My understanding is that there was a helicopter in their path, that's why #1 bugged out.

I've seen several Thunderbirds videos with cockpit comms. The boss's communication is so interesting. The cadence, voice inflections etc... Almost sounds robotic, but also fun. Could you do a video explaining the communication process during flight and why it's like this? Very interesting.

Just watched a podcast with "Mace" Curran and she told the story about what happened. She was in the far left of the formation. According to her, there was either a news or police chopper (she can't specifically remember) that was in their direct flight path/altitude when initiating the turn.

Been a fan of the Thunderbirds since my first show in October of 1973 at KBDL in the F-4E. Seen probably 200 demos and practices since then, although it's been fewer in recent years. The team visits far fewer locations every year than they did when I was younger. So many air bases that used to host shows are closed now. I think that one significant aspect of this type of flying that is totally lost on the general public is the degree of trust that each pilot needs to develop in his/her teammates to allow another human being to fly an airplane three feet away from their own, at very low altitudes, while engaging in aerobatics. I suspect that this trust takes a lot of time to develop, but can be lost in a heartbeat when someone does something abrupt and unexpected, such as the move Boss made in this video. I distinctly remember watching this live and as an experienced observer, I knew instantly that it was Boss who messed up and the others were just reacting to stay alive. I would love to have been a fly on the wall in the debrief afterward, as I've heard that Thunderbird, Blue Angel, Snowbird.....doesn't matter which team.....debriefs can be rather brutal. As I understand it, the rank comes off in those debriefs and I suspect that TB3 and 5 probably gave Brick a serious ration. Doesn't matter that he's their Commander. If he's not smooth 100% of the time, somebody could easily get hurt. Thank you for your service and your contribution to the TB tradition!

@@MaxAfterburnerusa : "probably a new boss" Bizarre words to hear come out of your mouth. It would be understandable if flt ld was a UPT 2nd Lt. And even then, a move like that would put them on the path to getting washed out. For any line plt to do this, let alone certified flt ld, let alone IP, let alone tbd, let alone THUNDERBIRD CMDR, this is absolutely inexcusable. And your video fails to say a single word about corrective action that was taken. The debrief was NOT the end of this incident. It appears that the Ghost of Creech still exerts supreme power over the fraternity. Well, maybe no longer supreme,, because Creech would have destroyed your video the second you indicated that any tbd pilot made any error whatsoever. So, on the bright side, I can be very glad to see that at least some progress has happened since since 82.

@@dahawk8574 The pentagon chooses the boss for both our demo teams. Basic requirements are that the officer selected has had command experience in a squadron from the fleet. So no LT would make the cut. They are usually at the bare minimum a 04 or higher. So for USAF that is a Major; in the Navy that's a LT Commander.
@dahawk8574
@dahawk8574 Год назад
@@fightingfalconfan I'm well aware of what it takes to be a Thunderbird Cmdr. You've apparently missed the point I made in my comment. I was talking about what it took to be a competent flight lead, and how any statement that a boss was new does not hold water when attempting to present that as an excuse. There is a much more basic requirement than what you're referring to. And that's having the SA to NOT do any abrupt rolls into #3. Again, this is one of the most basic things taught to every 2nd Lt during UPT. You're taught to fly a smooth, predictable jet when acting as formation lead. And if you happen to advance four steps up the rank ladder to LtC, this does not mean that the most basic fundamentals of flying formation lead all of a sudden can vaporize into the aether. Btw, The same holds for honoring Bingo Fuel. Back in 2016, the LtC leading his Tbd sqdn decided to blow thru that, and his #6 flamed out on final approach. These two examples are what makes a HORRIBLE flight lead, let alone sqdn cmdr. Now on top of this, we can also talk about your duty when flying as a wingman when your lead has screwed the pooch. #6 had the obligation to BREAK FORMATION when it became clear that he was sucking vapors. And in the video here, after #3 did a maneuver to avoid Lead, the outside wingman did do his duty to avoid hitting #3, but it can also be seen that he OVER-REACTED by breaking formation entirely. A wingie who was vigilant would have seen what Lead did... and then _anticipated_ what #3 was going to do, and would have been able to hang in a much less dramatic fashion than he did. A solid, attentive pilot would have been able to maintain the Delta, in spite of Lead's major screw-up. And on that day back in Colorado Springs, #6 could have been more reserved in his strokings of the afterburner, and might possibly have been able to complete the show, even when his Lead screwed up by not cutting it short.

I'm 85 years old. I've seen lots of air shows, beginning with the Acrojets, grandfathers of the Thunderbirds. That was in the early 1950s, when I was in grade school. Sky Harbor air port in Phoenix had so little traffic, it could shut down. There were two commercial flights each way, each day. When the Thunderbirds began, they began at Luke AFB, west of Phoenix. Before you were born, they had an accident. The team flew fixed on the boss or lead pilot. One day the leader passed out for some reason and flew into the ground. The other three pilots flying in formation and flew into the ground also. The ceased operation for two or three years while they regrouped. I believe they flew F=84s at the tune. They since have moved to Nellis AFB. When the Blue Angels were formed, they trained at naval air station in Goodyear, Arizona. We watched them there until they moved to E Centro, California. We lived in El Centro watched them there for a year. You mentioned photography. I saw they always had a FA-18 flying with them that was not a part of the show. All their performances are taped. I think my wife and I saw three Blue Angers in one year at Salinas, Moffett Field, and El Centro.

