The quality drop and price rise is soooo real in Europe too. With how popular thrifting has become in conjunction with the rise of Shein and her many children? It's... Painful. Especially, I imagine, for people who have to rely on charity shops for their clothing.
I think it's worth leaving the denim midi for now! The thrift gods might just grant you the perfect denim mini or a maxi wrap skirt in the near future! You styled it so well as is, plus, you can always DIY later :))
I promise u, the ones that “find” a bunch of designer things in good condition in one store are LYIIINGGGG !! Its always the same creators finding crazy stuff, it has to be fake 😔😔
There are NO original clothes in thrifts shops. Gucci, Balenciaga, Lv, if you "find" is totaly fake and overpriced. I can't remember which LV or Gucci , but if they don't sell the stock they destroy it, they don't sell or throw it.
@@SuitedSkaterLion There are real luxury items in thrift shops that are donated by people rather than the company. When my grandmother passed away most of her clothes, including luxury items, were donated because either they didn't fit properly other family members or they weren't in style.
I can’t say if tiktok “ruined” thrifting but I can say what was once an affordable avenue for those who couldn’t afford department store clothing, has now become expensive thanks to it becoming a trend on social media. The amount of thrift stores I’ve seen that charge way too much for an item of clothing from a decade ago is insane, but it’s because they know those Kmart jeans from 2005 are a hot “vintage” item for folks to flaunt on TikTok.
think inflation and the cost of living crisis has affected costs more - thrift stores have always been to make profit not give struggling people cheap clothing options
which is even more hateful considering the only reason they exist is because of people donating stuff for FREE. So to then upcharge the clothing 800% is disgusting.@@romaeraegan
I am DYING to see more thrift flips so thrift flip away! I loved your vision for the flips in this video, it inspires me to look at my clothes a lil differently
I love how intentional you are about thrifting, rather than just blindly grabbing anything vaguely interesting! Also I'm soooo excited about the mentioned shojo manga and upcoming Kpop video!!!
I just quickly wanted to say that I love love love your videos. Ive been watching you for a long time and you helped me so much on my fashion journey!! Much love from switzerland🩷🩷
@@bltotrs92 haha grüezi! True thrifting is a bit hard. Usually what i do is I go with an open mind and if something isnt perfect I usually upcycle it. (For example hem pants or sew on a button). Sometimes I thrift things to completly upsicle them! There some cool thriftstores in the bigger cities! Hope I could help 🥰🩷
You said that you could see that jersey top that you got being sold on Jaded London or Urban Outfitters and that funny because that brand BDG, is actually an UO exclusive so you’re spot on 😂
Got recommended your video, you're style is very cute! It's so funny, I remember complaining in like the 2000s that thrift stores were ruined by eBay. Prices went up, and it took more time to find gems. I was really nervous about altering clothes, but that saved thrifting for me. I love your alterations to your finds, like that bubble skirt!
Loved the vid, everything is so cuute My thinking on whether to alter the midi skirt or not: I feel like you should give it some time and see if ur actually reaching for it, or do you prefer the other two midi skirts. If you keep wearing it in this length and like it, then leave it as it is! And if you don't really wear it as much as the other skirts, turn it into a cute mini
I'm loving the thrift flip! Please show us when you hand sew your flips! I don't have room in my house for a sewing machine and I'd like to see you in action
I like that thrifting has become popular, because I much much prefer people buying a giant haul of second hand items than giving money to shein, so that's my opinion. Also there are so many clothes in the world, we will never really not have enough pretty clothes in thirft stores or second hand app, and people who are thrifting a lot, they also get rid of stuff a lot, so there is this recycling of styles around. Something I can't stand tho are people who go thriftng every day to find all the good pieces and sell them on depop for 200+ their original price or value. That I think is unfair for the people who go thrift in that specific place that are now out of good clothes while that other person only does that for $$$
Exactly depop and those apps that people sell on those people also have givin the thrift stores the idea to hike the prices up of everything because they know people will buy to sell...it takes away the intended purpose of thrift stores which was a way for people during hard times get clothing for interviews and thing like that it's like make a living at something else please cause it's getting harder and harder for them to get clothing they need....I mean I have started to go to shein for clothing because thrift stores near me are like going into a fast fashion prices and shein is cheaper trust me I don't like it or want to but yeah...sorry for the rant 😂
i live around brisbane area, there's some really amazing op shops around browns plains you should check out! I always walk away with at least one piece, pretty good prices too 💕
Also Stones Corner and Mt Gravatt are good bc you can go to 10 on the same street! Katie should organise a bris meet up/thrift day/clothing swap, that would be so fun omg
Thrifting has definitely gotten worse at least for me since it blew up on tiktok and social media. Much more rare to find anything good and it’s like 3x the price compared to 4+ years ago thrifting. I got lucky yesterday and found an adidas jacket I wanted for years but it’s the only thing I’ve ever found at that very large thrift store in the past 2 years that was worth buying
please post your thrift flips and alterations i neeeedd some sewing inspo with your style!!!!! and majority of sewing tutorials and on youtube just arent my style
The answer the title.... corporate greed ruined thrifting. Most thrift stores sell the good stuff now to auction houses, post them online with higher prices or in the shop behind glass with a higher price. It has nothing to do with tiktok amd everything to do with the fact that you can simply google an item and find out its worth.
