Today we are heading to a Thrift shop again and a painted furniture shop. It's a cozy Fall day here in New England, so why not stop by and have some tea or mulled cider and browse antiques with me.
When we are done shopping we can head out for some Autumn colour on my beach as we walk the seashore to the dock at low tide.
And, hurrah! My quail are finally laying eggs, yum. We might have a craft project in the future for these little darlings.
Come join me for a day of the life of an Artist living in a house on the sea in New England.

That is sad @Kerri Clark that you had to miss your New England trip, let's hope the world gets better soon. I really hope and almost feel like it's my duty to share my place now with vlogs especially if there are to be more lock downs? I'm going to keep going out to the shops as long as we are allowed (we're opening up a bit) tho our state was one of the more strict during lockdown, when many were just doing it partially we were really shut down. I hadn't been to a shop (other than grocery or outdoor plant shop) since March. It was good to go out again! I'll keep the videos coming so others can have arm chair holidays on the Cape :)

😊 Yes, they're very charming. 🥚She should definitely do something crafty with those eggs. Even city folks love nesting decor. Find natural items in decorating usually possess a vintage Victorian vibe. Impressed with the quality of thrift store goods in this region too👍. In the outlets I frequent, dishes are usually more modern. 👒Ladies wool hats are a rarity in Los Angeles. Plus, with our typical amount of usual heat🌡, there are even far fewer days to wear them. Loved the times when hats were worn daily. 🐇Easter & Kentucky🏇Derby seem to be the rare times you can go all out nowadays in US. 🐨Bought some darling cloches when visited down under too. Probably lucky for my wallet that chapelleries are not easy to find around here. I have a big head, so it can also be tricky to fit. 🤗

We had guineas with our chickens back in the day. I think I'd rather have had your much quieter quail! Guineas make great watchdogs and alarm themselves and everyone else about foxes and coyotes crossing the property. Needless to say we lost many chickens and guineas to both fox and coyote. We also ate guinea eggs which are bigger than quail. We lived way back in the mountains so all food was valuable along with our garden. It's heartwarming to know that you're keeping chickens and quail. You are an earth mother in life and art. ...Also...THANKS A MILLION for taking us to the great thrift/antique shop! That place was chocked full of beautiful pieces with some at impressively low prices. Yes. I would've bought a thing or ten!!! I am much into Victorian and just anything that feels right. My mother was "into" Victorian and my grandmother and great grandmother...though the 2 elder women weren't really "into" Victorian...they just owned it. ...Your locale where you live offers much as a community and so much more as a place of contemplative beautiful seaside nature...complete with forest and meadow retreats. How fortunate you are to wake each day to your home. Lucky you!!! ...How fortunate I am to wake to my homes; home place in the rich lush mountains, and my home here close to town. ...Your Autumn there looks lovely. Enjoy this wondrous approach to a winter's wonderland by the sea.
@DonnaDavisArt

I've come so close to getting guinea hens, but the sound is loud and I can't really free range either as the fox and coyote will have them. I still need to go back and see if they have that screen. We are lucky to live in beautiful places and I can imagine how wonderful your mountains must be. Hope you are well today @Curtiss Childress

That was such a delightful walk. I loved the colours of the grasses contrasting with the sea. I’m sure the scents of salt water and grass must be lovely.. Also I have never had a Quails egg. Not even sure we have quails in New Zealand. We probably have, I just haven’t seen any. I live in the country not far from the sea. You would find it very beautiful I think.
@DonnaDavisArt
@DonnaDavisArt 3 года назад
Glad you enjoyed it @carol King and if you can get some quail's eggs, at a whole food or health food store, they are quite yummy. They have a bigger yolk to albumen ration, tho I have litle scissors to open mine, as it makes them easier. They lay so profusely , these little birds :) Oh I bet I would LOVE New Zealand and always wanted to visit, but I'm not much for long plane rides so I never put it on the 'to do' list, now with no travel sort of regretting that, but you never know, one day perhaps.

@@DonnaDavisArt The explanation that I have heard a few times is that when people migrated out to California, they only had room for the necessities, and therefore couldn't bring many furniture pieces. I drool every time I see the beautiful "little" round tea table that you have used in your videos. Hopefully someday soon I will be able to travel back East again (I was born and raised on Long Island, NY) and do some antiquing......and drive back to CA in a van!

I know @Phillip Nixon not sure why I didn't just buy it. I regretted it when I was editing this video, but I am going to go back and if it's there I'm nabbing it! I JUST made it to Michael's, as you saw, but I was out filming for my Sunday vlog and just had made my pot of tea and sat down and saw the notification! I don't think Michael has a set schedule, does he? As it seems his randomly pop up for me, but then again I just might be so busy that I'm not paying attention and he is always posting on the same day. I'm rather excited for Sunday Premier tho I hope I haven't oversold it. It's simply going to be one of my 'normal' videos but with a sort of fun surprise-ish? Well, it'll be interesting. And I've just found out that I can now monetize my videos, which I thought you had to have 10,000 followers for? So, I am debating if and when to turn on adverts as I would obviously LOVE to get any pennies to put right back into Bunny Hall and ALL the projects, but not sure if I should wait until I have more followers? Opinions? Here I am , rather cocky, saying 'when' I'll have more followers. Now , that is just tempting Fate, I don't want to get 'too big for my breeches' as the local vernacular goes. See you on Sunday!

