I wanna see you weasle your way out of the "daggers are OP" vid. dual erdsteels made me git gud at crucible incants because of how underwhelming the damage is without status.
Yeah they are fun to dual but I think there are better options. If you like the rot then use the greathammer that inflicts rot. It will stagger with 2 hits and does like 850+ ar. The thrusting weapons are best with bleed for me. Besides the frozen needle. I just think stagger is best and you don't get stagger with the small thrusting swords. Greatswords and hammers just slap pve
@@stompingpeak2043 i got 4 files with different builds, Greatsword is definitely the best for PVE. Hit hard but doesn't take a decade to swing the sword
@@stompingpeak2043 stagger is great but thrusting sword pair well with shields because of the poke. For strictly pve both are up there as some of the best options in the game. They hit faster than large weapons too so statuses are stronger, especially when powerstancing.
I use the banished knights halberd primarily for stagger effect.. it’s just the most balanced weapon for me in this game, basically every knight-type build I have is using it. Sweepies, pokies, and it’s still a pretty nimble weapon compared to the damage it can do.
This game... I am nearly 200 hours in and have not even equipped a Thrusting sword let alone thought on their potential. Definitely appreciate the video for opening my eyes 🙏
A major advantage of the Rapier, along with its crit mod, is the fact that Astrologers can use it with baseline stats. It's a great early game weapon for mages, especially after you get the Assassin's Cerulean Dagger.
Their biggest problem is actually landing the hits, especially on enemies with stick legs like Regal spirit, gargoyles etc. Also, they sometimes tend to "slide off" enemies with conical shapes, like the larger rats.
One weakness I felt while playing with trusting swords is the hit box. If you don't lock on to the enemy, the attack lot of the time whiffs. Same thing while playing vs oddly shaped enemies like astel.
Super small thing that you missed about thrusting swords: i was combing the motion value spreadsheet and noticed that 2h block counters have a 825% poise damage multiplier. Thats the highest in the game, albeit on a class with poor block mitigation and low base poise damage. However, this leaves rapiers just below UGS for counter poise damage
Antspur + Frozen Needle combo carried me through a good 70% of my first time through the game, and I didn't even think to get real nasty by converting the Antspur to something like Poison/Frost/Bleed. I wasn't playing the two of them at the most "optimal" or meta level, but I had tons of fun with those rapid hits, status effects, and Curved Sword talisman. I felt like a blender on legs with how quickly I was going through enemy health bars.
Bleed so that you can use the bleed talisman Innate Rot so you can use the poison/rot talisman One or both of the “consecutive attacks increase damage” talismans
I played a dual thrusting sword build in my first playthrough and absolutely loved it. Phenomenal attack speed, and the versatility of switching tactics mid fight is unmatched by any other weapon type.
something about the Estoc: it has (I think) the fastest secondary R2 in the game. it comes out just frames slower than the secondary R1. this also means a Feint can be used extremely quickly after the first R2, which can then chain into a lunging R1, as Feints are basically a Backstep
I remember the first time I used thrusting swords. The Tree Crucible Knight in Leyndell was utterly beyond me. I couldn't hit fast enough to fight him in melee, and I couldn't get the room I needed for magic. Eventually, I dual-wielded Frozen Needle in my off-hand with an Ice Cleanrot Sword with Bloodhound's Step in my main. I took him apart in seconds! I didn't even notice his health dropping, it went so fast.
parrying with thrusting sword actually gives me an idea that you can both power stance and have ability to parry which is really cool. Imagine you found attack window and when enemy tries to fight back, you make parry and crit
I think my favorite build I've played with is my double antspur rapier with poison seppuku. The move set is so satisfying. Maybe not the best weapon type because play style is so important to whether a weapon is good, but certainly an extremely powerful bunch of pointy things in the game!
