Guys, I just wanted to share about the ottoman ring with the protective leather lip. I am Turkish; After watching Armin's prior video I contacted the producer Bekir Büyüksındır who is also Turkish. He is custom making the rings to your finger(size/fit) from a price I(a poor Turkish Student) find very affordable(I bought one). I was sad that you will most definitely won't find this Turkish craftsman on amazon/ebay etc. and I wanted to share. I am not related to the guy nor does he know I am writing this comment so I don't think it would be right to share his contact information or prices :( Armin you are the greatest instructor ever. I love your videos

Great resource Armin, thanks for taking the time to make it! The one thing I'd add about the Ming/Gao Ying is that it is even more of an expert's ring than some of the Turkish "shallow hook" ring styles. This is because those string guards really hide the feedback from the string, so you need to know what you're doing with the string without being able to feel it. The string pinch on other rings is unpleasant, but is very very instructive! It teaches the balance you need in order to move up to the most advanced designs. Just my thoughts. :)

Korean traditional way. Plant an ox horn from a slaughter house in the soil for one year or for several months so that you get clean bony stuff. Then cut .

Nice review, thank you! In my 8 years experience of shooting only thumb ring, I found that horn rings are superior, they donțt brake (or very seldom) they donțt get old, like plastic ones that are more prone to splitting over the years, and they have a flex that allows you to feel the string and "weight the bow" in order not to use more force than necessary. The metal ones are not flexing and they are uncomfortable on cold weather. For beginners though, it is better to start low poundage and leather protection until they get the move. I make my own rings and also for my students from buffalo or cow horn and I make an unique design developed over the years.

I've only shot with Mediterranean draw, but I want to learn thumb release. Glad I sub to you, bc you provide information that isn't really found anywhere else on RU-vid. I still haven't decided on a ring yet, trying to figure out whats good for a beginner, but also durable and just a good ring in general. Amazon has cheap leather ones for under 7 USD. But I get the feeling they won't last long. Anyways great video as always Sir Armin.

Hi! Mr. Armin😀Good to see your video. I've been away from archery. I'm almost without a thumb callus.😅👍 When come back to practice, may need one. It would be a good idea to try to make one out of PVC just for science proyect. The one I have is soft leather and I don't normally wear a ring. As always thanks for the information video. Cheers.👊😀

The struggle was real... I bought a thumb ring that made out from some sort of plastic an amber colour piece of beauty. On it's surface a fly would fall on his arse as they get used to say in order to describe how smooth it is. I still no have any bow below so I gone for my 50# draw weight Fekete Bég made by Jozsef Monus the White Wolf. I were hit a 60x60 cm polyfoam target from 180 meters and a 1 square meter target area round a flag pole from 240 meters by this bow. This is my world by the way. My thumb was burning from pain. I wasn't able to shoot more than 8 or 10 shots in a row with my every day bow. The pain is beyond description. And twist my lower arm into a different angle was also Hell of a struggle! I almost failed to full draw my own bow. Than I felt an unnatural tension in the bow as well like it would want to twist or brake. Regardless how careful I was and I were watching every social media video about khatra and thumb release in general and I analysed all footage frame by frame for better understanding. Still no progress... Aim made it way worse. I don't see the arrow on the right side of the bow at least the frontal third of it is missing from my view. If I twist everything so badly to see the arrow and the target than without of a khatra the bow shoot dangerously out to the right. Pull the same weight by a single finger than I get used to pull by 3 finger under technique is not possible without learn everything on a 25-30# super light bow first. And I highly recommend don't even try without help from an experienced archer mate! Not to mention I saw no gain! Guys who thub draw don't shot more accurate as farther we go my adventages just keep growing and soon or later they give up compete with me. In theory by khatra we supposed to be shoot stronger without all the friction between bow and arrow, almost like a compound bow with a drop-away rest. we didn't see it in flight archery. Penetration in close targets are significantly better but they never shot farther as I do even by my own very same bow and arrows when I gave it to them to try their best. I still have that thumb ring but buy a weaker bow only for thumb draw just doesn't worth it. Maybe one day...