🤔Not a huge fan of pattern in general, but I did like that room divider. It would make a pleasant backdrop for your videos too. Dream about a similar one that I can wallpaper differently on each side -- & flip it around 1×/year for variety. 🎉Congrats that you can monetize💰. Tend only to watch ads for channels I regularly follow. Feel it is the least I can do to support their efforts. Not one for premiers, but I wish you success with yours. Too many live concerts & online events to keep track of these days. The different time⏰zones only complicate matters for me. 📺Perfectly happy to binge watch more than one at a time when they pop up. 🏖You have an amazing coastline. 💙Love the diversity of weather & tides on top of that lush vegetation & birdsong. We used to have an Amazing GoodWill near us, but they sold the building out from under them, so sad to see them go, but we also have like Church Charity shops that are a bit cheaper still and we have ONE good will left on Cape, but these are Thrift and Antique shops. We have many that run the gambit from just some junk all the way up to very high priced specific pieces, like 18th century things. We're pretty lucky for the amount of them we have in our area, tho I hope they can survive as the lockdown has really hurt a lot of small business, but what can you do?

@@DonnaDavisArt 🤔Rare to come across 18th Century goods for sale on the West Coast. Although it is a great place for curbside finds. There was an alley behind apartments where ppl would dump🗑cool stuff all the time. Would take a pic & post antique furniture on Craigslist all the time. 😠Hate things with good bones♻️ heading to some landfill. This 🔒locked tight economy is particularly why we need to be sensitive & respectful about haggling with businesses. Try to make it a "win" for all concerned. 🛑Stopped helping others with garage sales years ago bcos I despise rude ppl. Never expect to sell at retail prices, but the crowd that frequents 'em here can be ruthless sharks🦈. Would rather give something to a needy family or interested friend than sell something I treasured for 💱pennies on the dollar. 🏡Lived in my fraternal grandma's home for a while. Between inheritance & my own collection there was a lot to downsize when we decided to sell. The property was in a lower socio-economic area. Word spread quickly that I was liquidating. Left stuff heading toward charity on a side yard that you couldn't see from street. It was satisfying to see things go to a good home vs being hassled by 🕵️‍♂️greedy resellers.

These stores are more like our flea markets not really what I’d call a thrift stores. Do they have Salvation Army kind of stores?
@DonnaDavisArt
@DonnaDavisArt 3 года назад
We have flea markets as well, which I can share one day when I go back, but our Flea markets are much more 'junky' if that's the word. Still you can find good fun old things, but it'll be a haphazard clutter of old dishes mixed with something from the 80's and such. We do have salvation army we lost a nice one recently but there is also a good one in Hyannis. It's much more clothing with only a few things of housewares and such. I think because we have SO many antique/thrift/vintage shops our Salvation Army mainly deals with cloths and just some kitchen things.

Are quail the same as bobwhites? Or are the latter a different bird altogether?
@DonnaDavisArt
@DonnaDavisArt 3 года назад
Bobwhite are a type of quail and we have those naturally in my area and I have also raised them, but these are Coturnix quail. They are more domesticated and a bit larger than a bobwhite. I also find them much more docile and happier in containment. My Una goes outside with me and I have no fear of her 'taking off' a Bobwhite might simply fly away :) But both are lovely to keep and easy to hatch.

Maybe I'll make part of a vlog about it, tho often I just boil them and if I have a jar of gherkins/pickles in the fridge that is just about empty, I simply boil them peel them and pot them in that brine and they keep in the fridge for a few weeks like that. Donna prices here are ridiculous. You looked at a corner cabinet in a shop for $150? Okay we'll overestimate the difference between our money and say $200 Canadian. So you would be hard pressed to buy that cabinet here for $400 Canadian. At least here in Alberta. Where I grew up on Vancouver Island it may be different, but I don't think by much and our thrift shops are rubbish compared to yours. (I'm sure this is the only time I'll express pleasure in relation to advertisements) Your quail remind me of the time a weirdo landlord who lived in our flat with us appeared with a cage of quail chicks and said he was going to raise them in the kitchen...to eat! My other flatmate and I staged a daring rescue - she and her boyfriend took them away to a wildlife sanctuary when he was away at the weekend, I provided the alibi that they'd died on us. Hence in my Twitter bio I refer to myself as...Quailnapper!

They would go about their normal business, but I swear they knew the exact moment when you pulled out a 📷camera😔. 💝Love our variety of local wildlife. SoCal is home to over 500 species of birds & 30 kinds of raptors. 🦉We do have a big population of owls, but we hear 'em more than we see 'em at night. 🦅We have a regular kettle of kites, hawks, falcon & eagles that fly over our neighborhood by day. They 💙love to treat us to these majestic aerial shows where they soar round in these circles of air currents🌬. It's not a good idea here to leave 🐓chickens🐔 or other small pets to roam out free.
