A very important concept in training Filipino Martial Arts is that instead of focusing on defense when a strike is coming at you, it is better to emphasize counter-offense. One of the quickest and most efficient counters that can be performed with a stick or sword is a thrust. GM Oliver discusses how he utilizes thrusts as a counter in his Filipino martial art system, Pintados.
For more videos like this, we have put together an online course with GM Oliver Pintados learn more about it here: budobrothers.tv/pages/pintados

There's just a shit ton of fighting systems out there built for different types of warfare. Best advise I ever received was preventive. Build insane cardio, be proactive in spotting exit strategies, identify potential threats, situational awareness, environmental awareness, and run the moment you have the opportunity to do so. Fighting is a last resort. I'm a black belt in Judo and thank God I have only resorted to self-defense once in my life when a thief tried to snatch my phone. I was commuting in the Philippines walking on a pedestrian bridge. When all of a sudden my audio got cut from my phone and I immediately turn around to see a small woman with a hand in her fanny pack. My instincts kicked in and grabbed her hand that was in her bag, pulled it out. andgrabbed my phone. She immediately ran back into the crowd. I knew instinctively that she was probably going back to some back-up. So I just ran for my life.

True thrusting is under used. From a ready position we thrust from underneath sometimes, and straight underneath their chin, face or whatever we can hit. Man! This annoys, surprises and gets a jump on our opponents. very difficult to block, deflect or maneuver from; just got to make sure you have a strong grip or you can thrust the stick out of your hands. Also use that puno and don't let anyone tell you other wise cause its an potent blow and very fast.

Lightsaber combat in Star Wars mostly derived from Kendo and Kenjutsu. It would be cool if some double lightsaber users like Aayla Secura or Ahsoka Tano (or even Asajj Ventress in that sense) did some sinawali like action.. I wish they wouldn't just look to Kendo but still.

That is basic in all FMA systems. Nothing special. There are so many variations/counters to any angle of attack. For strike number 1, instead of cutting the hand and doing the thrust, you can do sungkiti (hooking thrust) to the eyes first and proceed to cut the hand before you do the thrusting. But, of course, it depends on how skillful the individual is in pulling this technique perfectly, in sensing/preempting the opponent's strike. And, do you even teach the repercussions of killing a man? Morality? Social laws? The stigma of being a pariah? Law of karma? No matter how skillful you are, you will never beat the law of karma.

@franciscodizon4078

Correct. It really depends on the individual skills. Thrust or no thrust, the bottom line is how fast a practitioner is! Execution is basic and important.
@neomagnon
@neomagnon Год назад
@@franciscodizon4078 Yes. The name of the system is irrelevant in actual fight, your superior skill and intelligence are what counts. But one should understand there is no foolproof techniques. Everything has a counter or can fail. What one learned and rehearsed in the dojo may not work in the streets because of so many circumstances.

@@neomagnonmost martial arts is impracticable outside of a dojo or in a street fight or combat, with exceptions to some techniques. tosses, submissions/ground control ( which is useful in controlling someone with a knife), basic striking, some kicks. Im mostly against old school martial arts stuff because it’s not realistic to a fight or combat. But it still has some good uses. It wasn’t created for self-defense. It was created for combat. It’s an important distinction.
@TheCthulhurlyeh
@TheCthulhurlyeh Год назад
You are allowed to use lethal force when attacked with lethal force if someone uses a weapon like a gun or a knife or a club to attack you you. Can defend yourself with a gun or a knife or a club. If someone attacks you with bare hands then you can defend yourself with bare hands it's fairly simple
@neomagnon
@neomagnon Год назад
FMA is good for defense. You can use a weapon against an aggresor, but make sure you have a good defense story, good lawyer, money and time for litigations. And you may spend the rest of your life wary of revenge. You may successfuly evade the law, but not the law of karma. The pinnacle of FMA is learning to avoid fights at all costs.
