Three reasons not to buy the KTM 390 Duke. First- The KTM 390 Duke is a seriously quick bike and demands commitment from its rider. It needs you to be attentive at all times because the turn of speed is surprisingly quick and you could get into trouble if you are not aware about what you are doing. It still feels small and light to ride which is why it's too easy to get in over your head with this machine. Second- If you are stepping up from a small commuter bike, the 390 Duke will feel quite a handful. You could look at buying the KTM 250 Duke instead, which has a far less manic engine while essentially being the same bike as the 390 Duke but without the TFT display, adjustable suspension and the Metzeler tyres. Third- KTM designs are loud, in your face and the same can be said about the colours on offer. It is aggressive and may not be to everyone's tastes or preferences. Take a test ride to find out if the nature of this bike appeals to you.

Yea this indian reviewers are ignorant, ppl in usa has already said the 390, ninja 400 or cf moto 450 are the best begainer bikes to start.. The 200 ktm bikes are nothing but complete waste of money

As someone who just bought one I would like to add one thing For those saying it's too aggressive for newer riders, do this: For the first 1000-2000 kms ride it only in rain mode This will reduce power and throttle input will be much more calm Will help get adjusted to it a bit better (this is my first bike and it's surprisingly good and great control for a responsible beginner rider

You really don't need to unless you are a brand new rider who is nervous on a bike. For me my 450 dirt bike with 50hp feels slow.

@@sullythepankake9663 that's right, I mentioned this mainly for those who may get intimidated with this power, I have seen my own friends who use 200cc bikes find this intimidating, and consider I was a new rider on such a first bike, this really helped, I used this for around 500kms to get used to the feel, it's quite effective at taming this beast

@@metaversewr8827 good to hear it! Would this be a good first bike purchase? Have ridden TVS wego for 8 years and tvs apache 160 4v for a month now. Looking to buy a good first bike which would be vfm. Recently i test rode the 390 adventure and boy i was thrilled and overjoyed throughout the entire ride. I felt the 44 bhp is greatly over emphasised , i had no problem managing the bike.....could be that i did not yet reach the full horsepowers on that bike. I also test rode the duke 250 and did not feel the same excitement. Would really appreciate some valuable insights from you

I have been riding a 15 bhp motorcycle for the last nine years. I recently test rode this 390 and not sure why I didn't feel the same adrenaline rush as before. It could be that I was mentally prepared for this intensity, unlike the last time when my heart almost reached my throat. Alternatively, perhaps I have been revving my 15 bhp motor like a rogue lately

Same feeling for me as well. Been riding Honda unicorn for the last 10 years recently bought gen 3 Duke 390. Yes it's fast but not that much intimidating. Used to ride my unicorn on the edge occasionally and for me the 390 doesn't feel like it's not beginner friendly

Yup all of reasons to buy the duke. I went from a super splendor to duke and it was great. I had driven other bikes but duke is the one that felt like an upgrade

I started my riding journey on an r15. Rode it for a month and bought my first motorcycle, KTM Duke 390. It’s intimidating at first but you’ll get used to the traffic issues it has. Basically if you have only one motorcycle, it doesn’t matter which one it is, you’ll love it. Also the duke rips, hard. I live in the northeast region of India where roads are really small, so it’s like a super bike out here. You can’t rip a zx10r and I’m sure anyone riding that can’t just cross me like how it should be, hahaha duke rocks!!!!

Just to add here that if you do upgrade from a commuter that is 11 to 15 bhp, it is suggested to take things slow and raise the bar slowly on the public roads as it WILL surprise you. Speaking with experience of being an owner of RTR 160 who is friends with 390 owners.

I recommend using it in rain mode, it reduces throttle input and power making it more tame, especially for a beginner

American roads are good enough for litre class bikes. Anything which cannot cruise at 90-100 miles per hour will feel slow on the highway.

less density and less mountains and more plains so long wide straight roads in contrast in europe a 400cc is fine enough cause higher density and more mountains and twisties thats why europeans and americans dont agree on defination of beginner bike ,in india you cant use half its potential cause density , traffic , road condition and shit

It is a beginner's motorcycle, compared to BMW 1000rr , Yamaha R1 and so on. They have roads where they can cruise 70mph continuously. We have very limitations. For us, where the market is dominated by 100, 160cc bikes, 390 is big motorcycle.

It vibrates a lot.. Took 2 test rides, both vibrated like hell.. A lot more than my older RR310.. Removed it from my list..

There will be a break-in period of 1000km where you have to ride it slow, right? I think that's enough time to adapt to the power I think it's not necessarily bad *if* and only *if* the rider is a responsible driver

@@sanketkakde7919 most of the power lies above 6000rpm right? So you would have to rev it out to get that 45hp. The way I see it, a young and rash rider would be eager and irresponsible; they would simply wack the throttle open, which is why they get scared. A more responsible rider would probably ease into it.

I cannot comment on the Gen 3 but the Gen 2 390 Duke is very beginner friendly. In fact, it lost a lot of the manic character of Gen 1. So, the Gen 2 will be really easy to adapt to. I don't know how much punchier the Gen 3 is. Need to test ride one.

I agree with all that he says, but in my opinion 99.99% of the times the deciding factor is MONEY. If one has it, he will go for it. If one has TONS of it, he will go for even BIGGER BIKES like BMW, Ducati etc...

Bad build quality are you blind or what KTM is the only brand that's giving good build quality for the money they provide I own a 250 I have mostly used it rainy weathers for nearly 2 years and still no sign of rust and no panel sounds but on the other side my friend bought a MT15 v2 in 2 months he started facing rust issue and it cost 2L for what it's not even worth😂

I feel you do hype dukes. Single cylinder 400cc can be surely handled at ease if you have been riding anything near 150cc for 4-6 years. Adrenaline kicks in if you rev it for sure, but it is not a dealbreaker. As dukes are massively slow below 4k rpm(in terms of torque kicking in), balancing is a task, but again, not problematic.

@@motorinc I agree. 400s are to be handled responsibly, or precisely- bikes above 35ish bhp and 35ish Nm are to be handled responsibly, they are prone to overwhelm the rider.

Switch to duke 390 for its light weight and office commute from a GT 650, but the torque and pull the GT gives is just awesome something u cannot compare with duke

I own gen 2 Duke 390. I don't like it's low end power. It's very difficult to ride in city which happens 100% for me for all the time. I am looking for something which is refined and pulls at low end. I was thinking of switching to new Royal Enfield Classic 350. Will the Gen 3 Duke 390 cater my needs? It's increased displacement makes it refined than before? Is the low end ridable?

Owner of gen3 390,I too have to ride my bike in city most of the time and out of which 30-40% is bumper to bumper traffic,from the previous gen yes it has a better low end torque but only AS COMPARED TO PREVIOUS GEN,overall it still feels sluggish in traffic but it tackles 2nd-3rd gear 25-30 pretty well.

With the gen3 they've revived the old bs3 character, it's no more practical biased like the gen2 plus offers top of the chart electronics.Its like you have a bs3 390 that you can set to your limits using the electronics like if you switch the MTC off it's all upto your balls,I guess you're getting what I'm trying to say.

Unlikely, Charles. It looks like a longer unit as well as a fatter one.

But you should be able to fit the Gen 2 rear shock in a Gen 1 390. It has much better damping. Or if you have the cash, you can approach Zedling for a custom solution.
