Why is Kirby Allison throwing away these brand new bespoke shoes? This is an unboxing video of Kirby's new Gaziano & Girling trial shoes that, after over a year of fittings and alterations with Daniel Wegan, is finally at the last stage before delivery.
Daniel Wegan has appeared in a number of videos with Kirby, following the entire process of the creation of these black cap toe oxfords. He is the head of the bespoke department at Gaziano & Girling, as well as recently being crowned the winner of the World Championship of Shoemaking 2019, following his runner's up prize the previous year.

These trial shoes look better than most of the ready-to-wear shoes on the market. What's incredible is that even for a pair of shoes that are meant to be worn for only a couple of times, Gaziano & Girling still puts a perfect mirror shine on both the toe cap and the heels. Bespoke shoes are not just about quality and customisation, it is a commitment to perfection in terms of both craftsmanship and elegance.

Beautiful Kirby, it looks like the shape of the toe cap has been toned down a little and I think it looks fantastic. The shape of the shoe to me looks like it really supports all areas of your foot, more so than any of your other bespoke shoes. That close fitting equals more support, dare I say, the most beautiful pair of orthopedic shoes ever made!

Hi Kirby. Thank you for sharing this video. What amazing craftsmanship. Do you know whether the foam pad on the tongue can be installed after the manufacturing process (as an after-market add on, for the lack of a better term)? Much like you, I have a bone high on my instep that starts becoming bothersome after a long day, and this seems to be a great solution. If it is something that can be placed afterwards, may I suggest a video on the various comfort-enhancing items (or modifications) that can be added to shoes? Also, those items would be a wonderful addition to the Hanger Project's line of shoe care products.

According to Samuel Norsworthy, of Gaziano and Girling's bespoke team, who put these trial shoes together: "It is possible to replace the tongue, cut it out the shoe, open up the tongue, fill with padding, restitch together and then stich the tongue back in the shoe. However to do so you would have to stitch through the outside of the shoe, going through all the layers. Which can be hidden by stitching just above the vamp and through the facings on an oxford, but impossible on a wholecut since you can't separate the layers once it's been lasted. Derby's on the otherhand are far easier as you can unpick the tongue (which also the vamp) open it up, fill with padding and restitch." I hope that helps!

@@kirbyallison Very helpful. Thank you, Kirby and Samuel. Since these pads seem a cumbersome add-on for Oxfords--quite a lot of opening up and restitching--I'll have to ask for foam pads on my next pair of G&G shoes before they go through the factory. Have a nice weekend!

Kirby - Can you post a video of the certified or sovereign restoration product a year after use? We've seen what they look like when the cobbler completes his work, but I would be curious to see a pair after a year of wear. I'm considering using your service but I would like to see how the restoration holds up.

It’d be great to have a pair of tan cap toes made from G&G. I’d keep the trial pair, dye them another color and resole. 2 for 1 bespoke. Can’t beat it. I’m sure others have already thought of that.

There’s no doubting that Daniel is on another level when it comes to attention to detail. It’s borderline ridiculous. However, I do prefer a more round toe. I am liking what Dominic Casey is putting together for you. A nice traditional round toe. If you had Daniel’s attention to detail and Dominic’s style, that would be pretty special.

chef souffle Yes how much extra would it be to make them with a decent good year welt and a Danite rubber sule? Should make the fiting moore easy to: - how are they fiting. - I do not know realy? - then we cut them open! - NO I love them!

King F These trial shoes are intended to be just that - Daniel wants them back so he can cut into them and see how your foot has interacted with the shoe and its structure. Donating them to charity would prevent him being able to refine the final product.

Russ whilst you are correct that these are trials, Only if further adjustments are needed will these shoes be cut up. The prior mock ups should eliminate the need for that. I do believe that the wastage seen here is unforgivable in this age however.

@@DappsJames you make a good point, but since these are bespoke, finding someone that'll even be able to fit in the shoes in a proper manner would be difficult. Also, consider how many of these types of throwaways the shoe maker produces versus product rejects or shoes that don't meet quality control in those big name, mass produced shoe factories.

DappsJames You perhaps don’t quite understand what the purpose is here. I’m happy for the trial shoes to be cut up if it enables Daniel Wegan to get me a perfect or near perfect fit in the final version of the shoe. That’s what I’m paying the high price for. Remember that this is all part of finalising a bespoke last which can then be used to produce later pairs of shoes for me without the need to produce yet another trial shoe. The end result will, I hope, be very comfortable and durable shoes that I hope to get many years of wear from, and as Jose Gonzalez implies, that is better for the environment than subscribing to the mass throwaway society. The result is less wastage, not more.

Ben Harrington Think that is his own high standard stuff. It is the kind of highest resonable quality. When you do not care about money soo much but you do not want to trow money away either to flash as a rapper. You are kind of smart, cultivated and very ritch.

They are made from purpose made core wrapped with a braided sleeve. When waxed they last a very long time and don't come untied. They share nothing with your normal track shoe shoelace or even most so called dress shoes unless they are high-end already. It's an inexpensive way to upgrade your shoes. They cost about 10 bucks I believe...well worth it!

I mean I get that same "rush of air" sound with my off the rack Allen Edmonds....but they don't even fit that well. I don't think that sound actually indicates much....

😱 what crazy. I do have a question: - are the "Saphir Medaille d'Or Creme De Soins" with the aplicator an ok product. I been using the normal one but been looking out for an aplicator for my cream, I do not feel comfy about aplying even a bit of polish in my suite in the morning before work.

brandon bentley Good example Brandon, but I usualy spend 1-2 min after work to brush them of and put shoe trees in, if needed I vipe them of with a very damp wetex cloth. Then I do not want to mess with polish, not even in my non bespoke suite 😃 but with an applicator I probably would be confidance enough. Then my kids make a mess in the hallway so anything might happen, but I rather have messed up shoes than kids 😃 But before bed is good generall ide (newer realy tought about it then), first brush shoes and then brush theet. Thanks 🥇

Hello Kirby, there's absolutely no chance I would throw them away:) I have a question about it's construction. I am wondering, how such amount of support around arches has been achieved in this particular pair. Is it just by extending heel stiffners all the way to the joints? Or in addition to that Daniel extends the insole over the arch area and mould it to shape?

The side camera segments in this and other recent videos are lagging. For example at 2:32 and 3:51 to 3:57. I don’t think it’s my browser, since I see the same thing on my phone and on Instagram. Is that intentional?

Unless they need to be cut up, why throw them away? I mean even if they were made for you specifically, you could always donate them which could allow say a college kid or someone on a really tight budget afford a real quality pair of shoes.

They would have to be Kirbys twin, bespoke shoes would most likely be unbearable for anyone but the original buyer. Bespoke isn't like off the shelf shoes that fit everyone. Same with suits, unless it's a twin with the same weight it would most likely be uncomfortable.

They have to cut them up for footprint analazys, sometimes they cut the toe of or other parts to have a look.

theunf0rgiventoo Much easier to produce a pair of trial shoes than to have to remake a pair of bespoke ones.
