Thank you for this video. Even tho it isnt the exact race, it brings back memories. My mother die this past month. She was a true dirt track fan. An would go to Thunder Mtn Speedway in Lisle NY every weekend. One year my girlfriend at the time was a mgr for Eckerd Drug store. An that year they had sponsored Super dirt week in Syracuse. I surprised my mom and we took her. She loved it.
36.42635391514315 was the lap time for a wing sprintcar. (the current track record is an impressive 144.950 mph, set by Billy Pauch in a sprint car in 1994). And sadly will never be broken because the Track was tore down along with the Grandstands in 2015
I was watching an Outlaw race from Syracuse on TV many years ago, and at the start of the main Sammy Swindell's wing buckled upward and he actually started to fly. Nobody hit him and he got it whoa'ed up next to the inside guard rail. He got out of the car as his crew ran over with a spare wing and he said fuck that, I'm not going back out there. I think that was the last year they raced them there. Try as I might I cannot find video of it.
+Mike Whitcomb I wonder if it was just a piece broke that they didn't have a spare. He seemed to get a thrill on the biggest, fastest tracks and couldnt' be beat on them.
i can only imagine all the forces on the wings, to have one collapse would be a heart stopper by itself alone. if that didnt kill you the fence would when you rocket right into it.
When asked what he thought about the then new Daytona International Speedway, one early NASCAR star replied "At most tracks we talk about separating the men from the boys. Running here will separate the Racers from the men long after the boys have gone home. " Same idea applied to this place.
My uncle ran his 410 here in the 90's when Kramer Williamson drove his car and said they were running about 174 MPH which is EXTREMELY dangerous for a sprint car.
Does Sammy Swindell's lap record from the 80's still stand? Remember reading that he never lifted while setting that record. He turned left at 177 mph.
@@wesleyd6080 he doesn't own the record anymore its Paul MacMahan at over 145mph at Rolling wheels Raceway about 10 miles from the syracuse mile and its a 5/8 mile track!
Fear, fear, fear! I remember it was right after Billy Pauch put in a lap average of 145mph, that WoW announced, "We don't need to be racing on mile ovals -----." Sheer terror.
It is a horse track but 1 week every year its home to Super Dirt Week. Sprints havent races the track since 95 i believe. Last sprint winner was Billy Pauch.
He's probably running full throttle down the straight he's just got such a big gear in the car that it doesn't let him go to such high rpms it's a speed track not an acceleration track you want to maintain high speeds te bigger the gear the faster the overall top speed.
Sadly, the New York State Fairgrounds tore the track down five or so years ago. It was a crown jewel race for the north eastern modified’s here in this region.
The governor of New York shut the track down after the 2015 Super Dirt Week, and promised a new track as replacement. Which -- in an unsurprising fashion for politicians -- that never came never came.
that was exhibition at 160 plus, i don't think you would want to push it in those track conditions especially after the track has 300 miles of racing already in the groove.
THAT WAS PRETTY INTENSE JUST SITTING HERE BEHIND MY T.V. SCREEN !!! I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE OUTLAWS PUT THIS BACK ON THERE SCHEDULE !!! IT DEFINATLEY SEPERATES THE SANE FROM THE INSANE !!! AND THE TRACK PREPPERS HERE SHOULD HAVE THERE SHIT TOGETHER A ''HELL OF ALOT'' BETTER THEN THEY DO !!! EVEN FOR THE MODIFIEDS, PISS POOR TRACK PREP HERE EVERY YEAR !!! KILLS THE SHOW !!!
This guy took the video and I'm sure asked the driver if he was going wide open. I should think the driver of the car would know if it's wide open. especially a WoO driver.
This place really needs some track prep done to it. Grading, anything... But its getting way too rough, I realize it gives the track character, but come on.
i watched a sprint car driver, one time, way back in the day, hold it fucking wide open around that whole track. fucking balls so big i dont know how he sat in the car.
rumerstain12 the worse part I hated about the mile was the put tarp along the outside wall to stop the freebies and that would stop those west winds from escaping and would make the car move around !
Unbelievably fast, people who talk crap on here would get scared at a quarter throttle in a sprint car. When it comes to the West Coast, I thought about moving out there, but I couldn't just because they only race 360's or lower.
No excuse for this track surface. Same as the white earth moving tires found in most infields ,track is paid to take them, illegally I might add. Many cars tore up from those tires. Drivers killed by them. I'm a Sprint car fan since 1963 and I want these men who drive these fastest oval cars in the world safe. Fix your tracks and move the damn tires to the store they came from.
Not anymore its Paul MacMahan at Rolling Wheels Raceway about 10 miles from the Syracuse mile at over 145mph on a 5/8 mile track during a Woo time trials!
For the guys complaining about the track, this was on Friday Afternoon, after basically 4 days of abuse let alone 5 races earlier in the day and no rain at all that week, I would think the track would be a little torn up
That sure in the heck looks like a horse track. way to skinny to have been designed for dirt racing with 900 HP in sprint cars. That track takes you out on some back roads way out on a thousand acres. that would be ballsie to flat foot that track man. lol
record was set by billy pouch back in the early 90's I believe at 145 and ill bet any of you on here talking shit about this track wouldn't have the balls to step foot on the Syracuse mile its dirt racing the track is what it is either shut up and race or go home 2014 usac sprints are coming back to Syracuse cant wait outlaws raced Syracuse from 78 to 94 its only a matter of time before they come back
USAC Silver Crown cars will be at 'Cuse in Oct not sprint cars. Silver Crown cars are bigger ,heavier than sprint cars. Carry bigger fuel cells and have 350 C.I. engines not the 410's in the sprint cars
Paul MacMahan now holds the record at 145+ mph Pauchs went 144+mph but MacMahan did it at Rolling Wheels Raceway about 10 miles west of the Syracuse mile on a 5/8 mile track during the Woo time trials!
That was always a stupid race to be on the outlaws schedule. Syracuse had so many other divisions on the track and it was always a shitty surface. Sprint Cars don’t belong on a mile track. That’s what champ cars are for!
