This guy is so fkn good. I been playing professionally for 30 years, and this is where I come to break out of those plateaus or ruts. In my opinion, he's the best guy on RU-vid. He's gentle and soft-spoken, but he's truly a monster on our instrument.
I have been playing for 30 years too and Modes finally make sense to me. Kind of breaking the rut but still have more questions about techniques to use modes to sound more melodic.
I've been playing for 40 yrs. and this is where I come for great news ideas as well! Signals Music Studio, with Jake Lizzio, is a great channel to learn some great stuff also. Jake goes deeper into the theory of things and is soft spoken, but breaks everything down, so an illiterate music theory dude like me can understand it.
Awesome lesson !! I am digging back in your collection of videos and finding all kinds of Gems that I have somehow missed !! Thank you for all you do , Dave !!!
When the penny drops and the universe is in sync, the mind creates some wonderful melody's. this is how i felt after watching this video. thank you so much for your wisdom.
Thank you so much - I love getting messages like this! I'm very glad that these lessons and videos are inspiring and helping people. That's what this is ALL about! Thanks again and stay tuned for more lessons and material! : )
I spent 30 minutes trying to learn that lick by ear and watching your fingers. I finally let the video play and realized there was tab. Amazing lesson! 🤦🏻♂️ I will now go back and watch the rest of your videos. I’ve been on a huge Lydian kick lately. Thank you!! 🤘🏼
Thank you my friend for the arpeggiated patterns in the ol' lydian tonality love you're approach to teaching and for sharing your wisdom another great useful video
I've gotta admit, when this video started and the chords started being introduced, I instantly thought of Screaming Trees. How about a little lesson about the Conner brothers?
Frank Zappa - water melon in Easter hay !!! When I listened to this song I thought we’ll this is different animal. Why? Figured out it is all Lydian. Kind of interesting mode. Better with Zappa than with the Simpsons… thanks Dave. I love so much your videos and personality
Thanks for being so cool about everything. I just learned a lot about my favorite mode. Your students are extremely blessed to have you guiding them. I feel blessed just to have found your lesson online. Thanx.
Joe Satriani's Flying in a Blue Dream is an omage to Lydian. I drove my guitar teacher crazy to teach me Modes. He gave me the scales then turned it over to me to figure out how to use them. I was utterly confused then 30 years later they became clear to me.
Steve Vai studied with Joe Satriani for three years from the time Vai was 14 years old. Satriani is also a major proponent of the Lydian Mode. Thus, it's a fair bet that Vai's affinity with the Lydian Mode might have come a wee bit from Satriani before he ever met Zappa.
Only took me umpteen years to stumble onto your channel, but damn, right up my alley. Every vid and lesson is great man. Thank you! Can't wait to dig into the rest of your vids and the ones to come.
This mode has been getting a work out a lot with me lately. I tend to think of Satch when I hear the Lydian for some reason. I highly recommend Gambale's Modes - No More Mystery for those trying to understand modes. Great instruction on how to use modes.
I absolutely love your guitar lessons! Please keep them coming. However, I was wondering if you could do a video (or perhaps a few videos) on how you achieve your guitar tone? I absolutely love it & would greatly appreciate if you went through all the settings that you have with your tone coming from the app that you're using. It's marvelous!
Awesome lesson. I've been playing and flirting with this area a lot. The first arppegio was very helpful for me. I knew the rest. I've been studying and mapping out Lydian 7th arppegios. (1,#4,5,7). Also locrianb7 (1,b2,b5,b7), and phrigian b7 (1,b2,5,b7) or with out the 7ths. Really great sounding intervals to just slide around and have fun with. I've noticed all 3 are a lot alike depending on how you use them. There is not much info on these chords. Even in the guitat grimour of chords and arpeggios there is nothing. Lots of fun! Thanks for the lesson video!
Curious, 1985 off Band on the Run, is that song Lydian? Old fart here starting late, thanks Mr Brewster. I was getting "stuck' and your stuff has left me inspired again. Ultimate compliment I think
Whenever film or TV composers need to let you know something "magical" is going on they use the lydian mode. It puts you in the mind for faeries. Or, someone falling in love.
pls correct me if i am wrong, but i think in the 1st arpeggio, the note which you refered as the 7th note is actually the 2nd or the 9th note. and thanks for the great video! : D its amazing : )
Question. Wouldn’t a sharp 4, also be a flat 5? Basically the blue note? I understand it’s all in how it’s used. In what context, etc. But the tone it creates would be the blue not, correct?
The Simpsons theme must be in lydian, because the first four notes you picked sounds just like the beginning of it lol. Edit: Isn't E Lydian in sort of the same neighborhood as F# Mixolydian?
Hey! I just made a hand-written chart/cheat sheet when I made the video, but I could whip up a PDF/tab and send it your way if you'd like. I'm also offering pre-made custom lessons, so if you'd rather go that route, we could do that too! : )
