Three Dog Night is an American-Irish rock band from the 60's-70's. This band had a lot of energy. They had 3 guys with great voices that could all sing lead vocals. They had a lot of great songs such as "Mama Told Me Not To Come", "One" (written by Harry Nilsson), "Just An Old fashioned Love Song", "Eli's Coming", "Shambala", "Never Been To Spain", "Try A Little Tenderness", "Easy To Be Hard", "The Show Must Go On" etc.
You've done it now. This was one of the biggest selling bands of the 70's with a long string of hits, starting with "One" in 1969. They were & still are beloved by a gazillion of us who grew up in that era. So of course we'll need more! You started with just a fun, silly song that doesn't really showcase their talents. Another fun & downright funny song is "Mama Told Me Not To Come". "Never Been To Spain" is an all around great song. "Try A Little Tenderness" shows you what a great Blues & soulful singer Cory Wells was. "Shambala" & "Black & White" give you the hopeful, hippie vibe with Danny Hutton (from Ireland) leading the way. "Eli's Coming" is...well, you've just got to hear it. All three guys singing their hearts out. "Celebrate" is simply musical happiness. And "Cowboy" is beautiful & sad, with Chuck Negron's gorgeous voice highlighted. Oh, & the aforementioned "One", their first #1 hit, is required listening for anyone with the slightest interest in the band or the musical landscape of that era in America. Really hoping you do more & respectfully requesting that you don't make us wait too long to see what you think. As always, much love from Kentucky U.S. 💙🇬🇧🇺🇸💙🐕🐕🐕🌚(get it?)💙
Written by actor songwriter Hoyt Axton. His Mother wrote Elvis' Heartbreak Hotel. They are the only Mother / Son combo, who have both written No. 1 songs.
Joy to the World dominated the charts and radio in the Spring of 71. So much so, that it earned the #1 record designation from Billboard for the entire year.
The band behind the singers were most of the changes. The 3 singers were to core for a long time. All 3 were lead singers and took turns on their many hits. This was put out during the "Jesus Movement" of the late 1960's. They sang a lot of different styles.
Thanks, Brit boys! Three Dog night had a lot of great songs... and this one is totally "gospel". in its theme... You are quite young to have heard this.. lol
NO! This was not about religion, but simply about joy to everyone in the world with peace and understanding of each other and their personal thoughts. This band made covers of songs that were better than the originals.
Just an FYI: ELVIS does a killer cover of "Never Been To Spain", live, one of Three Dog Nights golden hits! This group has quite a repertoire of hits under their belt. American Classic rock radio loves this band! THANK YOU! Enjoying your Channel!
If I remember my Casey Kasem (American Top 40) he may have told me the band’s name referred to an Alaskan (could be northern Canada) night and temperatures. If it was just a cold night you’d sleep huddled with one dog. Colder two dogs. If it was frigid it was a three dog night. Now back to the countdown. Guys it was a Billboard #1 for multiple weeks! They had a good number of hits, too.
Hoyt Axton told the story that he was traveling with the group and he'd written this song but it didn't really have any lyrics...so they made up a bunch of stuff that rhymed, intending to change the lyrics later, but it worked so well....they just left it alone. True or Hoyt having some fun...who knows, but its a good story..LOL
A monster #1 hit in 1971. A purposely silly song written by talented singer/songwriter/ actor Hoyt Axton presumably for a children's TV show that never came about. The group was friends with Axton and took a liking to the song and played with the lyrics. The recording was hard to resist. (The original opening lyric was "Jeremiah was a prophet.")
A lot of music bands either covered or created their own Christmas songs from that era. If you want to listen to rock music from that time, watch The Midnight Special.
The title comes from a British expression. The number of dogs told you how cold it was- a 3 dog night was pretty cold🥶. How seriously can you take a song that starts with this lyric😂. It was pretty big in the US - summer beach song- good for dancing. Better songs by them and different sound “ Never Been To Spain” “Mama Told Me (not to come) “Eli’s Coming” “Shambala” Always humor or irony in their music.
I'm not sure how I missed this one. You can't go wrong with Three Dog Night. They are the only band I know of that had three lead singers, and all were REALLY good. I have every album they ever released (15 ) in my collection. Some of their other songs you may want to check out are "One" (is the loneliest number), "An Old Fashioned Love Song", "Shambala", "Black and White", "Never Been To Spain", "Mama Told Me Not To Come", "Eli's Coming", "Easy To Be Hard", "Out In The Country" and "Pieces Of April". The change in members were mostly after they reunited in 1981. One of the best bands from the early 70s. They had 21 Billboard Top 40 hits between 1969 and 1975, with three hitting number one, and if I remember correctly, each sang by a different lead singer.
