Played on Konami Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection
Review: This is the newest game on this arcade collection and I think it’s the best.
The weapon power system is pretty simple. You just keep collecting every power up. There is no tactical collecting. Your weapon just gets stronger until you die. There aren’t different weapons to collect so while it seems lacklustre, you can quickly make the weapon fill a lot of the screen, and thankfully, there are lots of places to collect power ups, so if you die, you can quickly get back to being fully powered up. This makes the game a lot more enjoyable than previous ruthless arcade games.
You get three smart bombs per level or continue but you really have to save them for one enemy that appears multiple times in every level. It’s like a mine and it always explodes (whether shot or not). In the explosion, loads of bullets spray out, which are OK to dodge, but one of the bullets is a homing bullet. It is possible to dodge but you have to be very lucky. I couldn’t work out a way to dodge consistently and this enemy would kill me 9 out of 10 times if I didn’t have a smart bomb. It usually would still kill me in every level because there are usually more than 3, and I would waste all my smart bombs on the first 3.
I played this game making lots of save states as I had to with all the other games on the collection, because they were designed to give you three continues, no matter how many credits you put in. This made the game incredibly difficult as I would die over and over and save every 20 or so seconds. But about half way through I did a test and found out that there is no limit to continues and you can just continue from where you were, without going back to checkpoint, with unlimited continues. This is the only game on the collection that is modern enough to have this standard. It made the game much better for me and I just played through the whole game again to save myself 1-2 hours of editing because editing games with save states is a nightmare.
The bosses on this game are actually very easy for this kind of game. It’s not that they aren’t difficult, it’s just that they die so quickly, I didn’t get much chance to get hit myself.
This is a refreshing game to play as the other games on this collection were so brutal with their limit on continues and checkpoints. Refreshing that I could edit it quickly too as I fear editing videos I use save states on.