I like that you are using the Okcubaba bow for this. A great value for the money, tough as nails, easy to take care of. The better bows are better and worth every penny, but I don't need that to have fun. And I my heart does not skip a beat when I drop it... ;)

Good informative video Armin, I'm not used to thumb ring but I bought myself one, my local tournaments and competitions consider every thumb ring a release aid (like a compound bow release aid) and as such I don't often shoot with it as it's a completely different technique. It's a great deal of fun though and I sometimes get out the ring after some period of shooting, the arrow on the other side and the way of "not aiming" makes it a very enjoyable challenge. Something else, a thumbring is very easy to keep with you in your archery gear, must be easier to make then a glove too!

While the post isn’t new, or your comment, I just found this channel/sub’d. Armin is awesome. My comment is in two parts. The first is more directly in response to yours and regarding the mention of a glove. Can’t (maybe has?) someone make a leather (and hardened even where needed) glove with an integral thumb ring? Of course I could just wear a leather [work] glove as I generally do on my bow hand but I’ll suspect unless it’s practically skin tight it’ll result in sloppy release. Different 3 finger gloves (full palm or just tips) result in noticeable differences for me at least which is how I’ve always shot. Which brings me to part two… I’ve been shooting for decades but it’s been 3 finger Western release (compound bows even - never got used to a mechanical release) and recently went back to traditional archery and a longbow. I used to hunt (only with compound bows & tech’d out) and do club 3D shoots. Have only been static target archery at short distances 10-30 yds with my longbow (reflex/deflex 64” 45#@28” draw) but really liking it so much. Haven’t settled on full instinctive vs gap vs [even] string walking. The latter is more comfortable currently as it’s closer to actual aiming and singing I just picked up after talking with someone doing it at a range I visited. All that taken into account… What’s your take on how to get started? I have tons of videos to watch here but Christmas is coming and new toys for me would be great to put on my list!

@@troybarker2433Oh good question! (New to the channel & sub’d). My thoughts re: string walking? I recently started (3 months now after 40+ years on regular 3 finger - one above/2 below) and like it a lot. But that’s because I’m aiming and is the whole point of the technique. It does however change the draw of the arrow as you walk thus there’s energy differences. I also span 2 in/5 cm going from 10 to 40 yds/m shooting my 45# longbow. Back to thumb rings and string walking though… I guess you could use the technique and it may enable more precise/consistent positioning when doing so vs fingers (gloved or not). In fact I can even see somehow indexing the serving such that you can slide up and down for the various distances. That would be cool for a 3D field shoot!

In my opinion nothing beats leather. It's tight, you don't have to adjust it all the time, you don't lose the feeling and you train your thumb so you can shoot like Armin one day, without a thumb ring 😁 Also, you don't have to worry about the size. That's a big plus! That being said, there is a certain pleasure in matching your thumb ring to your shooting style.
@godwill7968

Great sir, but i prefer to get a victorian thumb ring but modified with a little leather inside 'V' hole. Because we get protection from the tumbring, we got clean release and that leather can protect you pinching your skin from the string.

@sasasasa-lx6cl
@sasasasa-lx6cl 4 года назад
If the ring is purchased from good source, like Alibow it should work. If you are uncomfortable and thumb is bruised most likely draw weight is too high forcing you to place fingers in wrong position, probably pinching thumb with index and middle finger. It will slow the release and string may bruise the tip of the thumb. Try 25-30 pounds bow first. Also, techniques differs for different types of rings There is a chance that your hand differs significantly from average but it is minimal.

One thing I cannot figure out is how should a shallow hook thumb ring fit on you? I have the one from Alibow and I get it over the joint of my thumb and after rotating 90° there's no chance of it coming off but it also is very loose and able to slide freely between my thumb knuckle and joint. I cannot get it to snug up on my joint neither. It just hits bone and no matter how hard I try and get it to stick, it just slides back down toward my knuckle as soon as any force is applied on it. Also, are you supposed to be pressing the large surface against your middle finger and the groove is behind the contact surface or are you pressing the groove itself against your middle finger?

The lightest bow I have is 30lb and no matter what I try I can't get a shallow hook to full draw the 'proper' way. No matter what I do, the string slips between my middle finger and the ring. Even when i prop the bow up and just try to pull straight without trying to worry about form. It just doesn't hold. I can get away with a partial angle, but not the straight on near parallel angle that Armin is showing.