i don't know why but i used to go op shopping all the time and leave with insane hauls but nowadays i8m leaving even my favourite op shops with nothing :(
so inspired to go thrifting in my city! i usually get disappointed quickly because i can't find much cute stuff immediately but hearing that you went to 15 stores to get this collection definitely helps put things into perspective :D
YESSS THRIFT FLIPS ARE MY FAVORITE 😍 the bubble hem skirt is so cute! Also diy-stuff would be a perfect trend in the midst of economic depression causing most ppl financial hardship but also the perfect way to go against the over consumption culture that's all over social media in this late stage capitalism hellscape lol Edit. Omg the red top is also incredibly adorable ❤
With the denim skirt, I'd say slits on the side would make it a bit different from your other skirts while keeping the length! Not sure if its your thing but I think it could look super cute
also! I've been meaning to ask for ages but what is the Fruits Basket box behind you and where did you find it? Its so hard finding anything Fruits Basket in Australia :,))
Your uploads just make my day! I was wondering if you perhaps have a list of sources you use as inspiration e.g. IG accounts, specific brands, fashion publications etc. If that’s something you could perhaps make a video on, that would be truly wonderful and appreciated. All good if that’s not quite something for a video idea! Just truly inspired by your style and wanting to learn more. 💖
Ahh this is such a great video, Katie! If you're still located in bris, 'do-op shop' in morningside (i think there's one in annerly too!) has some really cute stuff, ive found. They're also a locally funded charity and aren't big corporation/religiously associated :)
Memory lane has some amazing stuff! But I highly recommend brikmarket!! They have a lot more feminine clothing stalls. Although I didn't end up buying anything I was in love with all the clothes in there. There is also another one on the same strip as brik in Westend I just can't quite remember the name but it was also really good. There's also some vintage markets on in Albion Sunday 31st that I recommend checking out. I went to the last one and got 2 really cute items that I now wear all the time. Hope this helps!
i just discovered your content and i'm OBSESSED! your channel really inspires me to get into fashion a bit more and i can't wait to go thrifting with your looks in mind!!
Sometimes I see the clothes you buy and don’t like them until you style them with other clothes because you look like a manga character and it’s inspiring
your DIYs look amazing BUT I gotta vote to leave that midi skirt as is!! It's an unusual piece and while it would make a cute mini, it would lose some of it's more rare appeal. Great video as always!
Not sure if you can get in your area, but there’s a product called Retro Clean cleaning solution that’s specifically for age stains. Could work for the beaded skirt!
I do watch RU-vid shorts and ig reels as well! - i didn't want to download another social media when tiktok came out, and it kinda stuck like that. And based on recent news, plenty of US are about to be the same way w tiktok!😅
@stealthespotlight Have you made a video about how to take care of whites and colors? especially during the summer and around the armpits or the neck? One of my biggest fears is ruining something and it almost stops me from wearing it - if anyone has tips or comments please let me know
12:48 girl my jaw DROPPED seriously ate this look up also, i'm not on tiktok so i def would watch your yt shorts! and considering the american gov is close to banning the app here, it might be a smart move :)
i wouldnt recommend turning the denim midi skirt into a mini since the dimensions are so different it could really turn into the jorts diy situation you had a while back were it was just a little ill fitting
Yaaayy, my fashion icon! Loved the bubble hem skirt omgg so cutee ♡ today I was feeling really down but now I feel a lot better, at this point your videos are my comfort show ♡ thank youu Katiee, love you ♡
The skirt at 8:00 is so cute please leave as is! since the other two similar skirts u showed both have a ruffle hem, I would alter one of those instead!!
okay so here's my ramble reply: that beaded skirt i think is blank in the back so you don't damage it by whatever surface you're sitting on. it looks good half and half for pics maybe but keep that in mind since the beading is so delicate! also did i hear upcoming kpop video?! i'm so ready! that red top you altered turned out beautifully and can't wait to see more! as for the shopping snippets, i don't have tiktok but i don't like youtube shorts either...i'm pretty much only on instagram. but i like how you added some clips in this video! and as always i loved seeing how you styled everything. that last camo skirt was so bratz! so many cute fits!
Last time I went to Vinnies, I was shocked at the prices of everything! They were all like $13-$20 and I remembered it being way lower than that. Glad you can still find some things under $10. Also! I don’t have TikTok but I use RU-vid shorts a lot so I’d be watching your videos if you post them here!
I loooove watching how you style pieces! Our styles couldn't be more different (minimalist-goth here), but I truly love looking at the early 2000's-Kera-Decora-j-fashion looks you put together. My favourite piece and outfit would have to be the one with the yellow and pink stripey shirt.
I think felt and bead flowers on the skirt would be cute but also just cutting a slit unit would be cute. Also on the plaid shirt, what about a Care Bear Graphic on it?
