Exactly this isn't bad but it's barely related to Thundercat why couldn't they have just done something new it would have gotten a lot less hate for it to Yeah cuz of course we're going to be backlash there's already existing fan base into stands this is just a slap in the face Thundercats Roar and She-Ra Princess of Power would have worked a lot better if they were just knew IPs
@Rebecca Mason 1 the original she-ra and cast we're adults 2 its the creators of the new show and the tumbler crowd that are beating it to 16 year-old girls that they specifically made to be that way. 3 the creator of new She-ra acts like she made She-ra progress and diverse when in fact the original show already did that and they refuse to recognize that fact.
It’s the reason they look like this the fluid and wacky animations can appear as they look like. While yes character design could use some improvement a really well designed character moving in wacky animations wouldn’t appear as normal it would be weird which is why many well deep designed characters are stiff most of the time more or less. Either way still very fluid design imo 8.5/10 for me.
There’s a difference between style and animation. The style in, my opinion, is lame. It’s way too simple, makes the characters look much lamer, and it just has the whole bean head style most shows have nowadays. The animation however is absolutely incredible and is really well done. The style has to be the first thing many people think of when it comes to the “cal arts style” including me I just don’t like calling it that because it’s just insulting a school for no reason.
I think it's funny, okay the design could've been better but I do so love the action, the slapstick and one-liners. The original will always be amazing, but just because I'm a fan doesn't mean I can't poke fun at it :)
I lean towards agreeing, but it seems like a deeper problem, in that the characters don't act like themselves as we know them from the original, and the style just adds to that. Same reason the overly-realistic earlier reboot felt so off. If only they could have taken the seriousness and attention to lore from the earlier one and put this level of heart and effort into the action, while keeping the cast in-character.
You know, I am surprised to find comments, that actually like the show. I am glad, not everyone hates it. The show didn't deserve the hate it gotten. It really didn't.
True, plus I usually thought the VAs like Max Mittelman and Patrick Seitz were the fun part about this show imo too since I also know them in other voice roles too lol.
This show could have honestly worked if it wasn’t trying to be a “Thundercats Reboot,” but instead its own thing. The character designs and the comedy go super well together.
@@deadpoolinthehouse I've only seen one episode so far. It was about a news anchor that mutated into a snail or something and wanting revenge on the Turtles. The group seemed more or less the same personality-wise and the humor didn't really do anything for me. I'm not going to say it's a bad show, but it certainly wasn't good enough for me to want to watch more.
@@deadpoolinthehouse the design isn't that bad. They've made it simple for the animators to drsw so that they can create dynamic and very fluid fight scenes. I would love to see the animators of thunder cats roar to show more of their top notch animation with newer action base shows.
I don't wanna be mean but the OG design's are confusing to me like I get they're supposed to be like cat people but there too humanoid. I actually thought panthro was a goblin in both versions
Of course, if you never watched ThunderCats from the 80s, 2011 ThunderCats and never read comic books related to them, there's a 70% of chances that you might like this show.
i think the designs in the show get way too much flak, they're extremely simplistic and cartoony compared to other thundercats shows but that's the exact reason why they're able to pull off animation like this. i get if it's just not to your tastes but some people really try to blow it way out of proportion like it looks like this out of "laziness" when i can assure you, nothing about animation is lazy
@@PaintraSeaPea fair, but i still think they simplify it a bit too much if the target is to get this level of animation, couldve done it with just a slightly better proportion, just a smidge.
@@biowbe4522 sure, but at that point it more boils down to personal taste i'd say. like i said, i get if it's not your thing, but i feel like the cutesy factor of the characters fits the tone theyre going for in this particular show. sure they could have done it differently but i dont really see any obligation to do so, its a pretty subjective matter
@@biowbe4522 The style matches the tone. We are talking about art here, "better" is subjective. As someone who has actually studied art and animation a great deal. "Effort" is not the issue here. I watched this show in a vacuum. I was blown away by the quality of the animation. I finished it and started reading about it and HOLY SHIT everyone hated it so much. A big part of it is people just not knowing shit about animation. The stripped down rubbery style is in service to what they were trying to achieve. The show was made by animators. Not written by writers then animated by animators. The entire thing start to finish was made by the people who were going to be drawing it. I fear the skill level on display in this show is beyond most peoples understanding. There are animation jokes in there. Loads of them. Not WHAT they are animating is funny. But HOW they are animating it. The style and delivery is the joke. I don't really know how to explain it and cant think of a particular example. But you can tell they were having alot of fun with it. Most people don't take animation very seriously or possess much knowledge about it. They are just these dumb things for kids and immature adults. But yea. I think ThunderCats Roar is so good it just goes over peoples heads. Its so well made it confuses and enrages people who don't understand it.
I'm rewatching this and getting angry it had such pre-loaded backlash and was hidden by the studio because the animation techniques being used here are so rare for television. We got consistent character models with the squash and stretch *AND* camera movements following the action in almost every shot of the action scenes. In spite of its loose style there's incredibly consistent spacial awareness.
