Everything I want you to know about shaving! Why do we need to practice good shaving habits?
Men and women commonly suffer from folliculitis and ingrown hairs from frequent shaving.
We discuss shaving techniques quite a bit in clinic and this video is to help as a foundation for building good shaving habits. I know my technique is not pure and perfect but this video is just a basic guide to help you formulate your own personalized style of shaving!
Men commonly are plagued with razor burn or a medical condition called pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) of the face and neck. PFB can be avoided with decreasing the frequency of shaving and practicing good shaving techniques but there are times when you have to come in to see a dermatologist for treatment with prescription medications or treatments (intralesional steroid injections, laser hair removal).
Here are the basic steps to shaving:
1. Cleanse face with warm water and consider a BHA based cleanser like Neutrogena's salicyclic acid wash amzn.to/2KYPUNI
2. Use a non-irritating shave gel (gels tend to be more lubricating than shave foams). I like Aveeno's Shave Gel amzn.to/2z2Ukka
3. Shave with the grain, and rinse your blade frequently between strokes
4. Follow-up with cold water to rinse off your shave gel and then cleanse with a gentle cleanser; I like to use La Roche Posay's Purifying Foaming Cleanser with ceramides and niacinamide amzn.to/3pqHrW0
5. I do not use "after shave" but instead use a moisturizer like EltaMD's moisturizers which have niacinamide: EltaMD Renewal Complex amzn.to/2Wqnkdk or EltaMD PM amzn.to/2WriJb5
6. Apply SPF...Be your best self for the day while looking your best!

The Moisturizers I Can't Live Without • The Moisturizers I Can...
How to Wear a Mask and Avoid Acne • How To Wear a Mask and...
I like to use a 5 blade razor by Gillette- their ProGlide Fusion amzn.to/3dhgC03.
Of note, my Gillette blades are meant to last for 1 month amzn.to/2KX9QAB. I change my blades out every 3 weeks but this varies on your shaving frequency and the type of disposable blade you are using. Everyone is different and this is not a cookie cutter method to shaving for everyone. Some individuals are unable to tolerate blades and need electric shavers- just ensure these are cleaned out well on a regular basis as bacteria can get easily trapped.

Dull blades really are one of the main culprits for shaving irritation, which is why traditional wet shaving with a double edge razor blade is making a comeback, as not only does the razor only cut the hair at the skin level (and not below, as seen with 3+ blade razors) meaning it doesn't cause ingrown hairs, and due to the low price of the blades (typically $0.05 per blade) you can use a new blade every day while still spending a quarter of what you would spend on Gillette cartridges. hope this helps!

@@matthewzarzour7273 Considering multiblade razor replacements cost $3 each, that would be way too expensive of an option. Luckily a company called Leaf shaves makes a multiblade razor that uses DE blade. Give it a look on youtube.

Good video. Personally I changed from cartridge blades/shavers to a Safety Razor using Double Edge (DE) Blades, specifically Platinum DE Blades which have a softer coating and feel, rather than the legacy Stainless Steel ones along with using quality Shaving Soaps and Creams (Tube) like Proraso. One major thing though was to use cold water for shaving to reduce and prevent shaving rash in which I've been successful at doing most of the time. So initially I use hot-warm water to wet my face, apply Pre-Shave Cream (Proraso or similar), use a Shaving Brush with Shaving Soap or Cream, and lather up in a bowl and apply to my face. I then drain the sink and fill with cold water for the actual shave. Apparently the cold water on the face-blade-to-skin reduces the chance of shaving rash as there's no friction or heat being caused by hot-warm water. I usually do two passes: (1) with the grain (down the face), (2) against the grain (up the face). Then rinse with cold water and apply a quality Post-Shave Balm (Proraso or similar) to 'calm' my skin (no alcohol). Of course it's what works for you. But the 'cold water' technique really worked for me. Kind regards.

Many dermos say to not use any products with propellants or SLS. Also, multi blade razors are designed to tug at the skin to lift and cut the hairs, stay with a single blade.

I used to get extremely bad RB and bumps, I'm extremely fair skinned. I used to use a cartridge razor like in this video. A barber friend of mine recommended a straight razor, at first I thought "not a chance in hell". After dealing with my skin irritation over and over I finally started out on a shavette, and switched my foam over to shaving soap with brush, and instead of a aftershave splash I now use a balm. Here we are, over 20 years later with no irritation, it is a big transition and DE razors do the same I have found but a straight worked for me, everyone's different though, I just wish this video was out back then cause I just happened to have a barber pal lol.

The key takeaway is using a cleanser with ceramides and niacinamide post-shave. I use a very gentle scrub pre-shave, then lather up my cream using a brush and I will use either a safety razor or the Gillette SkinGuard. I shave in 4 passes: With the grain, across the grain, across the grain again (the other way), and then against the grain. By exfoliating and reducing as much stubble as possible, I can shave against the grain for a perfectly smooth finish. Finish up with the aforementioned Cleanser and moisturizer and you're good to go 👍

Great general information............However; multiblade razors are one of the biggest reasons for these problems. For instance a five blade razor head, with each single pass it's the same as five pass's over the same area. You are better off to use a sharp single edge blade, they are so inexpensive you can use a new blade every couple of times.

