I have been looking for a video demonstrating this exact thing for YEARS and somehow just now finally found this. It’s the only accurate demonstration of picking up cast on stitches for a thumb that also incorporates bridging those edge gaps. Thank you so much!!! No more wonky thumbs in my knitting!
I've been watching video after video on You Tube for days trying to figure out how to knit mittens or fingerless mitts and no one till now has captured my attention as well as you. Thanks for your EXCELLENT video! As someone else said, the idea of coloring the strands 'pink' was genius. It cleared up my doubts. Keep up the wonderful work!
No more holes!!!! this video goes directly to my favorites!!!! Thank you so much, you are a great teacher. I love the way you take your time to explain every step. Love your nails also!
Thank you so much for this! My mitten pattern instructions were just like 'knit up 4 stitches' and I'm a knitting novice so had no idea what they were on about. This was insanely helpful!
Wow. This is one of the clearest and most helpful knitting vids I've ever seen. Thank you so much for this tutorial - and for the helpful tip on closing up the "holes" in the gusset. I'll be subscribing to your channel!!!
You just saved my sanity! THANK YOU! I have reworked a pair of mittens at least 10 times trying to get the gusset right. Every time the holes just got bigger & bigger. I just pulled those mittens out to try your method, all the while thinking the holes are so big now it's too late for this too work. IT WORKED!!!! Oh the magic of "ditch stitches"! Again, I can't thank you enough for taking your time to share the magic :D
I'm in the process of making my first flip top mitts and after doing the thumb I was so disappointed to have a huge hole! Your video was well done and thank you for educating me on my next mitt. So nice to learn new things!
Thank you! This video along with another saved me from scrapping my whole project and starting again. While I didn't pick up entirely correctly it looks a lot better than it did before I saw this video.
O.M.G!!!!!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!! what an incredible video,I have had trouble for ages on the 3rd needle! what can I say?? your awesome!
Awesome! I kept getting stuck on how to do the thumbs; I would end up just trying to invisibly sew up the holes, but you know it didn't look right. Thanks so much!!
Every stitch has 2 legs with one if front of the needle and one behind. When you pick up one leg the stitch is then seated on the needle correctly. Sounds funny, but it works.
Thank you for your video. It really helped me out with this pattern: Handed Yes, Fingered No - Mitts that Fit by Ellen M. Silva. Now I can have neat thumbs!
This is very helpful! Do you have a video that shows how to set this up? I want to use this technique to knit arms on a dog sweater. I haven't done anything like this yet but when ever I need to learn something new I watch your videos. You are a great teacher, thank you!
@50sharpie The fingerless gloves you are requesting can be found in the FREE pattern section of my Pattern Store on my website. Sorry, but RU-vid does not allow me to give you a link. Please let me know if you have any trouble locating the pattern.
Thanks for the great tutorial. I notice almost all mitten patterns have us cast on stitches after putting the thumb gusset stitches on a yarn holder. Would it work just as well to do increases in the hand portion in first round of the thumb gusset, adding the "live" stitches back that were used in the gusset?
What do I do if I'm doing this on circular needles? How do I pick up a stitch on the main body and what stitch on the mitten? I'm not on double pointed needles! This doesn't tell me anything! 😠😠😠
