Amazing, I flew in helicopters quite a few times, and I was rather surprised to discover that they could almost do a loop in a helicopter (where they go straight up, seem to almost stall, then they rotate the tail of the aircraft around so it's pointing straight up, then the whole aircraft, nose first, goes straight down, and levels off). It's more fun when you know it's about to happen, and your first reaction isn't to look for a parachute.Nevertheless, I've loved to fly ever since, although they won't let me get behind the stick just yet, at least not officially. A good friend became an Army pilot, of the same helicopters. Also of German ancestry, actually. A good man, whom I sure went on to be a great pilot. Please keep these videos coming. I always wondered how they did this. P.S. If there were a combat flight simulator developed in the US, perhaps with US pilot input, or even ownership, it is conceivable that there might be tournaments between virtual pilots, and some of these might become as popular to watch as many sports tournaments are. To really capture the world's attention, however, you might have the semi-finalists and finalists fly real combat jets, drones that is, controlled locally, from on site, perhaps somewhere in the New Mexico desert, or perhaps at sea. As with race cars, you might have corporate sponsors for the drone pilots' and their aircraft, but in this case, you might have Raytheon, Lockheed, Boeing, etc. sponsor the various aircraft, which they might custom develop for the semi-finalists and finalists. Perhaps even with real live fire ammunition, but with perhaps the new 6.8 cartridge developed for the Army's Next Gen Weapons Platform (which should be an improvement over 7.62x51, lighter, less recoil, and longer range, or perhaps with a .338 Norma Magnum cartridge for much longer range, but a lot more weight and recoil), instead of 20mm, and with little 1/4th scale versions of the new Raytheon Peregrine missile, if they would let us use them. Even a tiny little AESA radar, perhaps? This would mean you couldn't have a live audience, of course, but I think it could be done, within a limited air space set aside for this purpose. Perhaps at sea would be better, I'm not sure. Perhaps the entrants would be allowed to fly a custom aircraft, which could be entered as a digital model for the combat flight simulator, if it was a realistic design which could be built and flown, with realistic performance specs in the model. This would greatly accelerate US UCAS related innovation, I think, by developing and building 4 new and cutting edge prototypes of real combat UCAS aircraft every year, for each tournament, built by highly competitive professional combat flight simulator teams in partnership with leading defense contractors. Perhaps there's also a British team, a French team, an Israeli team, German, Swedish, Japanese, South Korean, etc. (limited to allied countries with good information security), which bring their own aircraft to compete with (though this would mean they might have their own national level semi-finals, or something to that effect). There might be another league for flying DCS-style simulations of existing aircraft, digital F-16s vs SU-35s, etc., but obviously, you could not fly real manned aircraft in the finals (unless, of course, they were perfect replicas at 1/4th scale, and built to be remotely piloted, perhaps...), so it would be less interesting for the public to watch, than the real aircraft dogfighting, or in BVR matches, with cutting edge ISR drones recording the whole match, every missile in flight, every aircraft's maneuver, etc.. This ability to fly real drone aircraft in real air to air combat will attract not only the best of supersonic drone pilot talent that can be found in the country, but also huge audiences from all over the world, who could watch online, for free, with occasional advertisements from defense contractors, the Air Force, the Space Force, and various Virtual Reality, Graphics Card, CPU, etc. companies, which would market products that would be popular among the audience. Not to mention, this could help the US recruit exceptionally capable UCAS pilots, help airlines recruit talented commercial and hobbyist pilots, and encourage young people to learn to fly, first on a simulator, then in real life. Flight schools might also make good candidates for potential sponsors of the tournaments, and the software. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Thank you.

You guys are awesome. My daughters grew up watching Thunderbirds and Blue Angels. Now one of them graduated from the Air Force Academy and is heading UPT, the other is still in the Naval Academy hoping to be an naval aviator. Hopefully they could be in the cockpit of a Thunderbird or Blue Angel one day. You guys have done great jobs recruiting for the DoD!!!

I just subscribed recently. I absolutely love your content. I am a civilian pilot, commercially rated. It is not lost on me for a second that you are one of the most badass fighter pilots on earth. Dude, you flew our air superiority fighter, AND you were a Thunderbird pilot?? How many people on earth get to live a life like yours? Like 20? Very impressive. Can't wait to watch all of your videos.

Being a fighter pilot was one of my dreams when I was transitioning between middle school and high school. Sadly I also discovered around that time that I am colorblind and ending that dream. Is it weird that I feel nostalgic for something I never got to experience? either way, I can't wait to see more of these series and experience flying a fighter jet even if its in this alternate way.

Feel you. I realized that I could not be a fighter pilot some years after I got type 1 diabetes when I was 11 years old. Can still feel that it’s a shame even though I’m in my early 30 atm. Like I would be accepted to the pilot program for the Swedish Air Force at my age 🤣😂

2:35 - we thank you for recognizing us, the crew chiefs and maintenance crews who keep fast movers operational. One needs only to walk through the corridors of QMCB and look at the portraits on their various walls to realize air-wing Marines are NEVER recognized nor are even considered. Air-wing Marines are never featured in the portraits on the walls of HQMC. I remember the names of every pilot of every aircraft I ever certified for flight because my CDI/QAR stamp on those documents in the ADB meant those pilots would not have malfunctions with their aircraft because our maintainers worked 17-hour shifts, 7 days a week to keep them operational. Yet, the air-wing is never given credit for our dedication and skill.

Bro, I love this. It paint pilots as human, fallible. It's about checklists and observations an just plain being an Aviator. Hard work and study becomes awareness and professionalism. Grew up watching Thunderbirds almost every summer. To this day, seeing the Thunderbirds let's me know, sure as the Solstice that it's all downhill from here. Love you boys, in your air machines. Keep flying.

@yurackjung9321
@yurackjung9321 2 года назад
I believe the eagles don’t have as much of low altitude performance as the f16s. They were meant to be energy fighters not really a flashy dog fighter like the viper. Also the blue angels prob uses hornets mainly cuz they don’t have other planes but also it has very good high alpha at low speed performance so it can do more flashy stuffs down low and slow so the audience can see. Just my speculation other than the obvious answers like $$$ and etc

This is awesome. Always wanted to be a thunderbird, unfortunately bad eyes ended that dream as a 13 year old. Question, what determines which slot each pilot is in? Is it skill-set or some other determining factor? And I am excluding 1 and 2 as I know those are the leaders of the demo team.

Great video. I've watched the Thunderbirds, the last 2 winters when they've made the trip to El Centro to spend time with the Blue Angels. It's interesting to watch the two teams fly. I'm curious to know, if the 2 seat F16 has different handling characteristics than the single seat F16? During your time with the Thunderbirds did your team spend time with the Blue Angels?
@MaxAfterburnerusa
@MaxAfterburnerusa 2 года назад
It does handle differently! you actually notice the weight difference and it affects acceleration. And yes we did spend time with the Blues! I have a few videos on that and one more on the way!

@@MaxAfterburnerusa must be a bit odd to sit in the backseat of your counterpart from the Blues. One last question. Why do the Thunderbirds fly with masks and the Blue Angels don't? I know you mentioned the microphone differences, but is there some other overriding reason for the difference? I noticed, that when the Thunderbird pilots are in the backseat of the Blue Angels they're maskless, and the Blue Angel pilots are wearing masks when they're in the backseat of the Thunderbirds. Thanks
