not always the case. Often when a cruiser infiltrates the harbours of long time residents,, they could care a less if they hit you. The wondrous joys of world cruising is always full of challenges and stresses. Hey I never did hear if you knew exactly what you hit on your Atlantic East-West crossing. From the markings it did look like a partially submerged shipping container. My curiosity would have had me Heave-To and inspect and then retrace route and try and find it.... Often those containers might hold a valuable bounty. The treasure hunter in me would think , Hmmm, 5000 bluetooth speakers, or 1000 drones , or 2000 laptops or even 1000 cases of baked beans. 😂 But, sometimes curiosity can kill the cat too. Well alls well that ends well Fair Winds & Sail On Guys ! SV Jaz

Hi Chris! Hope all is well aboard SV Jaz! The local guys were pretty cool about the whole thing. They were pretty happy there was no collision. Smiles all around once the adrenaline wore off. We agree though, need to take care on others home turf. We will never know exactly what we hit. Luckily the damage wasn't too bad.

You might consider installing a hailer. Horn and loudspeaker all in one. Its so cool to yell ;"thanks for the wake job, I'll smoke a stogie now and call you tomorrow!" Also the rope you were using to take the load off your chain during the storm looks a little overstressed. You might consider two if you have two forward cleats and have the time when you anchor, or maybe making a bridle with a Mantus chain hook or something. Cheese and Butter sandwiches look surprisingly good, especially without blood and finger parts.
