Aftershaves have come a long way from those bracing alcohol-laced formulas your dad used as a lad. Whatapos;s the difference between those and the hydrating balms of today? Is it important to put on moisturizer as well as an aftershave? Is aftershave only to be used after a shave? Never fear, all is revealed herein as our resident grooming guru Eric takes down three of the biggest aftershave whoppers.

Speaking of myths, it's a myth that Alcohol is always going to dry your face. There are plenty of aftershaves with alcohol that moisturize really well, and the alcohol and/or witch hazel may sting but it will also keep minor nicks and cuts keep clean and have a mild styptic nature to help stop bleeding. Captain's Choice is a great example of an aftershave that has alcohol but is also very nice to the skin.

I have naturally oily skin, so alcohol is a major plus for me. I actually look to dry up my skin.

Nooo you need to moisturize if you’re oily. Only thing you would need to dry up is sebum and alcohol isn’t gonna do that. See a dermatologist

Never understood the modern metro men that tell you never to use an alcohol splash after shaving cause it dries the skin. How about following up the splash with a balm and/or moisturiser?? A moisturiser alone can't disinfect the skin after a shave.

Don't listen to this guy. Use a real alchohol based aftershave and put moisterizer after if you enjoy not breaking out with irritation and pimples the day after

I agree with the hydration thing. But what about the septic relief that Alcohol does. Ofcourse it dries the skin but can apply after shave balm later for moisturising and hydration

Exactly! It drives me nuts when people like this say you shouldn't use alcohol based aftershave because it'll dry your skin. I use Dominica Bay Rum which has a high alcohol content, but then I follow it up with a moisturizer. If you just dragged a razor over your face, its probably best to put something on it that will sterilize the skin.

Lastly alcohol used in aftershave or colognes is DENATURED ALCOHOL which is not good for skin because it is denatured using harsh chemicals and not edible alcohol. I would reccommend using products with natural grain alochol and grape alcohol. Potassium alum is excellent and its natural

There's nothing "natural" about the industrial process of producing potassium alum or ammonium alum. Whether or not it's a natural crystal or produced synthetically, it's still chemically identical and one should know it contains tons of aluminium ions. I still use it as a deo anyway.

I use mine after I clean my face all the time. It’s the type that gives a cool feeling to your face after applying. I use it mainly because it’s been helping my face from not breaking out

I never, ever, NEVER take shaving advise from a GUY WITH A BEARD! It's like discussing snow-shoes with a guy from Pago Pago [and before you psycho Samoans get your grass skirts in a knot, you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about]. I think we all know what sort of moisturizer this fella' prefers to have on his face.

You missed ossed the biggest myth about aftershave, that it is about fragrace or soothing rather than providing an essential antiseptic to combat infection. That is why the alcohol was there to begin with. One can, of course, switch to a product that contains no alcohol but rather an alternative antiseptic like witchhazel.

The point of aftershave is to be astringent, sterilise, and optionally to numb slightly. You should use moisturiser after as you normally would. I think it's a pretty bad idea to buy aftershave moisturiser combo, and then use it daily. Without shaving: (optional exfoliate) -> cleanser -> (optional astringent) -> moisturiser With shaving: (optional exfoliate) -> cleanser -> shave -> aftershave -> moisturiser

I don't like these balm types of after shaving products. I like the claasic low viscosity, high alcohol ones with aldehydic fragrance, nothing feels better to me and gives me this refreshing kick. I'll stay with "Tabac Original", it gives me all of these and i really love it's smell. Also it is one of the few ones which i consider to be priced fair for it's performance, which is also true for "Old Spice" in my opinion. Once in a while i try out another one just for curiosity, but i always come back to my "Tabac". Today i tried "Hattrick", I wouldn't call it bad, but its scent is too modern and sporty for me, and, compared to "Tabac Original" I find it very shallow/flat and the smell doesn't stay long enough imho.

What your skin really need after shave is closing of pores and anti-septic to not get infected because of blade cuts. If you use balms, you need something else that provides that. This guy is either paid or is extremely misinformed.

+arihantagarwal Everyone has their take on the matter and own viewpoints, but in the logic of my eyes I think rubbing alcohol is underrated. I love it for it's anti-septic properties.

Me too. For people who don't like alcohol there is Witch hazel and any other non-alcoholic face toner. However claiming that pores must remain open is wrong advice IMHO.

If I use a balm, my skin hates it. Defenitely use something like Brut or Aqua Velva. It is an astringent and tightens up the pores!

Myth: alcohol based aftershave will always irritate and dry your skin Not true. If you have a very sensitive skin it will almost always irritate but it won't if you have normal skin and it will act as a decent disinfectant. It also won't necessarily dry your skin if it acts as a moisturizer as well regardless of how many alcohol it has

Balms leave me with irritation while a splash like clubmam pinaud always soothes even the roughest shaves and always always leave my face irritation free. This guy doesnt know what hes talking about

Gentlemen should never wear cologne. It projects too much and interferes with a lady's perfume. A man should never upstage a woman. A long lasting aftershave is all you need. It drys down to a close embrace fragrance and a good one will last about 4-5 hours. Any of the Pinaud Clubman products work this way. Many other good ones to choose from: Floid, Prorasso, Canoe, Tabac, etc.

There's a product here in my country called "Boroline". I'm telling you, after shaving when I apply this, the skin feels like I never actually had any hair in that place LOL, like a baby's butt. Great product! So yeah, it doesn't have to say "Aftershave" to be an after shave.

I used to use aftershave till I quit and realized it does nothing.. It's just a marketing hype.. If not then use baby oil.. It's he best thing for skin.. No these retsrded colognes and weird over priced lotions
