I bought one just like this at our Habitat store over a year ago. I just started painting it, but then got a 12 drawer dresser, nightstand and mirror to finish for a customer. I love how this project turned out! I really appreciate it when people aren't afraid to move items like this into the 21st century. I think it's better to redo and get more use out of something like this than let it sit and gather dust in a restore. Well done!

Personally, I think your redo is beautiful. The dark heavy wood before reminds me of the stuffy living rooms of some of my family members - you know, the living rooms that no one really “lives” in. I know some folks think painting wood is sacrilege, my late father felt that way - But, I say let a piece of furniture work for YOUR taste and don’t preserve it out of obligation to the past.

I get it - you did your thing to your furniture. However, to find a secretary with a serpentine front, the lovely inlay on the glass doors and the amazing curved top - you striped out all the best bits.One piece with these three details is a real find - even if a reproduction. IMO - It would have been better to paint it, put beveled mirror on the inside and lucite pulls on the drawers.

I love what you have done with this piece of furniture. I notice from some comments that some people do not appreciate these makeovers of wooden furniture. Whilst this piece originally would have fitted in nicely into some stuffy old big woldpannelled room (which I always found very depressing), I would not have welcomed it into my home. I disagree that it looks like something from Ikea, to me, it is still an individual piece that changed with the times, and would look lovely in any light modern home. I am new to this channel, and feel very inspired.

I love this! I have had the honor of carting my mother's hutch for years. I was glad to have the legacy left to me....but it was never my taste. I am about to paint it....generations to come may strip it and stain it back. But I won't be there to see. It is your home, you get to decorate it any way you want. I think you did a great job.❤

The reason for the primer bleed through is you were going over original shellac finish. Glad you're happy with the results. As an antique restorer it just makes me sad.

I have 2 of them and want to make them unique as they no longer suit my decor. There are so many of these desks in thrift stores etc and no one wants them. . it’s so sad. I am glad you rescued one and gave it a home and finished into a beautiful piece. Very inspiring!