This video inspired me to try out dual thrusting swords. I'm using two poison infused cleanrot rapiers with poison moth flight. It's literally SHREDDING through stuff. So much fun. Gonna roll KoR Exultation, Millicent's Prosthesis and Winged Sword Insignia when I get that far into the game to make it even stronger. I'd use the mushroom head, but I play fashion and it looks awful 😂
As a man who plays fashion, I understand. I use a build where I sorta roleplay as a Raya Lucaria Scholar who failed all the Conspectuses and is becoming Elden Lord to prove himself, and its amazing to use Gavel of Haima with a tiny fkn sword in my main hand
You can also put a bleed affinity with poison mist as a skill on anspur if you don’t want to stab yourself. That’s what I did as it’s a little easier to reapply in the middle of a fight. I also paired it with frozen needle, lord of blood exultation, rot exultation, and rotten wing sword insignia for the quad status build. This is how I finally beat Melania.
I’ve been running power stanced Antspur rapier with a siniliar setup. Both are poison, one with seppuku, other with poison moth flight. Poison moth flight removes poison so you can reapply it, which is super easy with how fast you attack, enabling multiple profs of kindred of rot exaultation
Use the scavenger curved sword and a raptor talon. Occult sepukku on scavenger and bleed sepukku on the raptor talon. You'll kill the rot queen phase 1 in like 10 seconds. Then you'll kill her second phase before she gets out of the bloom.
Anspur on first playthru for me helped a ton. I paired it with the Frozen Rapier and swapped which was in my main hand depending on the area/enemies or which ash I wanted to use. Cool thing is you can keep in in the off hand and two hand it, use seppuku and since it keeps the buff, go back to dual wielding and murder just about anything with bleed/rot/main hand element all without using a ton of spells or items.
interesting build i did was two cleanrot swords with endure on the main hand. with endure, you can trade with almost anything and not stagger for a few seconds. combo that with millicents prosthesis and rotten wing sword insignia and the spear talisman and you can genuinely melt bosses by trading into their attacks. i was able to kill radahn with this setup before he could transition to his second phase. highly recommend trying it out
i got carried by the rogier rapiers ash of war on my first playthrough, that thing was no joke, sure it was pretty mediocre damage from the rapier itself but being able to stagger almost any enemy on 1 use of the ash of war ment it was an easy kill on anything, and i could just kite away and wait for it to procc the stagger almost exclusively. my intent was to use an int/dex build to have aoe spells to account for multiple small enemies but down the road i just felt i didn't use the spells nearly enough to warrant the int so i went full dex til the end and it served me better, and later i messed around with several rapier builds myself. now i'm currently thinking of doing a page build, meaning i would use a crossbow in the off-hand and a rapier in the main hand and potentially use some consumable items like parfumes or pots or special bolts in the crossbow for those rare occasions where they could be useful, it's probably something i will be doing in the expansion or test a little bit before the expansion hits.
It seems to be a really powerful and versatile weapons class. My personal problem with this class is the moveset, I really hate these poking/thrusting attack animations 😅
Yeah same for me, I'm not a fan of thrusting swords just like I'm not a fan of most of the spears. All it does is pokes. That's why I like weapons like the claymore, has some horizontal swings has some vertical swings and has a poke. It's varied and I like that... It's not the best greatsword sadly but it's not the worst either.
@@nathreetimesnineequalstwen7172 I definitely will try that and also some experiments with shields, blocks and parries. Thats why I like his videos, they give often input for combinations I didn't try before.
@@TanakaMatsumoto I will try them out again in dual weild, but my curren favorite are great/collosal swords and collosal weapons at the moment. But sometimes that changes, for example when I started playing, I never thought, I would enjoy melee, then I tried Katanas, curved swords and then great swords 😊
Duel wielding to spam attacks that inflict status effecsts is some smooth brain shit... That doesn't sound fun at all. I mean I guess if you want to cheese 90% of the bosses. But if you're seeking to make the game as easy as possible what's the point in playing?
