Thanks for providing the best explanation of how this is performed.

I agree. Exposing how Magic is done serves no purpose. Libraries are a good place to research magic effects for a serious student without exposing them on a wide scale like youtube does. I am also a working performer. Have respect for magic. Harry Blackstone JR once said, respect and be good to Magic and it will be good to you. I never expose anything that I do.

You don't need a lot of money to learn magic. You buy a book, a few simple props, learn the principles. Work on your performance skills and presto.... you're on your way! Children should not be pushed into learning anything. In magic's case you fall into it, the bug bites and you go from there. In my case I saw a guy do a rope trick, was amazed and said I want to learn magic! I bought books, tricks, went to lectures, worked very hard on my skills and magic history, joined a society.

I don't agree magic is a dying art. There are many magic societies in my country and many in America and around the world. Magicians have always invented new tricks. I agree magic has been harmed but it has been harmed by people exposing tricks and devaluing it in the eyes of the audience and potential audience. I am a working performer and I see how magic now causes comments like, "Oh I Know how this is done, I saw it on You Tube," before we even do anything.

All of which supports magic and ensures its safe passage to the next generation. In your case, I hope not exposing on a worldwide forum, show tricks but also teach their history, urge your kids to buy books etc, go to shows, learn as much about the history of this wonderful art and tell them to respect the people who made it available in the first place.

Happy that you respect my point of view but why should their be a limit? Because you say so? Are you a magician? Are you a member of a magic society? Have you invested time and money in magic? Do you manufacture props? Does your livelihood depend on magic? I suspect not, but do correct me if I'm wrong. Become a magician, see its camaraderie, see how we work. We respect each other and each other's rights and ask permission to use what they own or have originated See how you feel then.

Your other handle on RU-vid is "MagicForJesus" , right ? So do you think Jesus would endorse the rule "Thou Shalt Not Steal" ? And this is not your trick ,right ? You did not create it. So it's not yours to expose . Create your own magic and then expose it if you want (but why ? Why destroy the magic by exposing it ? Oh, well, that's another topic ...) But since you didn't originate this it's not yours to steal and ruin by exposing it.
@bigmagic96
@bigmagic96 11 лет назад
Understand that you get to feel good about teaching simple tricks but let's stick to the points raised. You teach locally, this person exposes on a worldwide forum. I teach with the backing of a magic society and we only charge a nominal fee to join which helps to keep our society solvent. I don't gain financially. Our policy is to admit those who have demonstrated a strong continued interest by showing they have bought DVDs, tricks, books etc and helped the art and are not just merely curious.
@bigmagic96
@bigmagic96 11 лет назад
If you knew how magic works in your country you would see magic societies and clubs have junior sections. People like me, members of societies, teach children while instilling in them respect for the proprietory rights of the originator and anyone who has invested in the trick or equipment and has the rights to them. These rights are protected by law and anyone who contravenes them risks legal action against them. Magic will survive if people respect it, exposing it is not respecting it.

I see what you say, and greatly respect your viewpoint. I think you're right. But I would like to suggest that there is a subtle difference between simply exposing a trick (which is not respecting magic) and teaching magic. This man's intention is not to ruin the trick. This man's intention is to spread the trick around, and invite people to participate in the wonderful thing that is magic. I think this man is doing more good for magic than harm.

No, it's not my effect. Yes, I know how to do it. I learned it because I was 'bitten by the magic bug' many years ago. Because of that I sought out and bought magic books, went to lectures and conventions, bought props and studied the subject and its history very diligently and still do. Agreed, it is informative. I guess someone who isn't interested in magic could have got here because You Tube videos have a way of seamlessly leading you from one subject to another.

Magicians have always shared magic secrets. The problem is that putting on youtube makes it too easy to get the solution. A magician performs the trick and a few seconds later a teenager googles this video which gives the basic idea in a matter of seconds. This spoils the fun. When the solution is in a book almost the only people who take the time to look it up are people who have a real interest beyond the moment. Yes, you are not the only one with a tutorial on this but you can help by taking yours down.

Teach this to your children and they will have a lot more fun, make lifelong friends, value everything more and won't run the risk of getting sued by somebody who has put in many years of work and dedication but who has, or stands to lose a fortune because their dreams have been shattered by thoughtless exposure of something they own. After all said and done and all arguments made, to respect each other is basic common decency. Exposing magic on the net is wrong, pain and simple.
@SuperMagicRay
@SuperMagicRay 12 лет назад
Is there any particular reason that you expose secrets to these effects? Even though this trick is very old the basics are seen in many of the newer rope routines. Furthermore this is still being sold as a marketed effect. If people really would like to know this secret it only cost $4. What is the difference if it is this effect or another that your exposing? For Example..A dove production. Magicians spend not only the money but also the time to master it. Please respect others. Thanks.

You say it's brotherly to give freely... maybe so but if you don't have the right to give you aren't being brotherly to those who do. See how many people are exposing tricks on the net. How many give credit to the originators? How is that 'brotherly?' How many dreams could be shattered someone develops an effect, pays all the costs and then sees it exposed on the net the day after it hits the stores. The answer is simple.. don't expose what you don't own.

