Three on Three has returned. In our first head-to-head-to-head comparison, we took a look at three of what we deemed to be the very finest in-house, manually wound dress watches on the planet. Today we move into a broader category, but one that is very dear to our collective heart here at HODINKEE - independent watchmaking. For the full story, go to: www.hodinkee.com/features/thre...

At 3:32, you can see a piece that got dislodged form the rotor on the moon logo of the Sarpaneva. That's a little sad. Quality issues?

Beautiful watches. I saw where you stated they also come in 42mm. Is the Speake-Marin 42mm watch variant also under $15,000? For me I loved the Habring.

What does "modular construction" entail exactly?
@daradidam
@daradidam 9 лет назад
It means that the watch movement is built on several modules, with each modules performing specific complication/function and can be arranged in a number of ways or be taken off/added to another watch model. This configuration results in a thicker watch compared with traditional watch movements that integrates different functions into a single unit.

Damn, thought the case shape of Ming watches were completely original but I see now that they have taken a lot of inspiration from the Sarpaneva. Thought the watch in the thumbnail was a Ming, although Ming didn’t even exist when the video was released…

Aside from the Habring, the watches are stupidly overpriced. you can source a soprod A10 for 200 euros and watches with the movement generally cost 500 - 1500 euros, decoration and custom rotor doesn't justify the mark up. The Speak-Marin has very simple modifications - turning a date wheel into a pointer isn't rocket science -> Oris does it for 1000 euro watches.
@tendrams

+JimIBobIJones If a company is going to produce a jumping seconds movement, it is probably best to make sure it hits the markers! :(
@anttitapio4145
@anttitapio4145 7 лет назад
jep, that caught my attention too. Probably it can be fixexd if it ain´t spacing between the markers...or hopefully it is just the angle of filming that tricks the eye.
@burritomaker69

As an engineer I can see you do not clear understand the cost of finishing.........watch finishes are some of the highest in existence in any industry and let’s say we arbitrarily go from a finish level of 1 to level 2. The cost to go to level 2 is exponentially greater......if the finish is done by hand it’s much much much greater. So sure paper can be bought for less than a dollar but to turn it into a painting takes a lot of time and skill and that’s what you’re paying for......not some slapped on thoughtless feature that suddenly justifies the exorbitant cost.

Am I the only one thinking jumping second watch which is not a quartz is cool but kind of defeats the purpose of having a mechanical watch?

I don't understand the allure of a deadbeat second hand in a mechanical movement watch. It smacks of quartz. If I want a deadbeat second hand that hits each mark with precision, I'd buy a Grand Seiko quartz with their incredible 9 F movement, the finest quartz movement available. I can get one discounted for under two grand. The case finishing is in another league from the watch you showed.
@valebliz
@valebliz 7 лет назад
Back when quartz didn't existed, a deadbeat watch was something very fashinating
@Modest_Proposal
@Modest_Proposal 6 лет назад
Dead beat seconds were around before quartz watches. Then quartzes came around and emulated them. And if you're superficial enough to avoid a watch because it might be mistaken for a quartz, you are playing the game for the wrong reasons. And you are not the intended audience.
@pekingpsyduck3431
@pekingpsyduck3431 6 лет назад
Honestly, it boggles the mind how someone could understand the allure of a mechanical watch but not the allure of dead seconds...
@andyreiter6253
@andyreiter6253 6 лет назад
To answer your question - you see the watch has 60 little marks that allow you to see to one second of the present time, the deadbeat if you look closely is always aligned with the seconds marks. It is a feature that underlined the complexity of he movement ... part of the refinement. No complications are usually useful as we have our smartphones around that tel u the date the month and have alarms and chrono features ... but it’s just the idea that makes a watch worthy of your money ... for some it may be the moon phase for the others it’s the tourbillion ... others love their split seconds chrono which most probably they will never use. Deadbeat is not for everybody ... it’s more for the people that value those little things more than the brands name or the esthetics ... because that’s where they want their money to put. Hope I helped to answer you question

In regard to the Habring 2. "This hits every single time." Look at 2:13 it's out on the 24, 25, 26, and 27.
@morbideddie
@morbideddie 9 лет назад
The camera is clearly positioned at a slight angle and is non centered, so of course the seconds will not line up across the whole dial. Notice how the second hand hits closer to the mark near the 30 second position, that's because the of the perspective.
@floppycoin_
@floppycoin_ 9 лет назад
I concur with the other reply to your comment, it is the angle at which the camera is at.
@Preset1
@Preset1 9 лет назад
morbideddie Floppycoin You mean the angle where it's dead on with the camera? Or do you mean that by your logic the 30~ second marker must be out at another angle whereby the 24-27 will be dead on the mark? Trust me, it's off the mark and it will be off the mark in 'all viewing angles' simply because there is slack in the train.

Exotic Farmer the hand doesn't even line up with the markers. That doesn't add value, it takes it away in my view.
@Matfridt
@Matfridt 7 лет назад
Will Smith Yes, it most certainly does, if not they would've commented on it asap, as a huge drawback. If you're implying that you're better off with a quartz, know this; You do not buy these watches because you need to keep track of time, you buy them for great craftsmanship and unique looks. Ofc, not everyone agrees that this is important at all, but that's how it is for a lot of people.
@willsmith1170
@willsmith1170 7 лет назад
Exotic Farmer You do not need to explain quartz vs. mechanical to me. I'm a vintage collector myself. I meant that they shouldn't of "half assed" the dead second complication. It needs to line up with the markers or not have it at all. Forgive me if I hadn't expressed myself well in my previous comment.
