Today we're at the Yamato Antique (Curio) Market*, held right next to Yamato station in Kanagawa Prefecture. It’s held on the third Saturday of each month from 7am-3pm.
Yamato is only about 45mins on the Odakyu Enoshima Line from Shinjuku so easy to get to from central Tokyo.
There around 300 antique and vintage stalls, however, less may operate during rainy days or in the heat of July-August.

I was just recommended your channel by a subscriber that we have in common. They were right - I love your channel! My husband and I have two abandoned homes we're renovating, and we have literally rooms and rooms stacked to the ceiling full of quality vintage items like this (1940s-80s). I'm restoring as much as I can to furnish our guesthouse, but also want to start an online/actual resale shop. We live in a rural area, so I didn't realize there were markets like this in the cities! Thank you for sharing. This is so helpful and fun to see :)

The obi and kokeshi are so pretty!!! So jealous of the better quality on the kokeshi, they are resold outside of Japan for really ridiculous prices.

Ooooh that's a shame the quality of kokeshi aren't so good over there😢To be honest the prices and condition can vary here too, but flea markets are a great place to source them inexpensively...just have to dig dig dig to find the good ones!😊

I lived in Tokyo 4 years (1979 to 1984) and went to "temple markets" every Sunday and to salvation army sales on Saturday mornings. Sometimes I got to the flea market in Kyoto. There were no thrift stores then and no big flea markets that I knew about. There were a lot of small second-hand stores though. I still have most of the things I collected then.

@@Signe-p3m How wonderful! A far more interesting period of time as an expat to live in Japan for sure. My father (who is British) and I were talking about this just the other day as he moved here in the late 1960s. The second hand stores in the 80s would have been very small "mom & pops" shops. Which, to be honest, is still mainly the case now. Not many large thrift store chains, unless for clothing, high-end brand fashion items, books and white goods/tech. I can imagine you found some incredible treasures in the early 80s! So happy to hear you still have those items😍

I love your informative videoes of beautiful finds. I am going to Japan in April next year and want to go to markets to get some kokeshi dolls, kimonos and love the beads you show today. Is it possible to buy nice Wood Block prints in markets?

Thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment!🥰Yes, some of the antique markets do sell woodblock prints. Definitely saw some at this one in Yamato. Another place that sells them is Yamada Shoten, a book store in Jimbocho (Tokyo). If you google them, they have a website in English too😊

I love your content! I’m a thrifter and reseller from New York City I was in Japan October 2023 there was a Bookoff store close where I was staying I also went to Shimo-Kitazawa bought home lots of great items for resell and I did very well with. I’m going back again October 2024 but won’t be there the 3rd Saturday of the month to go to this market any other good markets to visit? I will be there October 1st-15th thank you for all the great information

Thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment😊Tomioka Hachimangu holds their antique market (cancelled if raining) on 1st, 2nd, 4th & 5th Sunday of the month so that might work. Smaller market than Yamato but. Also try the Oi Racetrack Flea Market (also known as Tokyo City Flea Market).

Sometimes see them at antique markets and even at flea markets but they usually have foxing (yellow/brown spots). Paper can get spoiled pretty easily here due to humidity. So if you’re looking for a scroll in good condition if might be better to go to an antique shop or an indoor antique fair✨

Gosh...when I lived in Japan in in the late 60's 1000 yen was $3.60...I lived in Fukuoka on kyushu...hakata was near by where the dolls are made ...

No, more likely you can find them at antique fairs rather than the markets but will keep a look out!🤓

@@tokyotique they really are good luck. I found one when I was in Japan in 2019. I carried it around in my pocket for a couple years. Long story short: I was working near some high tension cables. One of the cables snapped, and would have probably taken my leg off if the cup had not received all the grunt force of the wire whipping across my leg. The cup was absolutely destroyed, but I came out on top with just a bruised thigh, torn jeans, and an even greater respect for Japanese craftsmanship. I enjoy your videos btw. I have multiple art degrees, I found myself hooked when you were going through the old and new prints, the ceramics, fabrics, and hand crafted goods. The path to finding a new oni cup has me joyfully obsessed with Yokai now.