I'm an amateur, but serious, photographer, and I love to shoot air shows. I live in Wichita, Kansas and we have a USAF base here, McConnell Air Force Base. I had a wonderful time shooting the Thunderbirds at a McConnell AFB Air Show in 2018 and then just last September 2022 when the Thunderbirds performed again at McConnell. It was a great show, and I came away with some very good shots of them, both in the air and on the ground as they prepared to taxi out to the runway. I also loved that at the end of the show, the Thunderbird pilots lined up on the tarmac in front of their F-16's and saluted the crowd at McConnell. It was a fitting end to an impressive show!

I am absolutely enthralled to listen all these experiences. The biggest positive of aviation is that even mistakes look spectacular unless they turn into totally tragic catastrophe, that itself is a proof how challenging & gruelling it is to fly a jet 500 mph. I heard in an interview once a good fighter pilot will never be someone like " Maverick " from Top Gun because realistically he will kill himself or his crew. What you need is exactly the opposite personality, watching your video gives that statement a seal of approval. Please share more such experiences with us 😊✈

As a former KC-10 pilot, I have respect for you bringing up your hairy situations while refueling. I know most fighter pilots consider AR to be "admin" stuff, and I get that compared to what your real job in the fighter is for. However, it was interesting to hear two of your situations involved AR situations. AR is something that we all take for granted because 99 times out of 100 everything goes as planned and then suddenly something gets your attention real fast. Great video.

Judging from how quickly the Boss leveled the wing and 3 and 5 got out of the way, guessing there was no voice call. Just speculation on my part I guess. I can guess the debrief would have been rather interesting. I have a question. The Blues have that 40 pound spring on the stick and our Snowbirds (Hi from Canada btw) use a lot of nose down trim before a lot of maneuvers......to the Thunderbird F-16s have anything similar to maintain that precise control? Hey Deuce, that was 100% a foxtrot uniform by the Boss. Even if it was a natural reaction to an aircraft in the airspace (as identified by 5, Mace), he totally f'ed up 3 and 6. Nice call out on 3's rudder use! Turns out the Solo that bailed was 6. I was thinking it was 5 because the Solo on the left side of the Delta was wide the whole time. Question: When I was on the team if the Boss called knock it off, the next call was to go to spread formation. Had that SOP changed when you were on the Team? Unfortunately, after three years of helping Loggie and 8 grade at the Springs, as well as training a new Loggie and 8 to grade, I see all the mistakes, and also saw my share of close calls. I also had the misfortune to be in my last few days with the Team when Tom Lewis smacked in...That was a pretty shitty time, but at least he survived.

As high a standard as, especially, the BOSS must be held to, I gotta believe he was SEVERELY reprimanded for making that unexpected right bank. Trust in each other and especially the Boss is everything to be able to fly in such tight formation. We'll never know what conversations transpired post flight, but it wouldn't surprise me if he was replaced. Others bosses and team members have been replaced for safety-of-flight issues (I know it happened with the Blue Angels). If there isn't a first mistake, there won't be a second mistake.

This was all caused by a helicopter, maybe news, maybe civilian. But the 'boss' turned to avoid a helicopter that was in their flight path. right on their alitude. It was't to avoid a false lead in feature, or a new 'boss'.

correct me if I'm wrong but it looked to me as if the plane to his front left flinched right and then back before he broke right. Was this perhaps the first guy sorta prompting the other to break right, sorta like when someone starts to run a red light then stops but the guy next just blows it thinking it was green because of the other guy.

Your too nice to lead. Sure #1 missed his lead in point but abruptly turning right meant he was more concerned about his goof than protecting his buddies. You made a boo boo but like you said the announcer could smooth it over and the audience would never know. # one would know though and being a perfectionist he tried to correct his mistake at the expense of his flight.

I saw the Thunderbirds perform last year. After reviewing my photos, i noticed that the no.5 bird’s number marking was upside down while the other planes’ numbers were in the normal orientation. Any reason for this?
@JanitorIsBack

because that is the solo that does the inverted maneuvers

Ok, i just watched a youtube video of the lead solo and even on the pilot's flight suit the number 5 is upside down. 😃

@@MaxAfterburnerusa oh lol, it's an Office-chair DCS "Pilot" here :D I was referring to moving between various positions around the tanker. For fine left to right adjustments behind the probe/drogue I use mostly rudder instead aileron. So I was wondering what real pilots do or what is technically correct in that situation.

Trying to think what small, civilian airfield in northern Canada you could hit that had a surface that wouldn't frag your F-16, let alone be concrete? Iqaluit has a massive runway and hosts our CF-18 QRA facility up there. It's also where Airbus, etc like to cold weather test their designs. No risk of moose or wildlife there. It's a major facility. Goose Bay - again massive runways. Formally hosted Dutch and German NATO aircraft for low level training. Also I believe an emergency divert for the space shuttle back in the day, so not small either. Nope. Can't think of one. I'm betting Iqaluit, and it just seemed small to you. Only place that has hotels that you could stay in for 7 days and a KC-135 could fly into.

Is there anyway I can get a ride in an F-16? I’ll pay for it. I’m in the Air Force as a crew chief f-16 reservist and I’m a pilot on the outside. I’m trying to commission to fly fighters for my base. Anyway I could fly in a fighter jet at all?

They gotta hold 30 lbs of pressure??? I can't imagine holding a 30 lb dumbbell for an hour flight constantly. Why so much? Like, couldn't 10-15 lbs be enough? That's amazing. But... we all know that's not why your right arm is stronger than your left.... hahahaha
