When my hair was half way down my back I did the braided bun but I used spiral bobby pins. Best thing ever! I'd put my hair in a low pony tail then braid it with a small hair tie at the end. Twist the braid into a bun then use one or two pins to secure it. I still use the spiral bobby pins so I dont have to use as many hair ties. My bun stays put all shift.

In the AF you have to use hair ties and bobby pins that are the same color as your hair. In the Army, you can use hair ties that either match or are black (black for darker colors of hair only); your bobby pins need to match your hair color.

I don’t have any military family, but my grandmother on my dad’s side had hair down to her butt, and I’ve only seen it down once or twice. She passed in 2010, and always had a braided bun.❤

Can you do the braided/ twist bun in boot camp or do you have to use the sock bun every day ?

Rylee Laird It doesn’t have to be a sock bun you can style your hair whichever works best for you as long as it is neat and in regulations. I went with the twist bun everyday in Marine Corps boot camp and for my everyday go to hairstyle for work. You’ll be training anyways.

Hi! Love the video! You talk a lot about matching your hair color to the hair ties and pins. But I have naturally red hair so I was just thinking this leaves me out the loop on that rule. Should I just go ahead and use black for everything?

Hi! That’s actually a really good question and concern. It’s really unfortunate that there aren’t accessories that come in shades of red. So I would triple check on this but if you’re actually joining the marine corps I would just say go with the color that is the easiest to blend into the color of your hair. There’s so many different tones of red, so maybe you could get away with the bronzey type of color hair pins and maybe light brown hair ties, but it really just depends on your shade. I would definitely look up the most recent order on marine corps hair regulations! Hope that was somewhat helpful 😊
