I wish to thank you for your RU-vid Station. Lovely work, been watching all afternoon. Now all I need are $'s to get my own wheel, kiln, everything for a home studio. Love the craft, have several of my own pieces from college a few years back. Might just go back to school to be able to use the studio.

Lovely piece. Would also enjoy seeing your fired work from posted video creations. Question: Do you form your own trimming tools? I haven't seen the ones you use before but like them and the results you get. They remind me of a larger version of an old fashioned soft drink opener.

@LoraCreates
@LoraCreates 8 лет назад
Different areas of the world use water differently when throwing. Potters in Scotland tend to use a lot. In America, it varies but potters use more water there than in Japan. Japanese potters use only enough water to create a slurry, then wet their hand and the clay using the slurry. Hope that helps to explain it a little. Regardless of where a potter is though, they tend to use a method they were taught. ;-)

You're so confident on the wheel, probably from how competent you are, very encouraging. What is the sound of running water in the background of all your videos? It's not the blowing wind, it's dripping water...?

+thpt I hear the sound of the wheel running, which could sound like dripping water, and then he dips his hands in a bowl of water intermittently while he is throwing.

I've been trying to practice centering the clay on the potter's wheel, and its been very difficult for me to keep it sticking and centering it on to the wheel, is there any tips you can give me to help with centering?
@RickyMartin-bs4uu
@RickyMartin-bs4uu 8 лет назад
I usually smack the clay (for beginning, just make sure you're using properly wedged clay and make it a sphere before smacking it down so you don't have an air bubble trapped, that's usually what causes it to come up) down on the bat or wheel and then go around the edges with my finger to push it down and seal it to the bottom, then I'll begin using water to wet the clay and go over the edges again to make sure it well sealed, and then before I begin pulling up at all, I push down first to help create the seal better. Practice with this a lot and if you find you're still having issues, try dampening your wheel or bat but NOT the clay.
@RickyMartin-bs4uu
@RickyMartin-bs4uu 8 лет назад
I'll try and rewrite that a lil easier: 1. Take a ball of properly wedged clay that isn't wet (as in water dripping off of it), but still easily moldable. 2. Smack (enough force to make a smacking sound but don't obliterate the clay) the clay on the wheel. 3. Press down slightly on the clay and then press down the edges of the clay where it meets the bat/wheel so you can make a proper seal between the clay and the bat/wheel. 4. You can start using water now for centering but push down before you pull the clay up to be safe. And if that doesn't work out well for you, try wetting up the bat/wheel a bit before you smack down the clay, but DONT WET YOUR CLAY, otherwise it won't stay at all.
