This is exactly how he started his debut Toronto show on December 21st, 1975. Just him, his harmonica, and Roy Bittan on piano.... followed by a standing ovation in which everybody was standing on their chairs as the rest of the E Street Band filed onstage. Brutally cold outside and hot, hot, hot inside. I was lucky enough to be in the 4th row on the centre aisle and will never forget that night. Glad this video is available for all to see and experience. It was my first Springsteen show and since then I've seen him 254 more times, including every Toronto show, and across the US.

@@MrThebestdirector Yes. Bruce came down on his knees and took the girl in front row aisle seat (north side) by the hand and sang just to her. It was eerily quiet, just like here. Then he scampered back up on stage and there was an instant standing ovation -- but everybody was standing on their chairs. Never seen that before or since. Incredible show of appreciation and respect. But watching this you can understand. In Toronto that night it was a typically cold late December night, about -24 C at show time, colder when we got out. The band's wheels were a mid-1960s GM motorhome and it was left running during the show to keep it warm for their trip home to New Jersey. There's a great bootleg of that night but about half the later songs were missed because the taper's batteries got too cold in the GA line-up outside.... My friends that I hauled along teased me that they would hate it, but they were on their chairs applauding with everyone else after Thunder Road. Now I tease them... I knew Born To Run then, but didn't know his first two records and hearing their songs live the first time blew me away. Rosalita was just one of the showstoppers...

Thunder Road is one of my 5 top favorite songs of all time. I saw this Springsteen tour in a 3000 seat venue in Memphis in 75 or early 76. All my girlfriend could say was unbelievable when I asked her how she was liking the show. After nearly 4 hours the show ended and she had tears rolling down her face saying how she wished it would never be over. What a wonderful surprise to find after another sleepless night fighting the ravages of growing old. Well dear friend, Julie, I wish it would never be over too.

@joe jitsu After the Time and Newsweek's covers a lot of people I knew liked to diss on Springsteen. I would always challenge them to go to one of his concerts and then get back to me. I never had anyone come back disappointed. Of course the tickets were only ten bucks or so back in those days..
@goat2558
@goat2558 4 года назад
@joe jitsu I can honestly say I was a Springsteen fan prior to Born to Run, we had a really great college station that played his earlier stuff, but that album took rock and roll and myself to a whole new place. Born to Run is the only song that I remember exactly where and what I was doing when I first heard it. I was setting in my moms car listening to the radio while she payed some bills. The moment it ended I literally ran to Camelot music, the only record shop in town. I then had I bought the very first Born to Run album sold in Raleigh TN. a suburb of Memphis. I bought it before the record store had even put it on their shelf, the clerk was kind enough to get it out of a shipment that was still in the back. .

This version of Thunder Road is the best live performance on You Tube. I come back to this every couple months just to remember what greatness is. The newness of Bruce to The UK and the mix of his voice and the killer piano, make it such a raw performance . The way it builds and finishes to an enormous applause, must have been something to witness that night. This is perfection.

I'm a child of the 80s, which means I missed the coolest Springsteen ( _Darkness at the Edge of Town, Nebraska_ ) and lived through the hyper macho _Born in the USA_ Springsteen, a caricature of the man I could never identify with. Years later, someone gifted me both the _Born to Run_ and _Darkness at the Edge of Town_ box sets and the former included a disc with this performance. I was floored. And then I realized that maybe the most interesting Springsteen was the one right after the release of _Born to Run_ and before superstardom. I would have loved to have been in the audience for that concert.

@@YouBetterBelieveIt Springsteen did a podcast with Barack Obama called _Renegades: Born in the USA_ where both men talk about their lives and what motivated and affected them through the various stages of said lives. Springsteen talked about his alienation from the person he was during the _Born in the USA_ period. The weight lifting, the mass appeal, the Hollywood wife, all of it. I never identified with _that_ Springsteen, and lo and behold, neither does the man himself. And he was a lot more self-critical in those interviews than my "take" is. Give it a listen. It's free.

One of the first live versions of the song (album released August 25, 1975; concert November 18, 1975). Almost fifty years later, it remains, in my opinion, the most beautiful version of "Thunder Road": clean, linear, without frills, with only the Roy Bittan's piano in the background and Bruce's wonderful performance as if reciting a poem. I've asked other people this question and never received a very good reply. I assume your first language is Portuguese but you appear to be very good with English as well. Which brings me to this question, A lot of English language bands have really great followings in countries where English isn't the first language. So do the people in those countries understand what the songs are saying? Is English that well understood in say Portugal? I know that very few Americans have a working knowledge of other languages which is why bands from non English speaking countries don't have the huge followings here that Springsteen and others have over there. In fact it seems that being multilingual is now being frowned upon in these strange times American's find ourselves living in..

No matter what happens, keep moving forward and never give up on life! Life is a gift, no matter how bad the road conditions seem, there is always redemption after one of the curves. From experience in my more than 40 years, a good part of the road is dirty and badly finished, but the small stretches, which contain beautiful landscapes, will always come, and will be worth the journey! Never give up! Be alright! And always listen to the boss! (y)

Usually, I hate it when artists pare back their songs to the bones, and I usually want to hear the full production from the record... but man, his vocal delivery is so precise, so heartfelt, so exacting on pitch and in the pocket, that this is wildly entertaining just listening to him solo, with Roy tearing it up in accompaniment.

What a vocalist Springsteen was (& is). This performance topples any other sing&song writer´s by a mile. It´s monumental, it is passionate, it´s poetic and it´s technically sublime. This, my friends, it can´t be learned in any institution. This can´t be reproduced in any talent show. This is something raw & natural - a pure un-refined musical talent in full display. What power! Wauw!

This is one of those things in life that seems almost too good to be true. I mean think about it... a song, a little song. This song doesn’t even seem real to me. It’s a song thats been a part of my life since I was born. I remember my mom blasting it through the house when I was 3 years old while she cleaned. I didn’t know what it was about. I didn’t know who it was by. But it spoke to me. Not just this song, but so many of Bruce Springsteen’s song are more than just songs. They’re reminders of friends, family, good times & bad.

In those days, you listened and were in the moment. You experienced something unique with every concert, creating memories that were only yours. In the best of moments, like during this song, the audience connected and became one as they witnessed this masterpiece, and that made it even stronger. In those moments, you were afraid to even breathe as the sound of ones breath could destroy the almost palpable feeling in the air. No cellphones to live through, no urge of having to share the moment with anyone else than those around you. Sometimes, in some ways, things were better in the old days. Today, much has been lost. The moments have been replaced by digital movieclips meant to be consumed quickly and forgettable so one can get too the next clip. Now, people look at things like this indirectly, despite them being right there, by staring to the outstreshed arm holding the filming phone. We need to learn how to listen and be in the moment again. The first step - leave the mobile phone at home when going to a concert.