Wow. A 7.6 for one of the most iconic songs from the 70's.. You definitely need to check out more 3 Dog Night. Looks like you've received a lot of suggestions. I would strongly suggest "Never Been to Spain" in order to hear the incredible range of their voices. Especially Corey Wells. As was mentioned, Corey, Chuck Negron, and Danny Hutton are the three vocalists who take turns on the various songs from Three Dog Night.
This is probably arguably their biggest hit. They were a huge band. This was one of my mom's favorite albums when I was growing up. Thanks for the good memories guys! 😊 I can't speak for the UK but the 70s fashion here had to be one of the worst of all modern recorded history!!😂 As for some of the lyrics probably proof positive of open use hallucinogenic drugs in the era.😅 The overall message though is something I think is more important now more than ever. The musicality of it's great too! Other great songs of theirs would be Mama Told Me and Never Been to Spain. Nice tease about a Journey reaction you two threw in there!😮
That brought back great memories. Loved that band. I was a teenager late 60s early 70s. All their songs were easy to sing to.And now I know how they got their name❤🇨🇦
This song was #1 for 1971 in USA. Unfortunate that you didnt know that those guys clapping are also singers, frontmen Cory Wells and Danny Hutton. All amazing vocalists. The band consisting of Joe Schermie, bass, Micheal Alsup, guitar James Greenspoon, Keyboards and Floyd Sneed drums. You can't get any better. Please check other songs by them.
I have always liked 3 dog night. I went to see them in concert one time, in 1977, and once was quite enough. I think the bass player had crabs because if he wasn't playing he had his hand down the front of his pants scratching. Just never had the desire to ever see them live again.
My grandfather bought us the vinyl and we played it, along with the Oakridge Boys, Willie Nelson, and Pac-Man Fever non-stop. And this was way before Bluetooth…. But there were like 18 of us kids among siblings and cousins, and we heavily outnumbered the adults…. Lol. Such a great time and this song is a legit jam.
Great reaction! Three Dog Night was a very versital band with three lead singers. I was 8 when this song came out and it was very popular with kids because of the lyrics and clapping. Other songs of theirs that I like include: "Never Been to Spain", "One", "Mama Told Me not to Come", and "Black and White".
This is the first song I really remember hearing as a young child. It was a massive hit-played on radio day and night. I LOVED it then and I love it 50+ years later. It’s a joy of a song.
As others have noted, you'd probably get the vibe better if you started with one of their other hits -- "Never Been to Spain" or "Shambala" or "Eli's Coming" or "One" or "Mama Told Me Not to Come" or "Just An Old-Fashioned Love Song"... so many hits. Technically a cover band, but persistently successful.
Hoyt Axton had written this as beginning “Jeremiah was a prophet” but TDN didn’t like the “prophet” when he approached them with the song. In fact, two of the three main vocalists - Danny Hutton and Cory Wells - rejected the song outright, but Chuck Negron felt that the band needed a "silly song" to help bring the band back together as a working unit. (The first four albums from the group were released in the span of just 18 months, and yielded 10 Top 40 hits. However, the band was stressed and tired and beginning to fracture.). With Axton’s blessing, they sat around brainstorming different words until someone suggested “bullfrog”, and it stuck. The band referred to this as their “kid song” or “silly song” and broke with tradition in recording it. Normally, only the three vocalists sang, but in “Joy to the World” all seven band members sang. They had no great expectations for the song other than to have fun and to “be silly”. However, it shot to #1 where it remained for six weeks, and it became Three Dog Night’s signature song. (Axton also wrote “Never Been to Spain”.) I think “Jeremiah was a bullfrog“ as the beginning line was actually a stroke of genius that made the song a hit. It was an unforgettably bizarre hook at the very beginning of the song. (I was just entering high school when the song was released, and immediately people were laughing about it, talking about it, discussing what the first stanza meant - and singing it.) The hook of that first line combined with the catchy tune and the memorable chorus made the song an immediate singalong favorite.
Black and White is another great one from Three Dog Night. It's relevant today. Saw these guys in concert a month ago; they are still touring. And they were FANTASTIC still! Lots of gray hair, in their 70's but still having so much fun!
