Aside from having someone else load your boat for you, there's no better kayak load assistant then the Thule 898 - Hullavator Pro. With the Hullavator's help, you can lift a 75-pound kayak up to roof height with just two fingers! Easy lifting and other thoughtful design features make the Hullavator a pleasure to use. Thule has included everything needed with the Hullavator to transport one kayak on a Thule roof rack. The Hullavator is innovative and has even received a Silver Industrial Design Excellence Award, one of the most prestigious, global awards in product design. A smart design combined with Thule's construction quality will provide years of dependable and enjoyable use.
Ease of Use
It's what the Hullavator is all about. Pull down the Hullavator's cradle arm assemble and your kayak lift height is reduced by 40 inches. Set the kayak into the lower stationary cradle and adjust the upper cradle to the width of the kayak with a simple wing knob, tools free. Strap the kayak to the saddles, still down a what would likely be waist height. Next, just grasp the release handle and start guiding the kayak upward, gas-assist shocks will do most of the work. When the Hullavator has done its work for the day it can be easily detached from the bar mount leaving just a 1 inch above the load bar. The Hullavator is easy to use, there's no other kayak carrier like it.

Construction
The Hullavator is no plastic toy. This is a highly engineered product made with high strength steel, aluminum, and UV resistant plastics. Thule's state of the art testing facilities in Hillerstorp, Sweden subjects Thule prototypes and random production units to simulations of 100,000 miles worth of vibrations, to intense UV rays, salt water, heat, and humidity. All this to ensure the materials and design meet up to Thule's the ISO's rigorous standards. Thule Hullavator is covered by Thule's lifetime warranty for assurance that the product is free of defects.
🛒 Order here: www.rackattack.com/kayak-rack...
What's Included
The gas-assist shock bar mount assembly is the workhorse of the system. The custom-designed padded cradles attach to the bar mount assembly and are both adjustable in a T-slot track. Two Thule heavy-duty nylon straps with metal cam buckles and rubber buckle bumpers are included. You also get Thule QuickDraw bow and stern tie-downs with the easy to operate ratcheting pulley. Mounting hardware is included to attach the Hullavator to Thule standard, steel rectangular load bars as well as Thule's Rapid Aero load bars. Please see our roof rack category for information on a Thule roof rack if necessary.
🛒 Order here: www.rackattack.com/kayak-rack...
The Hullavator will accommodate kayaks up to 34 inches wide in the adjustable cradles. The maximum allowable kayak weight is 75 pounds. Remove paddles, flippers, or other accessories to get heavier kayaks under the maximum. Don't forget to bilge the kayak of water, a gallon of water weighs 8 pounds. Load bars must be at least 24 inches apart and shouldn't be too far apart that the release levers can't both be reached at the same time. Roof rack load bars must extend equally between 4 and 8 inches beyond the foot. An adjustment may necessary and offsetting the length side to side is perfectly fine. In some instances, longer load bars then those recommended in the Thule Fit Guide may be required for your vehicle. Check the Thule Fit Kit manual for measurements and do the math. The Hullavator is compatible with Thule's AeroBlade load bars and because the underbar slot is longer than on the Rapid Aero load bars, it is usually possible to install one size longer bar than what is the recommended fit in the Thule guide. The Hullavator is NOT compatible with vehicle manufacture's factory-installed load bars or Thule's AeroBlade EDGE bars.
The Hullavator is lockable. Locks need to be purchased separately. This is a good thing especially if you need to lock up a Thule roof rack too. Thule's lock cylinders are available in matched sets. Get a set of six Thule lock cylinders to lock the four feet of a Thule roof rack and use the other two from the set for the two lockable arm assemblies of the Hullavator. In this scenario, all the locks will operate with a single key - brilliant.

I'm 76, getting our Eddyline kayaks off the big van we tow our travel trailer with has been getting a bit dicey....just got a set of these from Rack Attack and it sure looks like my wife and I will be getting on the water more frequently this year. I'd sure hate to sell our boats just because it is getting too difficult to load them.

