What is your physical health like now? I hear so many stories of guys who were in special forces and now are ruined physically.

@@jonklein7130 sorry it took me so long to get back to you, I just saw your reply. I have to correct your last statement I was not Special Forces. I was a Ranger. That being said I suffer from a TBI and a number of other ailments but all considered, I am in great shape. I stay very active in the gym, I run no more than 3 miles, 3 times a week. I continue practicing MMA and stay proficient at the range. And of course I eat well. I take my meds from the VA high blood pressure and something else for nightmares. I was 173rd, VN, and that was not a good time for any combat arms decisions. Had I remained single I think that I might have gone Ranger, but knew too little. An SF NCO tried to recruit me on my way out of VN, but it was a suicidal choice from what I'd seen.

Some of the best PT I have ever had was in a leg unit in Korea…..the bugles! The hill runs! I firmly believe my year in Korea toughened me up for RIP. My 1st contract was only 2 years and MEPS didn’t have any Ranger contracts left. So, my recruiter advised that I take a 11X with Korea in a two year contract. Best thing I ever did. After my 1 year window opened, I re-enlisted with Airborne and RIP in my contract. I was an E-3 with a shitload of field experience and was a PT stud. By the time I got to Airborne School, I was outperforming the Marines there and was honor grad) then RIP, I firmly believed that year in Korea made all of the difference. Camp Casey made Cole Range easier in me than the lot coming from AIT and Airborne School.

You can get slots for really about anything; I've known dudes who've gotten their Dive Bubble, been to Sniper School, etc. Freefall is really hard to come by unless you're in RRC.

A former Ranger Capt I worked in was a certified Combatant Diver. He went through the same Combatant Dive School as Special Forces.

If you LEARN the Ranger Standard (and apply it) and if you DON'T talk up the 82nd, you will do fine. But if you pop off with a "We did it this way at the 82nd" or you wear that AA stuff - you will get a ration of shit. I mean no disrespect to you when I say this ... The 82nd is a shit unit. The Rangers actually do so well because they do things their way. They want your expertise and your knowledge but they want it applied to THEIR way of doing things and inside their culture.

You'll learn your actual job in AIT, and then when you show up your first line/team leader will teach you the specifics of how they want you to do it at Regiment. You don't have to be an expert, just have basic competency and be ready and willing to learn.

I don't have family time myself within Regiment, but had soldiers under me who were married. You do and you don't have family time. I know, kind of vague. The training cycle/readiness cycle is it's own animal with no regards to outside influences like holidays that the rest of the Army gets to enjoy. There will be some Christmases and other holidays where you will be deployed or other wise unable to travel with family. The training cycle is also very intensive, with odd hours and working through weekends. That being said, the Battalions do a good job of compensating you for your time with three and four day weekends after particularly intensive training events. I'd estimate at least once a month. Additionally, you are guaranteed two 16-18 day periods of leave every year, where Regiment will do their best to time around holidays. Unfortunately, you aren't allowed to pick and choose the time you take leave outside of legitimate family emergencies. Yet we never left the compound, I hear they make you guys live with the rest of the Army now and don't allow compound exclusive life? They also changed the name of [RIP]...Ranger Indoctrination Program, to [RASP] Ranger Assessment & Selection Program because of political pressure. I guess Ranger "Indoctrination" Program sounded to much like they were using mind control creating programmed killing machines. 😆

Exactly. Gotta make it through RASP first. But it isn't bad to have those long term goals; just don't let them overwhelm you. The time it will take to get there is going to pass one way or another.

@@zachthedangerranger anything you struggled with particularly? I can do all the PT requirements with ease. I've trained with AFSPECWAR when I was looking at going Weatherman so my body is 100% ready to go. And is there anything you would recommend to help me get through rasp in terms of my mental state of readiness ?

@@1ice3690 the biggest motivation for me was that I did not want to go to a regular airborne or infantry unit. Trust me, you do not want to end up there. The one thing I struggled with physically was honestly the 8 foot wall in the RPAT; for whatever reason that thing kicked my ass until I went and practiced my technique

Yeah there are definitely pools available for use on post, might even be able to do it for morning PT. No one is seeing combat right now.

If you want to see "combat," you have the wrong idea. Read.