It was just a silly fun song. Something to make you laugh and feel good. I always pictured Jeremiah was someone who had a croaky froglike sounding voice.
My understanding is that it started off as the theme song for a children's show that never got made. Three Dog Night liked it and put some work into it.
The album with this song was the very first album I ever owned. This one is very bouncy and light-hearted but other of their songs were much more complex. “Liar,” Eli’s Coming,” “One,” “Momma Told Me Not to Come,” and many others. I actually have their greatest hits album on vinyl! Trivia: I grew up in a very fundamentalist church and this song was spoken of FROM THE PULPIT as anti Christian song because the name of the bullfrog was Jeremiah. I hope you will check out some more of their music. More inane info: I sang this to my children as a lullaby when they were babies. 😊
@sherryarflin726 Aha, So I know "Mama told me not to come" but the cover version by Tom Jones. Now I know who did the original. Makes sense now. Cheers
I don't know which of your faces I'm loving more, B1 you look intrigued, while B2 looks skeptical. I love you 2 Brits! You have to check out their song "Mama told me not to come"' and "Shambala". There's plenty from them! 🤘🤘🐾🐾 🐾🐾 🤘🤘 LOVE IT LOVE IT! Mustache rides??
Played this at every high school football game I went too in the 70's and 80's (and I was a band kid from elementary school so I went to them all)! Also, I was born in '71! Also have this on OG press vinyl (thanks Dad).
They were a 7 member band with 3 lead singers. (That's probably why 25 different members, not all were singers ) Church Negron was the lead singer for this song. He officially left the group 1985.. Corey Wells ( to the left of Chuck in light colored clothes) passed away 2015. Danny Hutton (to the right of Chuck) is the only original singer left in the group. He is still touring under the name Three Dog Night. Each took lead depending on the song and whose voice most suited the song.
It was a silly song that was fun to sing along with. The guys could all belt a song and the music was solid we knew what it was ,optimism wasn’t ridiculous back when
This song was played at about every wedding dance I attended in the early to mid 1970s. This is te weirdest of their hits. They had wonderful voices and many great songs
I need a little bit of clarification . Did sound drunk or like Bill Cosby or Bill Cosby when he’s drunk 😂😂😂😂 Awesome reaction ❤ I have heard this song about 100 times but it’s the first time I saw what the band looked like 😁👍✌️
Oh, bad call Brit Pops! LOL! "Jeremiah was a bullfrog!" was the rallying cry for all the kids and teenagers 50 years ago! You could count on a verse or two being howled by all involved when that was sung! Definitely not a curio song at the time or now for every kid who grew up back then. I'm 66 now and still remember every word, ha, ha, ha! 🤣😂🎸🎸🎙👀😎
Always enjoyed 3 Dog Night growing up and saw them in concert twice around 2007 and 2013 I think. Chuck Negron left the band and was heavily addicted to drugs. He finally got sober and performed solo. Cory Wells died in 2015. I was not a fan of this song as I thought they had some others that displayed their harmonizing skills much better. But still, I enjoyed the reaction. Well done as always. I'm no talent agent, but just what I heard in this reaction from BP1 tells me he's ready to do a solo tour. Rock on!!!
@Hawk-ODA212 I have to admit, I had never heard the name before, perhaps I know the well known songs, but didn't know the band name. We need to follow up, "Never been to Spain" seems to be the winner from the comments.
Just an old fashioned love song was another hit.Acid Rock.Another group you should check out in the era was The iron Butterfly,In a Gada La Vida ,or check out the Jefferson Airplane ,the song White Rabbit ,and the song Lather.
Hey guys, great reaction. They have many great songs. Please investigate further. Songs like: "One", "Black and White", Easy to be Hard. Thank you - mush love to you an the channel.
Talking about sounding 'gospely,' I've googled this and couldn't find the source. But back in the 1970s I found sheet music that had a similar song. As a kid, I didn't pay attention to the composer or lyricist. The lyrics were Jeremiah was a prophet. Moses was a prophet too. Jesus was the son of god and man, and his love shines out to you. Joy to the world. All the boys girls. Joy to the children of galilee. Joy to you and me. As I recall, the music was the same as the 'three dog night' song. Does anyone recall the composer or lyricist?
A Bullfrog is a person with a low voice and to you it sounds like they mumble. Therefore he was a bullfrog that he didn't understand. But he had great wine that he shared as he told stories.