When I got my first fishing kayak, I didn't have a trailer and it was a 12ft kayak and I had a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe, so I put the bike rack on the back of my car and readjusted the bike holding arms to slant downwards and threw a pad/blanket over the slanted arms. I also made a rectangle/square with PVC piping and added some Noodle type foam around one side of the PVC piping. I would slide one end of that pvc rectangle under the roof rack and let the end of the rectangle with the foam extend just past the end of my back hatch. I used this so when I slide my kayak up the "ramp" I made with the bike rack, the hull would slide on top of that foam so it wouldn't scratch my car. I worked really good. I think my yak was about 70lbs, now I have a Hobie PA 14 which is about 150lbs, so I got a small trailer but I am looking to buy an RV trailer, so I am thinking I may have to break out the bike rack again and load my yak on top of my 2022 Kia Sorento, which has a longer body style. Also, I use some lightweight straps that have a easy release using your thumb, they say don't use the rachet style straps, they can crack the hull. I run these straps through the car, I open the doors and around the kayak, that way I don't 100% rely on the roof racks. My Hobie cost too much to trust a $300 roof rack on a 5 hour trip. I hope this helps those looking for ideas. The bike rack version worked good, if you need a picture I could send you one, just hit me up.

Recently bought two pair for our 2013 Chevy Tahoe. At 0:40, you show the upper cradle can be adjusted with the thumb screw. Apparently Thule has since added two bolts, same as the lower cradle. The installation instructions say to torque them down (before fitting to your kayak later!) but the later instructions weren't updated and say nothing about loosening the bolts. Next, I notice with a normal height vehicle (in this video) you are doing a rather deep squat to start the lift. I've found you can stand more upright and release one at a time if you lift each one slightly to keep from re-latching. Finally, on our Tahoe, our kayaks seemed to needlessly be centered over the edge of the roof. I've moved the upper cradle all the way up, and moved the lower cradle up to fit (takes some trial and error and measuring) so our kayaks now ride on the roof. It makes starting to lower a little more difficult, but seems much more stable on the roof rack. Great tip about tucking the strap tails into the cradle pockets. Thanks!

I just had this installed on the Thule VM1PZ-7855100-C crossbar system. The mechanic said that the rubber strip in the t-channel needed to be cut or removed completely. With this strip removed, there is a loud whistling upon traveling. If I cut them can they still be used if I remove the rack system?

Usually you can cut the chunk of strip out that your accessory covers and then fill it back up after. We can also order replacement strips to allow for extra pieces if you lose a chunk.

@rackattack
@rackattack 3 года назад
The Kayak won't be a problem but, the Hullavator needs a certain amount of space to avoid smashing against the side doors. In the past when I noticed a mirror could be in the way of loading I boat, I just folded the Mirror in and it worked like a charm. Obviously that isn't something all vehicles have, but that would be my suggestions without a little more information.

@rackattack
@rackattack 2 года назад
Your vehicle would need crossbars with a t-slot in them. This is going to be something like the Thule wing-bars or the Yakima jetstream. The Hullavator requires 4"-6" of overhang in order to work properly, so you might need to go with an oversize bar. It would be best to reach out to your local store for further guidance, find your local store at the link below: www.rackattack.com/stores/

Hi Johanna, the Hullavator gas struts lift 40 pounds of the kayak's weight. The maximum weight of the Kayak must be 75 pound or less. The weight of the kayak should be centered between the two lift assemblies to insure that each gas strut is lifting equal weight.

The Thule dealer has recognized the defect and will take the carrier back. The Thule company, however, does not take on this topic and continues to stick to its "defect-free" product." Hello. We're not seeing anything specify as to why the P&H Leo will not work with the Hullavator, the weight is under 70 lbs at 66 lbs, the hull is a traditional shape. If the only issue is the rear strap tension, perhaps there is a solution. A kayak pad turned upside down to fill in the space may provide the necessary tension to safety secure the rear of the kayak: www.rackattack.com/kayak-racks/sportrack-replacement-foam-18-kayak-blocks/ Just a possible suggestion as no one rack can be a 100% solution for every kayak made and yet to be made. How narrow can the side grabbers close down to. I would like to carry a 19.75" wide greenland kayak. will the side grabbers close down enough to hold skinny boats?

I have a Ram 1500 and already have the crossbars. I am currently using the Yakima Big stick to carry 2 kayaks on my roof. I would love to get this system because of the height of my truck. Will 2 Hullavators fit on 1 crossbar?

I am interested in purchasing the Hullavator. Can it be used to transport a Hobie Mirage Elcipse Peddlebaord. The peddleboard is kept in the bag while transporting for protection. Can it also be used to transport 1 or 2 paddleboards. I see the Yakima Showdown can transport both a Kayak or paddleboard, the only difference being the kayak saddles and the SUP saddles. I would prefer the Hullavator with the hydraulic lifts rather than the Showdown.

Wish the price was down a bit. If it came with the crossbars you needed i could see it and the key lock included. I mean really for that price you cant throw in a key lock system. Thule presi must be wanting another jet!

