This video demonstrates three easy ways you can fix a botched or messed up foot on the Potter’s Wheel. My students have limited time in class and on the wheel, and sometimes they just don’t have enough time to redo a project, and we need to take a shortcut (not the best!) way to save a piece!
The following are the three methods I show are:
#1 Cutting a notched foot like a colander- see this video link for a colander video:
• Throwing, Trimming, an...
#2 Cutting off the botched foot and replacing it with a coil and then throwing it- see this video link if you’d like to see a very similar technique when throwing a goblet with a stem:

#3 Cutting off the foot entirely, and replacing it with little legs. If you’d like to see a related video of this technique, you can see my Faberge inspired slip trailed egg here:

I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 29 years, the past 21 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I started my RU-vid channel to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!

This is great, I still often mess up trimming, really helpful to keep these skills in my back pocket. I am feeling pretty frustrated about 2 years in because I feel like I'm still making novice mistakes. I am obsessed with pottery and I just want it to become more natural, this is helpful, I don't have to be as stressed out about mangling a foot. THANKS

Do you happen to have a syllabus for your kids that could be shared? Do you happen to know if the knock off Giffin Grip works well? I just can’t afford the Giffin Grip brand name.

Karan, when you removed to foot, how did you do that? I always mess up my pots when I wire cut them off the bat. I don't hold the wire flat a'd low enough and then I have an indent in the bottom. When I try to trim my tool always catches in that spot. How can I trim it flat?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 4 года назад
Good question... #1 I always tell my kids to make sure their wire is pressed firmly against the bat- I tell them not to use the handles of the wire, but to wrap it around their fingers to get a tighter grip on it to press it down just on either side of the pot as they pull it... and not to lift before they are done cutting all the way across. #2 if it is truly not level to begin, as if the wire has really cut it unevenly, I show them they can use a shredder or surform to even it up by hand before they start to trim. #3 When trimming, it is crazy important (I can't overestimate that) to have your hands super stable, locked together, elbows braced, and I also hold the tool in my right hand as well as brace the tool with my left. Lots of locking, stabilizing to keep it steady. Lastly, if you have done all that, try using a different edge of your trimming tool... they way I show in the beginning of the video is I typically use the back corner- or the corner of the tool farthest from me when holding it to do my cutting action. Hope that helps some!

@@KaransPotsAndGlass yes, that definitely helps. I'll make sure to wrap the wire around my fingers. The tip with the shredder is genius!!

Hi Karan. I think I know why I recently started wiring off badly. I got bats (before I threw on the wheel head, so working with bats is new to me) and assumed I didn't need to wire them off immediately. So I wired them before trimming. But since the clay is too hard I always messed up. Starting to wire them off immediately to have flat bottoms again.

Yay!!! That’s great news!! Now, don’t be surprised if you find you actually have to wire them off a second time after it’s leather hard! But because you have the pre-existing cut, it should cut easily!

Hi Karan, I really like your video's. I teach kids pottery classes at my house in Maui. I've also starting teaching a women's class one evening a week. I make crab cakes, brie, crackers etc. and the women bring several bottles of wine...Lol! I get to teach them everything I have learned from you! It seems like there are so many people wanting to do pottery and I was able to hire a friend to help me with my classes. I really like your boxing and shipping video. After I watched it, I removed the Free shipping from my Etsy site and ironically got two orders. Thank You!

Useful information. Difficult when slightly asymmetrical pot hops out of place during trimming. Hard to reposition it correctly. Probably need to throw properly first!
