For this week’s World of Outlaws #ThrowbackThursday, we look back at a highly requested race as the World of Outlaws took to the legendary high banks of the Bristol Motor Speedway on June 9th, 2001!
I'm from Bristol and was their with my legg broke the racetrack let me an the people I was with sit in a handicap section which were awesome seats wish they'd put it back to dirt again
God I remember me and my dad getting so excited to watch World of Outlaws on tv. Those were just simple memories you can never forget. Adding a few live races on tv a few times each year would re boost the sport again
Watch World of Outlaws Every Sat nite with my dad on Dirtvision these are the times I will look back on and miss.. Because every Sat nite it's the greatest show on dirt !
Sprints at Bristol! I totally remember this, so awesome. Faster than NASCAR, on dirt, sideways around every turn! What's not to like? So many legends in this field... Steve Kinser, Sammy Swindell, Lasoski, Schatz, Saldana... Goes on and on. So cool. Sammy's the Man!
He is an absolute douchebag piece of shit prick. I watched him push a little kids face to get him away from him while he was trying to get an autograph from him. Wish that truck he hit way back would have ending his racing career right then and there. He is the old school version of Kyle bush basically. Fuck him
Gerard LaValle ......the greatest sprint car race ever was jason johnson #41 win over donny schatz at the 2016 Knoxville Nationals. If you haven't seen the highlights of that one do yourself a favor and watch. It's got it all.
I remember when my dad and I would get so excited when I was a kid whenever the outlaws came on tv. Especially if one of our local boys like Greg hodnett was there kicking ass. Man, times were so much simpler and the days were so much better.
+thevmanvj Not that it matters, but Volusia is faster, and doesn't have nearly as much banking. Yeah, I know it seems crazy, but the record is there. It's a half mile with wide turns and the corners aren't as sharp, so they carry a lot of speed.
I'm ridiculously excited to see the NASCAR Cup Series run this in 2021! Hopefully they have WoO out there as well for one of the surrounding weekends while the track is all dirtied-up.
@@nickphilkill818 fuck yeah it is. I don’t know if the date is right for sure cause it’s changed a couple times. Really pumped but I’m a little disappointed they’re changing the banking to only 18 degrees. Won’t be as fast but it’ll be a lot better racing at least.
Slammin Sammy he is still doing it I remember watching him at west Capital in Sacramento California in the late 70s him and Kinser put on a show they still had super modifieds running there.been a fan ever since.
I remember watching World Of Outlaw highlights on Speed Channel when I was a kid, but I don't think I appreciated how fast they were going. These guys have balls of steel.
They were racing in packs faster than any stock car could set a qualifying lap record By quite a bit The worst thing about nascar is how it ruined other racing series just prior to ruining itself. I used to watch EVERYTHING, I lived in Charlotte during this time and I’d attend every race at every venue at CMS even ALMS on the road course and IRL before the bad accident that killed fans. NASCAR ruined tv deals, priced smaller teams out of existence and regulated the most boring racing imaginable. I miss racing but not enough to share my money or time with three team owners and a bunch of crybaby drivers.
"If they touch wheels they will come down somewhere near Kingsport." Yes. A reason this race has not been run in a while. Though it would be a Blast to see some time time trials on this place.
Bristol is an awesome track to run , it's a fast 1/2 mile track . Hard into the corner and wheelie out down the straightaway. Brings damn good times running 360 and 410s
I saw Steve Kinser on top of a trailer in the pits at Syracuse watching Sammy time trial, only thing he said before they announced the time was 'F*ck he never lifted.......
One of the best rivalries in sports. Early 80s with Steve, Sammy and Doug wolfgang... So many other great drivers too but those 3 dominated. Then Steve and Sammy kept it going another 10+years
Great Race. Why not just leave Bristol as dirt. Not like anyone is showing up for the Cup or Xfinity races with the concrete surface and all they do is complain about the configuration of the track not being the old Bristol. Switch it to dirt have the dirt late models, sprint cars and modifieds have a few races here each year, and NASCAR can achieve their goal of having a cup race on dirt.
I was at this race, slammin sammy put on a show. WoO showed nascrap how to keep control of their own house, and the king was movin hot. years later i bought sammys raced and dirty diecast to add to my collection
The JEWS at the United Nations have banned many forms of racing. That and the Nazis in the US Government sent the good paying jobs to Communist China. Who can afford to own a Race car now..., in 2020.
Gees TNN was the channel to watch when WOO was on... The issue in today's society is we have to many options of entertainment on television now. This with HDTV has caused every sports leagues crowds to diminish. NFL, NASCAR, NBA, College Sports, etc... The only one is PGA Tour last time i checked... HDTV, cost of attending games or races, etc will continue the decline.
I have the Dirt Late Model shirt and program. It wasnt the best race weekend really lot of rain. And terrible safety crew. They had a lot of problems getting cars off the walls. And the cars were all breaking right front spindles.
At well over a half mile with very high banks, this is one f-a-s-t clay-surface race track. Lapping at 130 to 135? And hitting the odd corners at over 145? Probably.
That rear view camera showing them drive through that roost dust really shows the speeds they're going as opposed to the camera that just shows them from the stands. The stand camera shows a better race angle but the speed angle is that rear view camera.
Agree. This time, leave the dirt down and see how many (Winston Cup and Busch series ALWAYS GONNA BE THOSE TO ME.) drivers can drive on the dirt. I didn't get to go watch the sprint cars there, but I went to the late model races. Both times. Had a two of the best times ever. That track was bad fast with the dirt.
I wish sprint cars would go main stream like nascar did. World of outlaws is so much better than nascar now, and doesnt have 4 hour races. This proves they could do the production end of it.
Had a friend who attended the first dirt race at Bristol and he told me that the first day they were sliding all over the place trying to get the cars set up right. The second day they figured it out and were flying around the track breaking lap records.
Really do need to bring this back if at all possible. Put it on FS1 or NBCSN. I heard maybe rumors of doing Martinsville? Don't know if there's any truth to that, but I'd love to see sprint cars back at Bristol. I get that it's a lot of work and the speeds are absolutely outrageous, but it's a great way get people into it.
Seth Hayman what??? this track was concrete in 2001 and all they did was covered it in dirt, it was a nascar before and after they had this event, by the way, i was there
Clearly the Seth dude is a moron or way to young to even know anything about this race. The main reason they won't ever do it again is because of the speeds they was turning back then compared to what they would turn now and it is to much of a hassle the amount of time and money it would take to fill with dirt and take the dirt back out won't be covered by pit passes general admission food/beverage sales and being televised. Simply put not enough money and way to dangerous. Even back then they wouldn't let people sit in the first 20 or so rows of seats Because they was worried about a car flipping through or over the fence because they was so fast.
How many fans died in the stands from the dust trapped in the Bristol Stadium. They should have thrown some asphalt racing tires on the these wings, and showed the Stock Car boys some speed.