Thule recommend a minimum of 4" extension on the racks to avoid damaging the vehicle whilst loading/unloading. The racks on your video don't appear to extend out this recommended distance. Can you comment on this please. I'm looking to fit the Thule Aeroblade to accommodate the Hullavator to my vehicle. Is the 4" extension necessary?

how many feet apart does both bars need to be from each other to hold a 13 feet kayak ?

Thule does not make a aerobar long enough to be placed on the roof of a crew cab truck

Each option has their pros and cons. Trailers mean that you'll have an additional piece to maneuver around and park, but it will be lower to the ground and easier to load/unload. Another good solution for the roof, especially for heavy boats, is the Rhino-Rack Nautic Kayak Lifter. www.rackoutfitters.com/rhino-rack-nkl-nautic-kayak-lifter/

You'll need a minimum of 24 inches between the two bars. The maximum spread will be determined by the vehicle and how far you can comfortably spread your arms to maneuver the rack

A great video on a way to keep kayaking as we get older. Question: it seems that the 898 Hullavator sits higher on the silver Aero bar than the square bar, is that correct? (Though probably not worth buying the "Aero" bars if fitting these chunky kayak holders on a roof).
@rackattack
@rackattack 7 лет назад
The lift assembly detaches from the load bar brackets quickly and the brackets slide off the AeroBlade bars quickly too. The best thing to do is remove the lift assembly between uses and remove the brackets when kayaking is out of season. That leaves you with a quiet, aerodynamic AeroBlade roof rack.

I'm planning on buying a xl predator minn Kota, without the console I believe it weights about 97 lbs with. Nothing in it, will this rack lift be able to handle the XL predator ?
@rackattack
@rackattack 8 лет назад
The Hullavator is rated for kayaks up to 75 pounds maximum and the kayak's weight must be balanced between the two lift assemblies. For heavier kayaks there are other options from Rhino-Rack, the Nautic Kayak Lifter can handle a kayak up to 176 pounds, here's more information: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qYXMGYs02OM.html

Yes looks great but was I wondering if the Hullavator would drop low enough down the side of my Defender as they are vey high and even higher with a roof rack. The height to the top of my defender is about 2.1336 mitres Do you know what the drop down measures on the side of a vehicle? I get it up on my land rover defender but one of these would make it a lot easier. :)

There is only the one model of the Hullavator. In looking at your boat, it appears to not be a good candidate for this product. You might try the Rhino-Rack Nautic Kayak Lifter - www.rackoutfitters.com/rhino-rack-nkl-nautic-kayak-lifter/

You have to consider that in addition to the $630 of this equipment, you have to spend $300-$400 in of the the roof rack bars. You are actually talking of a $1,000 plus taxes, S&H and other fees. My SUV is too tall (78in) and my Kayak too heavy (85 lbs empty, probably 115 with the stuff I leave inside so I don't forget) to consider this. I opted for a $300 trailer from Cragslist.

Apparently Thule advise us here in the UK that the Hullavator should not be used on Aero bars. . . .

The international product manual for the 898 provides instructions to mount to Thule T-Track Bars (section 3): www.rackoutfitters.com/content/kayak-load-assist-rack-thule-hullavator-898.pdf

Well it looks like I may stand corrected. I should have said, Wing Bars with the T-Track system, which I have. It's quite annoying that the Hullavator is definately a good piece of kit yet everywhere I have looked (even on the UK Thule website), the advise here has been "Don't put them on Wing Bars. Only Pro Bars and Square bars are suitable" - Bugger :o((

+James Lester And your point is? First, it's a loading system. Second, if you can't get your kayak on your truck, doesn't matter how much the kayak cost, now does it? Mine are not less than the $400-600 cost of these loaders.
@jameslester6785
@jameslester6785 8 лет назад
+Mary Ann Miller First read what I said. "It MIGHT very well cost more than your kayaks". I didn't say all kayaks or my kayaks. Sure, it's a loading system. There are many other types systems out there for far less money. I purchased a bed extender for my pick up. Cost $78. I can load 2 kayaks safely in 5 minutes. In my opinion, Thule products are way overpriced. Look for other alternatives.

I am under 5 feet tall and drive a Chevy Tahoe. I have to climb on top of my truck to load my boats. Disabilities are making that hard. What alternatives are out there? I have J cradles. When I first looked at this system it was over $1000.
@jameslester6785
@jameslester6785 8 лет назад
You could always look at the Malone Telos system. J bars and lift is about $400. Another is a Reese Towpower for about $60. although I'm not sure if that would work for you.