Manly P. Hall, “The secret teachings of all ages”: - “By means of the secret processes of ceremonial magic it is possible to contact these invisible creatures and gain their help in some human undertaking...It is possible to make contracts with spirits whereby the magician becomes for a stipulated time the master of an elemental being...True black magic is performed with the aid of a demoniacal spirit who serves the sorcerer for the length of his earthly life, with the understanding that after death the magician shall become the servant of his own demon. For this reason, a black magician will go to inconceivable ends to prolong his physical life, since there is nothing for him beyond the grave.” - “While the black magician at the time of signing his pact with the elemental demon maybe fully convinced that he is strong enough to control indefinitely the powers placed at his disposal, he is speedily undeceived. Before many years elapse he must turn all his energies to the problem of self-preservation. A world of horrors to which he has attuned himself by his own covetousness looms nearer every day, until he exists upon the edge of a seething mealstrom, expecting momentarily to be sucked down into its turbid depths. Afraid to die - because he will become the servant of his own demon - the magician commits crime after crime to prolong his wretched earthly existence.”

I confess I am not a member of a magic society, nor do I manufacture props for a living. But I am and always will be a magician, and I have put more than time and money into my art. I am only young, but magic is a great part of who I am. My family never had much money. But I taught myself much of what I know, because I love magic. Do you really think that magic should only be available to those who have money? I had no way to afford lessons as a child. Should I then have given up on my dreams?

I know of the magician's camaraderie. but tell me, which is more brotherly? sharing what you love, or charging for it? I agree that magicians need to make a living and hence they need to get paid for their tricks. But for a trick like this, a widespread, standard trick, I believe sharing it is appropriate.

This is misleading or at best wishful thinking: "by teaching these tricks it will inspire magicians to invent new ones" . Not true. This sort of exposing is destroying perfectly good magic. And this can hardly be called "teaching" , this guy is exposing , nothing more. His own performance is barely competent and adds nothing new to this effect. This is not someone who has reached a level where he has any business "teaching" anyone else how to perform.

I haven't seen any magic clubs or societies in sydney, although my grandfather was in one. I think these clubs are good, but are not spreading magic far enough. children need a push to start learning these things from a club and maybe videos like this would do that. Ths trick is so old now and so widespread that rights over it have been broken long ago. It's like trying to take legal action over having invented the french drop or cheese. Please understand. I hold for you the utmost respect.

You know what's worse? Magic is dying. It's important that we pass on this beautiful art to the magicians of tomorrow. how will children learn, and magic survive any other way? But look at it this way, revealing this trick means that magicians need to keep inventing new ones! Please, PLEASE Check out Dan Harlan's "Awakening". It's this trick, only much more incredible, and explains my point fairly well.

Performance magic is about mystery. It is about sharing an impossible moment with people that takes them out of the everyday world for a time. It is the play of imagination. And when done well, it can be a powerful emotional experience as well. You Tube exposure is NOT about teaching magic. Let's not fool ourselves. Its only purpose is to draw sad attention to the RU-vidr. In this case Mr. Quintlox. How would you enjoy someone sitting behind you at the movies loudly explaining how all the special effects are done? You would want to punch him in the throat for drawing attention to himself and continually taking you out of the movie. Anyone with an ounce of respect for the art would certainly and happily provide guidance to someone with a genuine interest and point him or her in the right direction. And if one cares about and respects magic, one would never, ever consider exposing it on You Tube. No matter how simple the effect. It is about respect for the art. Period.
@bigmagic96
@bigmagic96 12 лет назад
To expose how a trick is done is like telling the punchline of a joke first. You spoil it!! This is not your trick so you have no right to expose it, or magic in general. What you are doing is spoiling the wonder for audiences and damaging the image of magic by distracting the audience into thinking, 'Oh I know how this is done,' and leading them away from enjoying the effect. Bad day's work pal, bad day's work!!

I disagree. I think his performance may not be amazing, but that's because it's not a performance. it's step by step instruction on the mechanics of a great trick. by the way, my statement IS true. look up Dan Harlan's awakening for a very specific example.

I'm very sorry. I know how it feels. I teach children magic. Not my biggest secrets, but simple tricks. It brings them so much joy to be able to show their friends and families what they can do. These kids have learned some simple card and coin tricks from me, and sometimes things more like this. I teach them for free. I don't ask for payment for my services, or for telling them the secrets of any tricks I've created myself. It is my gift to the kids, and to magic. what do you think of this?

Magic is a dying art, which is unfortunate. But how will the next generation learn the joys of magic without being taught? Teaching these tricks also inspires magicians to invent new ones. The professor's nightmare, or three rope trick, is such an old trick now, and so widely performed, that revealing the secrets here has little impact. The creator is long gone. No, Jesus would not endorse stealing, but he isn't stealing. He knows the secret already. He is simply sharing it.