It's hard to say; all the E5's in my RASP class were tabbed. I would recommend trying to get your tab prior to RASP, however, a lot of units are loathe to let fresh tabs immediately go to RASP and you run the risk of getting promoted to E6 and thereby having to attend RASP 2

@@zachthedangerranger thank you for the advice. I'll certainly aim for my tab first then, and delay my E-6 as long as possible to try to get to RASP as a E-5. 90% if my regrets from leaving the Army the first time was not accomplishing my goals, so this time I'm going for broke.

I'll be honest, that is way beyond my area of knowledge. I would definitely find a 75th Recruiter and talk to them about it; BN surgeon slots are very few and hard to get from what I do know

Yes absolutely. Market yourself as the designated driver and you'll be fine.

Depends on where they're at in their career. Can get sniper, RSLC, Dive, AT Driver, SERE. A few smaller ones.

If you're an E5 or above, yes. If you're E4 or below, no it's really not necessary

That's a curious comment. Tillman was KIA, and possibly by friendly fire. His mother and wife wrote a book about him. He gave up a professional football contract to join the army after 9/11; I would expect that he excelled as a Ranger. He was also an intellectual, which would probably qualify him as a "modern Renaissance Man."

I worked with a Army Capt who was in Ranger Regiment. He said it's much harder getting selected as a non combat arms MOS.

Read. Train. Stay away from games, gossip, and wasting time. Read when you can read. You need to train your mind if you really want to do it. Read whenever possible. If you're bored reading, find something to read that you want to read because reading widely also trains your mind; then reading training material becomes easier; use pencils and pens to underline keywords and sentences, write in the margins so that you can briefly page through your reading and reinforce your memory by reading margin comments and your underlining. It's good training for your reading and thinking for life in general

@@AFGixxeR88 Generally once you get to your battalion the only regular PT tests you take are for events like EIB or regular army schools. All the other ones such as pre-ranger school PT Tests and annual standards week tests are 5 miles, to be conducted in 40 minutes or less which works out to be 8 min miles. Being able to run a sub 13 2 miler is definitely good and something that most guys can do, it just isn't graded as often.

It's quite common in the military. Drinking is encouraged. I personally seen alcohol related issues in the Army and Marines.

It's cultural for one, and it quickly becomes a habit. FYI, the women's movement in the US began as a result of alcoholism; miners drank their pay on Friday nights as they walked home from the mines. It goes way back. It is best not to drink at all because too many of us make a habit out of it, and soon it's an addiction. I know. It's better to read and write about life, philosophy, and such, or at least have a hobby like music instruments, or anything else. Cheers!

If I was in ranger regiment I wouldn't want to do anything outside of work that would either hurt or not benefit my squad. Alcohol is one of those things. I never thought ranger regiment had a drinking issue before seeing this video. I thought they held themselves to a much higher standard

We are on the same page; I don't understand what's happening today. My first fire team leader was KIA a few feet from me in a place called "Hobo Woods." He was black as were other soldiers in my squad, 1st bat, 503ed, 173rd. Now today I'm watching veterans trying to kill our democracy. I makes no sense; I watch the D-Day invasion movies and videos, Iwo Jima and the rest, and wonder what the hell are people thinking that they're pissing away?

There was a 41 yr old Soldier who made it through RASP. He became a SFC and Communications Chief in one the Ranger Battalions.

There's a lot going on in married life, and add that to married life in the army and you have a lot going on for you and your family. I figure that you want income security with benefits; the army makes sense for you as any branch. But, life in the military means many months apart from the family, suspicion, and the rest. Sure join and do something that you feel confident about achieving. Do that first before hooking up with a demanding life beyond necessary. Non-combat arms, non-combat jobs, work too. If you're serious about the army, learn this frontwards and backward before leaving. @@zachthedangerranger Good advice; his family may be the reason he wants to join. I had a company commander who disliked the army; he was a leg captain in communications. He was a great guy. He wanted out of the army but had to stay because he had two kids, a boy, and a girl, and both were born blind. By remaining in they had full access to medical at Walter Reed. I ETS days before he was to leave for a tour in VN, 1968. Yes, the army has some security for families, and it's best to succeed at something for them, but striving for the regiment while carrying the new family burden does not sound wise. You are doing good counseling here, by the way.
