Good Morning everyone! Today we are going Thrifting! After our fun outing in my little New England village's Antique shop, we are off to another town just off Cape to go for a thrift. This is almost the polar opposite to the high end antique, but a great place to fun some fun treasures.
I want to apologize for the fast and shaky camera work in the video, as I'm still learning to shoot video 'out and about' and when I can afford a gimbal it will be better as well, so thank you for your patience until then.
We luckily find a treasure to take home and happy day it matches our American Limoges dishes I shared in a previous vlog.
After that we take a walk down to the dock at high tide so I can show you how drastically the sea changes, taking over the beach and almost covering the dock.

I think so too! @maria kirk I think when the Boathouse kitchen is done it could even be a side chair near the built in banquette seating I'd like to make or over on the wall near where the sink will go and a chair is always needed in the kitchen, don't you think? It's pretty comfortable as well.

@@DonnaDavisArt I'm great thanks!... hand sewing suitcase liners. For a laugh, I decided they needed pale blue and gold trim ribbon, so have made it twice as complicated. I have my son's tin lithograph barn tucked away in a box for his own children. Should try and find the silo that goes with it... and perhaps a farm house to round out the set. I'd love to make more doll houses but there is no market here and shipping them off the Island makes them too expensive. Something for the next stage of life. Hope the chair is happy in the Boathouse.

Yes, 'most days' lol @Judy Rogers as we are coming into Winter, we shall see. Though I am spoiled by our location to the sea, despite it often meaning when we lose power (high wind usually or ice on lines) we are the LAST to get it back, as our area is mainly empty this time of year so on the grid we are the last 'needed' so generator, open fire and kettles on logs is a normal Winter day round here :) But, yes, New England is always my choice in the US. I Love UK but in our country I'm just a New England kind of gal I think :)

Just loved this episode, Donna, from the jazz piano music in the beginning to the sea playing the xylophone on the dock at the end! Sadly I don't have sea legs🤢 but I do love the sound of the ocean lapping onto the shore, heavy rainfall, strong winds blowing through the trees. I remember when my boys were small, my late husband would gather 3 foldable garden chairs and they would sit underneath the aluminium roofed car port we had then and listen to the rain and hail bouncing off against the roof. It was very atmospheric. I love the thrift store... I would be a frequent visitor... I think you should buy the small sofa and leave it untouched... it was perfectly beautiful xx

Hi Donna: That was quite the Thrift Shop! I think I enjoyed it more than the antique shop, and that's a lot. The water comes up through our dock boards, too. The only difference is that the water is fresh, not salt. It speaks of summer to me.😀 I love the sound of lapping water, it's so soothing. We honeymooned on the Cape, many years ago, so I really enjoy your walks, keep them coming, please.

Oh, I'm glad you enjoyed that thrift shop, it's a fun one. I'll probably go back to all these again when I can get a Gimbal and film more and a bit slower so people can just have a 'browse' but it's a learning process every time I make a video. The prices are Definitely better here, than at the antique shop. I'm so happy you like my walk, your freshwater dock, do you have tides? I've filmed this walk so far at mid tide, here was high and I need to do a low tide so you can see how far the pilings stick out of the water and how much more beach is exposed. I love the sea, the tides, the waves...heck I just love being near water :) Thanks for stopping by @Beverley Wittig

@@DonnaDavisArt I think a Gimbal is a great idea for filming, I looked into buying one for myself, even though I don't vlog!😊 It just makes everything look so professional. And yes a little slower over the items would have been great, just to see the items closer. That way we can live vicariously through your thrifting! Ours is a fresh water, inland lake in mid-western Ontario, Canada. Although we have three of the Great Lakes within an hour and a half drive from where we live, we love our little lake and being near the water. On our freshwater lake in Missouri we enjoyed many of the benefits . The “sea weed” was amazing in my flower beds. Sometimes we were completely alone. There was not a surf just waves. Early in the morning while the children slept, I would have my coffee on the deck. The water looked like glass and reflected the trees. I watched a deer and other wildlife swim across the lake. And yes it seemed like a different place in different light. One very old we ice skated on the lake. We did not have a phone blessedly,but the neighbors did. I waked a lot and picked wildflowers for the table every week . The memories will always last.

