Throwing a Chip and Dip Platter on the Potter's Wheel

In this video, I show how to throw a chip and dip platter from one piece of clay. The platter/bowl form is thrown thinly, to avoid the need for trimming when leatherhard. Compression of the bottom and the connection where the bowl and platter meet are imperative for a good crack-free form.
In this video, I use Standard 153, as this is the stoneware I use with my kids at school. Normally, in my videos which I shoot at home, I use Laguna Bmix with grog for my personal pottery.
I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! Yes you can- however it won't be glazed on the back side! But, if you have vitrified clay, it is possible. I don't glaze the bottom as I just don't fire on stilts for cone 5/6 midfire range, as the pieces often warp.

I am in the process of building a potter's wheel and I need to know the height of the turning surface to the floor. I don't know if there is a standard or it's specific to the potter. From what I have seen, it's about sitting mid crotch height, lower than the knees. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hello! The height of the wheel is really determined by personal comfort! Some people put theirs on stands so they can stand at it, and not bend over. Some are made to go on tabletops. I just like mine at a height where I can still rest my elbows on my thighs or hips- and my forearms clear the splashpan. My wheel at home is a kickwheel... (I have different videos showing that) but the height of that wheel is a bit above my hips when I sit... as it keeps me from huntching over very much. Most wheels are made with legs that are a fairly standard height- like the height of a chair. But, just keep in mind you can always reposition it for your own comfort.

I am having trouble centering perfectly. Is it necessary to use that material underneath and pins? What are pins?

Yes! Put it in water- and it will immediately go floppy!! :)

Thank you for your awesome instruction! I went to open studio and tried this, however; my instructor came in and said that it's going to crack in half. He wouldn't tell me why or how to prevent it. Do you know what he's probably talking about? He told me to put a newspaper over it. Also it is pretty thick. I have a pic of it too, ...not sure how to add it Thanks!

Katherine- send me a photo- karanspotsandphoto@gmail.com.... My guess without seeing it would be that you have uneven thickness in the floors and walls(?) . I really try to keep the thickness consistent - especially at the base of the bowl part so it doesn't dry unevenly. Do dry under towels for even drying as well!! Cut it multiple times too from the bat as it is drying- that will help to keep it from sticking. I know the main culprit of cracking is usually uneven thickness which prevents even drying and even heating and cooling during firing.

Okay, one thing you do drives me crazy. Pull your hands away SLOWLY! You will get something centered perfectly, then yank away and decenter it.

lol! Max, sorry that drives you crazy. I made this video for my high school students after a long day at school! I use slow and deliberate hand movements when I throw. Does the final result appear uncentered to you? That is the real question... The centering process, especially on a big piece, is a process of back and forth, pushing up, pushing down... sometimes during the process of getting it centered, it may have appeared more centered to you than it really was until I took my hands away. (The force I apply with my fingers can disguise this for a bit) It had an off centeredness to it in the middle or on the top you couldn't see until I removed my hands.. then, as I pushed it deliberately, you could see it. It is actually all a part of the process... and it was definitely resolved by the end... that's the important part!

Oh not at all! The final piece looks amazing, just the process getting to it bugs me is all. I'm a year three HS ceramics student, basically self taught as until this year, my instructors have been fairly un-involved. I do appreciate your technique to easily remove the dent in the top you sometimes get when coning up. I'll be using it for sure!