For a 2 days beard I start with an electric rotating blades razor dry shaving, than move to wet shaving with a shaving cream that I apply lathering with a shaving brush, using a double edge safety razor in 2 passes. After shaving I apply a mosturizer like Eucerin Aquaphor. I really don't love multiple blades cartridge razors.

Best and by far the cheapest hack for me is just simple Vaseline. I wash my face with warm water/dove soap to soften the hair then lather a small amount of Vaseline to the area I am going to shave followed by my shave gel. I shave both with the grain and against the grain for a closer shave, it is a bit messy. However the blade glides perfectly and there isn’t much tug and pull.And when I tell you overtime the Vaseline has worked wonders on not getting so much irritation after. I also slaver it on after shaving and leave it. So basically Vaseline, Vaseline, Vaseline. Such a cheap alternative but very very effective for men with sensitive skin

Shaving with a double-edged razor is far superior to shaving with a cartridge. Period. Many shavers who for years have had irritation, ingrown hairs, razor bumps, etc. have benefitted greatly by making the switch away from cartridge razors. Dragging 5-7 blades across your face versus a single blade is a recipe for trouble. I have personally benefitted from making the switch and encourage others to do the same.

Rinse cartridge razors with cold water only. With the metal razor filaments trapped between their frame, they will expand just enough with warm or hot water to bow and this will cause nicking when shaving with the bowed out filaments.

In my opinion, shaving with a double edged safety razor is better, and shaving with an actual shaving soap would be more beneficial for you. This is what I shave with: - Merkur Razor - Feather razor blades - Shaving brush - Shaving soap: I recommend "Taylor of Old Bond Street" - Proraso pre shave cream - Alum block

Now at the age of 38, the only thing that has changed is Aftershave. My skin for whatever reason can't do splash Aftershaves anymore. Afta Original and Fresh Scent work really great. Price is good at $2 and change, contains Allantoin and other ingredients one can research.

I've been going against the grain on my whole head with a headblade razor, noticed I've been getting a lot of pimple-looking bumps (not sure if it's ingrown hair) but also get a dry, yet oily head throughout the day. I Decided to stop going against the grain, and start using better products but I get lost on what to use. Only recently started using: C3 head wash to clean (feels like it's not cleaning well though) then Marlow shave cream with shea butter to shave my head, then I use headblade clear head as an aftershave, followed by palmer's cocoa butter as a moisturizer (then palmer's once more before bed, after washing again with C3 headwash). Do you think I'm using some wrong products and would you think your routine in this video could work better for my whole head? Also, how do you feel about an exfoliater a couple times a week? THE 10 COMMANDMENTS PREVENTING OF INGROWN HAIRS: 1. THOU SHALT NOT USE DIRTY BLADES! Using a blade that's been used way too many times. Yes, this one may be obvious, but be sure to keep your used tools as clean as possible. Soap and rubbing alcohol will destroy bacteria. 2. HONOR THY DELICATE SKIN! Too many blades! If you are prone to ingrown hairs then you don’t need 3 or more blades. 3. DO NOT TAKE PREP TIME IN VAIN! You should be using a warm/hot water prep (5 mins). Then leave the shaving creme on for more than 3 minutes to really soften the hair. The hair stubble should literally fall away with little or no pressure at all. Pressing hard is the problem! Be gentle ya'll. 4. THOU SHALT NOT GO AGAINST THE GRAIN! Shaving against the grain. Shave in the direction of hair growth (usually down, but perform a face map to be sure). 5. THOU SHALT NOT PRESS! Pressing too hard on the skin with the blade. A gliding, light touch is all you need. This is likely your biggest issue. 6. THOU SHALT NOT PASS! Too many quick passes with the blade. One pass per hairy area - going 1-2 inches downward at a time - will prevent ingrown hairs. Always shave like you might cause damage, not like your mowing the front yard lawn. 7. THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT OVER SHAVING! Shaving too many times. This rule is hard to follow especially if you have to shave for your career but if you are prone to ingrowns, try shaving with an electric clipper. The results are not super close but no one but you will know the difference. Ladies, try waxing. 8. THOU SHALT NOT CLOG! Use of skin/pore clogging cremes or lotions. These keep hairs from growing up. After a shave, keep your skin bare; let the tiny army breath, and allow those newly shaved, really small, microscopic hairs to grow out just in time for the next shave. 9. KEEP THE SKIN FREE! Avoid tight fitting clothing around the Adam’s apple (neck) and/or below the waistline region. 10. REMEMBER TO EXFOLIATE! Not enough exfoliation to remove excess layers of skin. Use a skin care brush for razor bumps as directed. Brushes also tease the hairs away from entering the skin. Try a WIZKER brush today!

I would pretty much follow your word on skin care like it's the gospel at this point. Can you tell me what sunscreen you use so I can buy that as well? Thank you for this video!