Hello from Wisconsin. I am New to your vlog, love it. Your thrift shop is quite similar to many of the antique stores here in the Midwest. We too have more expensive shops, however, very seldom will one find pieces from the 18th century simply because they’re not here. You may find older pieces in southern Illinois or possibly Iowa as the Mississippi River was a point where people on their journey west would start running low on money and need to sell things, especially larger furniture - as legend has it. I love the history of “old” things; thank you for the shopping trips. Your walks are delightful. I have visited Boston, but have not been to the cape, maybe some day. Enjoy the remanded of your beautiful autumn 🍂🎃🍁

Hello @Leslie Weber so glad you found me! We do have an interesting blend of thrift/charity/junk shops mixed with higher end antiques (some lovely things in Boston too) and auctions. I hope to share more of it as I can (depending on how our world goes, eh?) I love that history to think that a cherished old 1700's secretary might have had to be sold off along the voyage West to continue onwards. Especially if the piece started in England and worked it's way across the world back then. Old things just have such soul. Well, I hope you'll visit me again and thanks for stopping by. :)

I know, right? @laReynedEpee thou it is STRONG when it's fermenting haha, but it is really good. I also use the 'salt hay' the drying washed ashore switch grass as mulch for some flower beds (usually spraying it down first) but it's a really good weed suppressant. We use what we can and what we pay in taxes, not really sure it's free haha. I also LOVE to use our rocks for rock walls, but it's a heavy job.

Love the sound of the sea striking the dock. What is the temperature of the water? I’m from Texas and we have no scenery like this, love it.
@DonnaDavisArt
@DonnaDavisArt 3 года назад
During this time of the year, quite chilly, but in Summer, in our bay here, as it is more shallow and the tides so severe it can get quite warm. And in July and August out front on our beach we can swim and if the tide has been in and just going out, thus heating all afternoon, it can be close to 79F or so. But, then the tide comes back with cooler waters from the open sea. It will never be the warm waters of your area, most likely. Tho I've never gone to the shore in Texas, but I assume it's much warmer waters.

Loved the walk to the dock. What a sweet lullaby to hear the water lapping....even on this video....may I ask why you don't sail anymore? Do ya'll fish from the dock?
@DonnaDavisArt
@DonnaDavisArt 3 года назад
@Tracy Heath we don't sail anymore as it's too expensive for us. When we had our sailboat we were just vistiors to the boathouse and Hubby's family were really paying for upkeep of property, as we are now the sole caretakers, we just can't afford the upkeep. It is very expensive to keep a boat, have it painted each season, docking and hauling (as we no longer can keep them in our own boathouse) and so we had to sell it. Maybe one day again, but probably just a small day sailor when that happens. I don't fish but want to start. We have a friend who does, tho and he's always after me. I used to fly fish all the time but not so much anymore.

Yes we do have such places, tho many are not allowed to be opened to much. My neice and dear friend who lives in a different part of the Cape went out the other night to a coffee house where a friend's band was performing but it had to be fewer people, masks and such, so it's not the same, not now anyway, but hopefully the world will get back to normal. There is even a fun old dive just off Cape that plays Jazz and old blues that has a character of an owner barmaid/landlady and I'd love to film there, but they have not been open now since March so I'm not sure if they'll even make it through? @@DonnaDavisArt I was afraid,after I hit the submit button ,that I would offend you,but you are cool and secure enough to get over my rudeness...thanks...I saw the Sandwich Antique Center visit first,the followed you to the "thrift shop", I know it."Not Your Average Antiques" is their name,and it's like the others in the area,The Cranberry Flea, Buzzards Bay Antiques, in that there is a lot of junk ,to be honest...still like to see them a couple of times a year,but the quality of those multi dealer co-ops in our part of the world has taken a nose dive for the last decade or so...some have gone under while others limp along with a low grade of goods with seemingly little turnover..in fact many of the booths in some places are abandoned by the renters and rather than have the spaces empty,the proprietors let them stand as is ...for years, sometimes..the tags are even old and faded!!...the ones I used to visit on the cape..Harwichport, adjacent Dennis Port,and West Yarmouth are still there,but nothing special...the Rhode Island Antique Mall in Pawtucket and perhaps Stillwater in Greenville RI have a bit more to offer than the others... Downtown Plymouth is pretty washed up..New Bedford has Acushnet Antiques,which manages a fairly good standard,but New Bedford Antiques At The Cove is a staggering pile of junk with just about zero turnover..so sad....when you visit a shop especially a larger one,and especially on a weekend, look at the checkout area..are they busy? I promised myself, tho, that I'd stick to my schedule first and have perfection second, so as I didn't have time to re-record I figured better to keep making my videos, so I'm not offended. I've been to many antique/junk/thrift stores all about here and it's true what you say. There is a nice big place in Dennis that I'd like to go to and film a few times, but I think that they have a few booths like you mention where people may have just abandoned them, it's sad. Now with lockdowns I'm really worried about the small businesses and especially places like thrift stores and antique shops. I've not a lot to spread around myself but I am going to try and keep supporting the local places as best I can. If we lose the small businesses we'll lose all the local colour, and it's pretty sad.
