Throwing, Trimming, and Finishing a Faceted Stretched Cup with a Stained Clay

In yet another installation of my series of videos on working with stained marbled clay, this video covers the processes of throwing a thick straight-walled cup form, cutting facets in the side while plastic and on the wheel, and then stretching the faceted sides by pushing out the interior walls to create a belly. I remove slip from the exterior and interior of the form with a rib, and allow to get leatherhard. Once leatherhard, I trim the cup form using my Giffin Grip- holding the pot securely upside-down. I demonstrate how I create marbled handles, and then when those are leatherhard, I demonstrate the handle attachment and finishing.

I am a full-time high school visual arts ceramics teacher in Mason, Ohio and I started my RU-vid channel years ago to help my students who may have been absent and missed a demonstration in class. Little did I realize how helpful the videos would be to people beyond my classroom. I hope you find these helpful, and I invite you to subscribe for new videos and channel updates. The name of my channel is the same as my Etsy shop name. www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsAn...
Someday, I will get around to making some videos on glass slumping! :)
In this video, I use Laguna b-mix with grog, cone 5, and I clear glazed the finished cup with Coyote clear. The blue stain I used is a mason stain 6300.

Mudtools.com has info on the ribs

Excellent video. What do you do with the leftover scrap clay (after removing facets) that is now mixed blue and white? Do you recolor it with more blue clay?

I keep a scrap bag of pieces and sometimes hand build with it- or as you mentioned, add more color again!

Fantastic work, how do you seal the cup so it can hold water?
@KaransPotsAndGlass

Hi Max- the cup must be bisque fired to around cone 04 1945 degrees Fahrenheit, then I dipped it in a clear glaze, and refired to cone 5/6 (actually cone 5 with a 25 minute hold.) About 2200 degrees .

oh, and that gets fired in a kiln I should say!

Beautiful! Do you use clear glaze?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 5 лет назад
Yes!!! I usually use just a clear, and it will make the colors much more vibrant than in the bisque stage. You could also use a transparent glaze, like a Celedón type glaze if you wanted to have transparency with a color!