Hey, Great Epee is best, more poise in every hit. Long reach, weapon from a start, great stats. That's amazing :) Can you cover this type of weapons guys? Thx
I've been sleeping on thrusting swords in this game man. I csnt believe how good they are! I should've known since DS2's Rapier was an absolute steam roller of a weapon when I played it. And Elden Ring is obviously Dark Souls 2: Two
For my own reference: Frozen Needle sounds very interesting for a NG playthrough. I can plan to have a back-up for NG+ and beyond that I upgrade alongside Frozen. I'm interested to try thrusting swords based on their assets as discussed in this video, I had no idea they had so many benefits. Cold Estoc + Fire Noble's Estoc for the swag sounds fun. I imagine most if not all of these weapons will benefit from some kind of status effect as NG cycles start accumulating due to the higher health pools of enemies. Cleanrot + Shield sounds like a solid playthrough I haven't considered yet. Could be a good introductory build to the thrusting sword moveset. Rogier's + a parrying shield is also a playstyle I hadn't considered. Why isn't Rogier's Rapier a unique weapon?? Antspur Rapier sounds like it has a lot of NG++ beyond potential because of all the status effects, but I wonder if that really will be as effective as it sounds considering the low damage. I get the feeling I may prefer a stronger-hitting weapon that can also apply status, since once the status is applied the build-up potential is useless until the status wears off.
I tried dual wielding antspurs, one with poison, one with blood so I could build up all 3 status effects and proc both blood and rot charms. Unfortunately, most things die before you get all 3 statuses going. Still, the move set is incredibly fun.
@@srenjensen2625 No, the Estoc has very nice frost buildup and better reach. Compliments the Antspur very well. Use attack speed and exaltation talismans, whitemask, and attack speed physic.
@@Metaphyve why would you use Estoc instead of a Cleanrot Knight Sword ever? I thought Estoc is inferior to Clearnot in every way, but the moveset that allows for slashes, but it doesnt matter if you dual wield them, so ultimately Estoc is just inferior.
Dual thrusting swords @ 30dex/52Int, a backup Azure Glintstone staff for fast cast spells, & the Quickstep Ash of war gets real nasty. Works great with unorthodox spells like Ambush shard & Carian Retaliation
I really appreciate these videos more than I can adequately express. I've just unlocked the ability to respec my build and I want to be adventurous and do it, but I'm intimidated by having to learn a new play style so it helps to know in advance what I should expect
Bestoc has been my main weapon since Dark Souls. Thrusting swords are basically the only European blades that Fromsoft has done justice - they don't handle like axes with simplistic swings or even just blunt clubs (that stupidly hit the ground and kick up earth as part of their combos), and actually properly function as the sword part next to the board.
I am new to Souls games so I was far from meta builds (and wanted to avoid looking up stuff), but I beat the game the first time using Rogier's rapier, a medium shield, and the Black Knife Dagger. NG+1 and 2 I looked up more meta stuff and ended up rolling with twin Godskin peelers as a fav but I had a lot of fun sword and shielding it my first run :)
A few months ago, I tried to do a playthrough of all the Soulsborne games I had access to and tried to have a consistent build across all of them. For this build, I decided to try the rapier, a weapon that I never gave much time to before. Starting with Demon's Souls, going through the Dark Souls trilogy, then Bloodborne and finally Elden Ring, many aspects of the build had to be tweaked and modified across the series but the rapier remained consistent. From this experience, the rapier has become perhaps my favorite weapon type. It's fast, it does decent damage, works with a shield and I seldom have to worry about it bouncing off the walls in tight corridors like with other swinging weapons. It's become a core part of one of my favorite Elden Ring builds.
When you are lvl 150 and say "...are the best choice.." Start a new Char lvl1-15 and show me its benefits. I tested them my self, yes, they are super fast, but deal also less dmg, same time you cant onehit stunn enemys by them. So saying they are "The Best Weapon" has a bitter taste of clickbait.
I use Antspur with bleed/Seppuku and Frozen Needle... Rot, Bleed and Frostbite. Melts through health in PvE and panics people in PvP, sets them up for easy roll catching, love it 🤘🏻
According to mption values of ER weapons, thrusting and heavy thrusting swords actually do the same damage s R1 when shieldpoking, they have motion values of 100. While spears and greatspears only get 85... Only downside of shieldpoking is much slower attack rate
Rogier’s is my personal favorite just for the heavy attacks. It comes out so fast and does such good damage that I don’t even use the normal light attacks any more.
All of these weapons say that they are able to deal both piercing and standard damage on the in-game menu descriptions. However, upon examination of the moveset, the animations lead me to believe that every swing will be doing piercing damage. So my question is: which attacks do standard damage, and which do piercing damage? I've spent hours scouring the internet trying to find an answer, but to no avail. I've tried doing my own testing in-game, but my findings are inconclusive. Can anyone help me out here?
