Hi Steve (and anyone who cares to listen), This is gold. The most sophisticated digital 3d motion capture technology confirms that the first move after transition is straightening of the trail elbow (the right elbow for a right handed golfer) in pro golfers. Amateurs tend to try to hold the elbow angle which is what appears to happen in slow motion analysis. The drill that Steve shows here is a game changer. Remember: yes it looks like casting but when the pivot is added it looks like Steve is holding lag. He is not. He is throwing the club head right after transition. Thanks Steve.

This is good stuff Steve. I’ve been trying to get golfers to throw away lag and speed the clubhead up for years. Every one of my students is a thrower and they are all long and accurate.

Mike Austin always talked about his first and only golf teacher making him hit a mud bank with the club HEAD and not get mud on his left elbow. You did a really great job in this video using the vertical pole and the speed training prop to demonstrate that point. Too many golfers still think and are 100% convinced that they have to delay and retain the lag angle - which as you explained is really a visual delay. Great job on how you explained the true secret of how Mike got his amazing club head speed.

Got our first snowfall and I’m in the backyard practicing this swing. Once I got the feeling of extra club head speed achieved by throwing the club behind me the beauty is I can see my club path it leaves in the snow. I admit I also made a few snowballs the size of a golf ball and hit a few of those off my deck. Do what ya gotta do until spring!

I shot a 37 last night with these concepts in mind. The key is understanding the difference between a pulling motion and a throwing motion. The pulling motion is very inconsistent and has been promoted by nearly every poor teacher on RU-vid. The pulling motion also, quite unfortunately, works well once in a while. For me, the key difference is using the right hand to throw instead of using the left shoulder to pull. There is a uniquely different feeling in those 2 swings. The throw feels free and almost out of control, but the consistency is much better. The pull feels like a lunge at the ball with the big muscles. What was nice was that I could really go after the ball on holes that have less trouble and I would hit it over 300 or close to that and I could dial it down for holes where I just needed a fairway and it would go around 260. That was a lot of fun!

First time I tried this was with a 3 wood on a par 5. I hit it about 270 dead straight and then used the same club again to reach the green. I then 3 putted unfortunately! When you get it right you can hear the ball fizzing away. Don't forget to keep your lead arm (left arm for a rightie) pressed or connected against your chest as you swing through while throwing the club head. Very important!

Thanks Steve. Used this today and noticed something I have not seen in a couple of years, lots of topspin. My drives would roll out 30-50 yards after they landed. Hit my best 3 wood in years with lots of added yards after it landed. I have longer than normal arms- 5'10" with reach of 6'3" person. So starting my swing at the top and out has helped my timing. No thin shots today - just a couple of hook draws with massive - top spin. Once again, this has made me feel like I am getting a full swing with better timing.

wow - I need to try this! I've been working on 'holding my lag' for a while now, and my driver distance has not really improved. question - does this work for the iron swing as well? btw - I'm 55, 6'0", 255 lbs and fairly athletic. my best driver hits carry about 210 and roll out another 20 or so yards... if I could get another 30 yards, that would be awesome... my handicap is 10.9

I've tried using lower body action techniques while keeping the arms passive and also active with no success in creating more swing speed. But using my swing speed radar I consistently get 15 to 20 mph faster swings by feeling like I'm throwing the club backwards away from the target. And I thought I was built weird or something, but your technique works for me. It does feel like casting compared to my old swings of holding the lag. I just have to get comfortable and consistent with it.

Steve: I had learned the out-throw move that you teach but it wasn’t until I saw the video you made with Eric Cogrono that I linked that 90 degree unhinging move with the left wrist to the throwing movement of the right hand/arm to make it a full 180 degree movement of the club that you demonstrated. I worked on smoothly linking the initial throw with the left hand to the takeover role of the right, and it unleashed club speed that I haven’t been able to achieve for many, many years and a solid, flush strike, especially with the driver. I’ve more or less taken the handle-pull out of my swing, or at least minimized it, and the resulting arc and unimpeded angular momentum of the club head is a breakthrough. I’m launching it high and far with that sound that sometimes turns heads at the range. Thanks!

The throw out works because your mind feels the rearwards force and balances for equilibrium by pivoting the body to the target (feet, legs, hips, torso, bottom to up.) The swing times itself. It's similar to when seated at a swing at a children's playground and accelerating when you pull rearwards on the ropes at the exact moment coming through. Borrow a long blade at the driving range. It's the only means to hit it pure. You do need to be relaxed.

