At the time I thought it more shocking than all the hardcore I was listening to, which despite its speed and volume still seemed to inhabit pretty well-circumscribed territory. Throwing Muses, on the other hand, were constantly charging off in different directions, finding a strange tunefulness in unexpected places. They were (are?) real inventors.
One of the most frustrating experiences of my life was being stuck in a traffic queue on the little farm tracks snaking over the hill down to the entrance in the baking sun and hearing snatches of Throwing Muses' set on the breeze from the main stage. I was tempted to abandon my car and leg it down, but there was literally nowhere to pull to the side of the road where traffic behind me could pass. Assuming that Pixies were before the Muses on the running order I loafed around the stage dejected. Some relief that Pixies followed the Muses but it still pains me to recall missing the Muses by such a narrow margin!
I was turned on to Throwing Muses when Lonely as an Eyesore (4AD label) compilation album came out. Been a fan ever since, still today, hope to be for 20 more years, at the least. Thanks for posting!
Yours is/was the bottom post. Does this mean you disagree with me when I say this is a fantastic version of "Fish"? This is Kristin's song and she is moving to the beat. Define dancing.