I'm on my first play through of Elden Ring and am currently dual wielding the frozen needle and Rogier's rapier with bleed on it and it is just amazing.
Interesting, I never actually used thrusting swords in all of my Soulsborne gaming over the years... Maybe I'll have to give them a shot. I already finished NG using various builds and ending with dual greatswords (Blasphemous MH and Milos OH). I'll admit that I generally just thought thrusting swords seemed weak, but you clearly show that they aren't. What about Heavy Thrusting Swords? How do they compare to their non-heavy cousins? Thanks for making cool stuff and investigating so many potential builds in this amazing game.
A buddy gave me his Godskin Stitcher when I started the game, and used it throughout. I played the majority of my first run solo, so using that and a shield did me some good work.
I am now sending this to someone who keeps telling me that Thrusting Swords aren't viable and I'm better off with greatswords. Ty so much, from me and my Rogier's Blood Rapier
Always fun videos these, don't see thrusting swords used a lot, I keep meaning to do a rapier and parry dagger run in ER as I did it in DS1. Looking forward to the axes.
One nice thing early game is that Rogiers Rapier comes upgraded a good bit and the phalanx will carry the enchantments or greases out on tge sword since it's all physical damage. Idk if it's intended, but you can do bloodflame on it, fire, give me strength, and flame shrouded cracked tear, as well as magic shrouded cracked tear, and every buff will apply to the phalanx for god knows what reason.
@@Oliverelgato1 So I tested it and the flame tear doesn't enhance the phalanx. It either only carries the status effect or the flame damage was so minimal that it didn't show.
As I started with Prisoner I spent a lot of my early game with the Estoc (all the way until herpaderpa moonviel). I do like thrusting swords still, but I feel the thrust gets dodged a LOT more often by enemies (or just straight up miss-aimed by the user) than slashing weapons.
I was gonna say, dark souls 3 estoc build will Destroy mage and strength builds if you are one of the top 10% of Reds who can backstab on command. Still don't get how people are so great at that on console. Maybe it's Harder to pull off with the 60 fps on PC
A great weapon to pair offhand or as a backup with a thrusting sword is a whip of some sort; they all (except the Urumi) do strike damage! So if your foe has a shield or resists piercing and/or slash, whip away! And using grease or an armament buff on whips looks awesome (Scholars Armament on a whip looks beautiful).
Are we talking multiplayer or singleplayer? I'm wondering how these stack up in duels. For single player they suck for leveling up. Fine for boss fights, but they demand a level of concentration that I'm not willing to give clearing rooms. Colossal swords or great swords are just far more practical for 80% of the shit this game throws at you.
I still feel like spears > thrusting swords Cross Naginata is probably the 'best' overall weapon in the game, easily the best for using a shield, and ice spear is an extremely over tuned weapon ash. Thrusting swords don't really hit unless locked on, have terrible range and damage. Spears have one of the absolute best running attacks in the game, and powerstanced L1's are beyond safe.
There is a reason literally 99% of invaders I get are using either a dual thrust weapon or thrust weapon + shield combo 🙄 Zero skill required, but highly effective
Rogiers sword is my most op sword in Elden ring. I put the holy projectile ash of war that looks like a crescent 🌙 moon. It does 1400 damage every hit with range at lvl 115
Thrusting swords are cancer in pvp. I keep one ready to hot swap for when the other guy inevitably pulls out bloody helice, antspur, or stitcher. Like, ok we’re tryhards now are we? 🤪
I was farming for the noble's regular sword and got two of the noble's estocs, they are really fun to use and I like them. He's lying they are op idk idc
Disapointing weapon class imo. There are no unique int rapiers in the game. After I got rogiers, I didnt change weapons and killed elden beast with it xD
I used bloody antspur + frozen needle since unique weapons are super easy to upgrade and eventually transitioned the needle into cold rogiers rapier for my RL1 playthrough (I got the stats through talismans) Can confirm thrusting swords OP.
why does my parry not work against the crucible knight duo? i take no damage and my stamina goes down but there is literally no pause in attack. do i need to use a different sheild?
