Sadly it won’t and speaking as a retired firefighter we shouldn’t be blaming anyone for the tragedy. You can’t watch your children every minute 24/7 and even if you teach and tell them the dangers the kids will still do silly things. I live in Bude and watch the local kids here around the sea pool and I’m surprised that there aren’t more tragedies around ponds, lakes and near the sea every day. I’ve seen adults go onto ice and go through it many times and we all have said that they should know better but it’s just human nature. Condolences to all of the bereaved families. 😢

So did I, my family would have had no idea i was on the frozen lakes close to home or with my best friend and her older brother and his friends at the extremely deep lakes that was once sand and gravel pits, i was 10-11 yrs old and never have stood a chance if i had fell in.

They would have been surrounded by ice, their body would be going into shock and they would have been panicking. Did you do the "ice bucket challenge"? I did, that cold water being poured over my head really took my breath away, I can't imagine my full body being plunged into sub zero degree waters. I just feel so very sad for them all.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My parents were bereaved of their 16 month old daughter about a year and a half before I was born. This is 55 years ago and the confusion in my life and strangeness of my family, I now see and understand.

He slipped on ice and fell down an embankment into a raging river. It was 2 days before he was found but we are deeply grateful he was and not carried out to sea. Even now, 20 years on, I weep over any drowning. Yet, when I see folk being saved from drowning...I cheer. 💕💕💕

I'm so so sorry. I've heard one lad got stuck and his friends went back to help him.😔I'm guessing they probably weren't breathing when they got them out, but children have survived some incredibly low temperatures before. So the emergency services probably kept working on them in hopes that when their core temperature returned to normal they'd survive.

Indeed the deaths were preventable. Supervision isn't absolutely necessary if children are taught to exercise caution sufficiently and to always check the strength of ice prior to going on it. Obviously this country doesn't get a lot of snow/ice in general so the teaching opportunities are scarce.

Totally in agreement. My heart goes out to the family's and friends of these young boys, and I'll keep them in my thoughts. But as a mother of four, personally I wouldn't let my children out at that age unsupervised. It's not safe in this day and age, let alone the chance of accidents happening.

@@choosim6858 And why not? Here in Switzerland, the kids (pre-school and older) go out in all sorts of weather .. some supervised and other not. I don't see many / any kids fooling around in Winter on slippery River Banks, Steep Snow / Ice covered Inclines and such. Why not? Inter alia, because they have been suitably Educated .. Parents and School and generally comply.