I am 72 and swing this way with my driver. I would only add that at the top I wait to really feel the clubhead and then I throw it at the ball as I rotate my body. I routinely drive the ball 260-275 and everyone says it looks like I am swinging at 80%. I find it easy with the driver but more difficult with irons.

Steve Pratt Golf Steve, my driver speed is about 97 but my seven iron speed is only low 70’s so although, with roll, I drive the ball consistently at 260 my seven irons only fly 135. Any suggestion? I hit my irons straight but they just do not go as far as I would expect.

All clubs can be swung like this. Just take a more narrow stance and move the ball position so the low point is in front of the ball by the left instep.

thanks for some of the best instruction available! All the blah blah blah about lag, and it's this simple? Golf instruction oughtta be ashamed. You know many times I tried to keep the clubhead BACK while downswinging, trying to 'create' lag??? Thanks so much!

@ STEVE, Hi have followed Mike and now your info for a bit. One thing concerns me about this "hand whip" move is that it could become very inconsistent because if your timing is out, at impact your face could end up too closed or open with obvious results. Lots are advocating as little hand rotation as possible for more consistency. Its a very diffucult thing to time such hand rotation correctly, Would like to hear your thoughts.
@Inmotion70
@Inmotion70 4 года назад
It's exactly the opposite actually. The freer your hand action gets, the more you control the clubface if you are making an efficient hand action.

I kill my driver and irons but I now hook the driver and irons and always had a fade. Seems I hit a hell of a lot more fat shots with my irons. It’s my body turn and weight shift isn’t it? When it is working the distance gained is unreal.

I would start with using video from down the line examining the measurement from your thighs to the butt of the club at address and then at impact. Chances are good the shaft is taller and further away than you started.

Hi Steve are you a still a great believer in the old Mike Austin release the rolling hand action or the one he worked on with dan shauger the under throw release. Which do you prefer or teach to your students, would be nice to here your opinion on this just to clarify my reading on the Mike Austin methods. Thanks 😊

There's no such thing as an under release. Unless you're trying to slice it around a tree.

Hi Mike Austin changed his release after he had is stroke working with dan shauger they come across a different release pattern which MA approved of. You are know to teach the original MA rolling hand action release. Can you please tell us what were the differences between the two, as its very misleading. And the one you teach your students today please. Thank you 🏌️👍

@@marcussheldon9220 I worked with Dan and he showed me his hand action personally. I'm not a big fan and I don't think he understood what Mike Austin wanted. Mike almost came off his hospital bed to strangle Dan when Dan presented him his first book manuscript..."That's NOT my swing!!!"

Hi , are your in favor of the roll release ? Also I read the reason why Mike and Dan fell out was Dan wrote the Book and Mike was going around saying he wrote it ! Is that true?
@Inmotion70
@Inmotion70 4 года назад
@@marcussheldon9220 I don't know about that. Look...the forearms MUST roll AFTER impact or you are doing it wrong....no matter what technique you're using. You would be intentionally blocking it and decelerating the clubhead. You've got to throw that crap out of your lexicon! :)

Steve, well done on your explanation of one of the least understood parts of the golf swing. I would like to see you take a video of either yourself or a top player starting at last parallel. The two questions are how did we get here and what do we do going forward.
@Inmotion70
@Inmotion70 4 года назад
At last parallel the result of all the torquing is making the clubhead run free, like bicycling too fast downhill...the bike is outracing your efforts to crank the pedals.

This has been my natural swing since I've been playing golf (25 years) and have been told I'm releasing/casting the club way too soon (so I had to change it to not rotating the forearms), plus I, like yourself take the club inside under the plane on the backswing so I had to change that as well and guess what I've lost a ton of distance! Just for the record you do have a lot of lag on the downswing (@11:03 probably more than you think) AND your shaft matches up perfectly with your right forearm.

this works so well... the sooner I out throw the club... the better and longer my shots go. But are you advocating a rotation of the forearms as in your demo? I out throw my club like an underhanded throw with my wrists and NO rotation of the forearms....requires too much timing. My forearms are passive ( no rotation) , but my wrists unhinge like a underhanded toss as fast as I can, like an underhanded fastball or hockey shot....ball takes off and goes for miles. But I like your instruction of throwing out the clubhead from the top. Wish all instructors would teach their students to throw the clubhead from the top....they teach just the opposite.
@Inmotion70
@Inmotion70 Год назад
When you blend in the pivot with that move you'll see there's very little forearm roll needed if the hand path is good.