Hey just stumbled upon your video I'm very curious I've always had sensitive skin and I started using Cereve products because I found out I have eczema and it acts up when I use scented products. I get I grown hairs and bumps like crazy still and I have just recently switched out and started to use a safety razor... But I still get ingrown hairs and bumps I don't want to stop shaving cause lol I hate hair. But the ingrown hair and bumps are starting to annoy me I'm not sure if I should even bother buying a electric razor like manscape and see if it helps. Basically lol what products would be best for someone with sensitive very sensitive skin lol.

Hello doctor, can this same method be used for the pubic area. I'm a black woman with horrible ingrown hair issue. I was considering laser hair removal, but it's hard to find clinic that treat black skin. Your advice will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Dr. Sugai, thank you for the informational video! I did not realize that it was necessary to cleanse the face again after shaving. I do not typically use exfoliating cleansers, as they irritate my skin. I prefer leave-on products. I do, however, use a gentle cleanser like the one you mentioned here. How would you incorporate leave-on exfoliating products into this routine? For example, CeraVe SA cream, Paula’s Choice Liquid BHA, or The Inkey List PHA toner. Could this be applied after shaving if the BHA cleanser was not used beforehand? Would it be necessary to use the gentle cleanser before and after shaving? Please enlighten me.

Hi Matthew- thanks for watching and great question. It would be fine to apply the leave on product after shaving. Then okay to moisturize and sunscreen afterwards. If you have a problem with razor burn I think cleansing after the shave is necessary too. If not, cold water alone to rinse your shave gel off is fine. I also developed a hack of shaving with a foaming cleanser and that serves as a cleanse before and after. I can make a video on this later. Take care! 🙏🏼🤙

I noticed, you used a cartridge razor, is that your preference and why? Have you used a double edge safety razor?

Phenomenal products. Ever since switching from shaving cream to the aveeno gel it’s been amazing. What’s a cheaper option on the last product?

I started shaving with just one pass to reduce razor irritation and for the last 40 years I still do one pass, with the very odd exception, even when I was working where I needed to be smart. Nobody ever made a comment about not having a BBS shave. However, my skin problem is I am sensitive to perfumes and other chemicals. Can you recommend a sensitive shaving cream that would help. Must admit I often just apply Nivea sensitive foam (Horror! I know for some), but it is very good, but I like the idea of using a brush and working up a lather.

Hello, with my job I sweat alot, what would you recommend to use for a aftershave? Im cleansing, then using a ginseng shave oil with a striaght razer. Salicylic acid, then a retinol moisturiser. Works OK on days off but becomes sore when sweaty @ work. Any tips be greatly appreciated

What about a safety razor? I've been researching wet shaving cause of cost and in my experience the pro glide cartridges have gotten worse and worse.. Everything I've looked up says that using a DE razor (double edge) gives you a mutch closer and cleaner shave with much less chance of irritation or ingrown hair's. Have you any experience with using a straight razor or safety razor?

@danielsugaimd
@danielsugaimd 3 года назад
Hi! Great question. Same products. Electric shaving tends to be gentler and with a less close shave but the routine would be the same. Just be sure to clean the shaver routinely so that bacteria doesn’t build up. Thanks for watching! 🙏🏼🤙

I really got tired of shaving cream and gel because I had to keep adding more after applying more water to keep my face lubricated. With shaving butter I don't need to do that. I can go over an area multiple times and it stays lubricated. Especially when adding a little bit of water. There's no need to keep applying more.

Hi Daniel! Thank you for your advice - I’m going to buy the La Roche-Posay cleanser as my second cleanser! I have a question about the razor bumps I get on my chin though, haha - do you have thoughts on how to prevent them specifically? Is witch hazel a bad idea? haha. Thanks! : )
@danielsugaimd
@danielsugaimd 3 года назад
Niall hello, friend- thank you for watching! There are so many products with witch hazel which has been around for centuries offering many benefits. That being said though, we never recommended this during my derm training in residency and we only recommend the tried and true ingredients for razor bumps like benzoyl peroxide or salicyclic acid. Beyond that, we recommend you seeing a derm to go over prescription options. I have been sent a few products with witch hazel from other companies and will circle back and let you all know what I think. May make a good video 😉🤙👍. Take care!

Doctor what if you use serums like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide by the ordinary. Also, isn’t that cleaner for oily skin? What if you have sensitive/dry?

Hey Doc, just wondering what are your thoughts on aftershave like say Nivea post balm shave ? Also what about putting Dickinson’s witch hazel on afterwards ?
@danielsugaimd
@danielsugaimd 3 года назад
J U hello, my friend- I actually don’t routinely recommend after shave or balms. A lot of them can be irritating and I prefer a gentle moisturizer without fragrance. If your skin can handle nivea without issues- that is fine to stick with it it you like how it makes your skin feel after a shave. Witch hazel has a lot of “theoretical” benefits but I don’t routine recommend this either. As an astringent, I have seen it over-dry skin and cause rashes. But, if you find it soothing after a shave- I am not opposed to it! Take care and thanks for watching! 🤙🙏🏼🤙🤙