I honestly really liked this show. Better then Teen Titans GO in pretty much every aspect. Not super crazy about the character designs but the animation and comedy was amazing and fun. This is an action comedy show done right. Heck, it even had bits of character development too despite it not being a serialized show
You know back then when they just announced this I was overly skeptical about it, but after watching some episodes now I think the change of direction actually quite fits it. The animation is fluid and sometimes is plain gorgeous even though the characters can look too sketchy. And the light-hearted comedic tone isn't as bad as I expected. In the end it became my personal prime example of that one infamous saying (you know, 'Don't judge a book by its cover').
after remembering how the 2011 thundercats was recieved and know how Transformers Animated was recieved, I decided to hold my judgement until the show actually show its first episode. not bad, WAY better than Ben 10.
the most funny thing about this whole drama about the reboot it's the fact that old fans remember the original as a more "serious" animation. But It was really goof and very silly(sometimes boring), the only "serious" aspect were the trace of the characthers.
*sigh There is clearly so much love put into this animation. You do not see these types of dynamic rotating camera's in budget animation, because it's so freakin technical, expensive and DIFFICULT. But the show pulls them off so beautifully. It's a real shame the reception the show got for it's art style. I think the art style really fun and full of life.
It would of been fine if it was a new cartoon with this style but this is so different from the original thundercats it just feels like it's a parody of it. I feel like they tried to do another teen Titans go move but the og thundercats was a more serious tone but with Teen Titans they did joke around and break the 4th wall so GO doesn't stray too far.
This show is excessively different to the og Thundercats, couldn't they just make a totally different series with that character personalities? Did it really have to be related to Thundercats? If the series had other characters acting in the same way, it wouldn't have been hated that much
I feel the same way. Had he created a new series inspired by his "love" for Thundercats, a clone like the many ones in the TMNT era, it would have had a better reception.
@@jasonirizarry3123 They did that with the 2011 version. All three are allowed to be good. TCR isn't trying to replace or one up the original. It IS an homage. I studied animation and have seen all three series. The skill on display in Thundercats Roar is pretty wild. The action scenes are where it shines the most in my eyes. And its not made by any one person, its a collaborative work. The original and the 2011 were cash grabs more than Thundercats roar. The original literally formulated to sell toys. Shipped overseas to be animated for too little money by people who have no interest in it. Animated by people who never even got to watch it! It was never released in japan! But people speak of it like its this precious amazing passion project by those who made it. But it truly wasn't. There is Love, passion, and skill for days in ThunderCats Roar but people are choosing not to see it. Its super sad. It truly hurts my soul to see that level of skill so thoughtlessly pushed to the ground and torn apart. Its not just "some cartoon". They almost never are. Its the product of a multi year collaborative art project created by teams of skilled and educated people. And people just dismiss it at a glance; and even worse publicly mock it and the people who made it. That is a gross side of humanity.
@@parsleyisthicc *sighs* thats just an opinion. Not much of a critique either. The style is in service to they type of animation they were going for. They are strong character designs that pair so perfectly with the over the top bombastic action style. I think it looks great. The writing is my biggest complaint. From an animation standpoint its REALLY strong. But it was written by animators so I see a lot of area for improvement there. But the vocal performances are really good. Liono, mummra, panthro, jaga, the mutants. All very very strong vocal performances. The jaga in this version is the voice of the original liono, and the king from the 2011 show. This performance in thundercats roar is really fun and silly. Now hes been in all three versions. super cool. It REALLY doesn't look horrible. Pretty much any animator would agree its a well animated show. One example of that is "Butch Hartman" of fairly odd parents. He took a brief look at it over on his channel before it came out. Its not trying to be "COOL" like the other too series. And its not simply trying to be silly like Teen Titans Go. Thunder Cats roar is a story board and animation driven show. The action is where It shines the most. The rubbery style and extreme use of exaggerated movement is all in service to telling impossible stories and having character do impossible things. The showdown of Pantro vs Vultureman at end of episode "Panthro Plagiarized" Is one of my favorites and really showcaces the style very well. You couldn't really have a fight like that in either of the other two. Its WAY over the top. Beautifully animated. Very fun. People talk about the 2011 one like its so amazing. Its fine. But its really not all that great. Its clunky as hell and the action never really tries to impress. Is mainly just cool looking characters and heavy handed story telling. Some of the action scenes are almost laughable in how slow and clunky the action is considering how much they build up the events. At the end of the two part episode "Trials of Lion-O: Episode 2" The thundercats reunite to assault mumm ra and free all the enlsaved animal races of the galaxy or what ever. But the actual ACTION SCENE is so slow and clunky. The whole thing is over in no time. It really nothing special. Its just animators animating the story boards the way they were provided. The original series has the best theme song and title sequence. Really strong animation even today. The people that animated the titles went on to be some of the best in the industry. But the rest of the show is just kind of meh, the action never lives up to the title sequence. But that was never the goal. Its a product of its time. Its fine and interesting to look at and see how it effected the industry.
The designs really still bother me a lot and I'm usually very open-minded about this stuff but I can appreciate the animation at points. The characterization?...Never watched the original so...not sure. But the character dialogue? Definitely too loud and consistent. It's like they always have to talk.
Entidade 302 I think O.K. K.O.! had it’s own charm and value. Since this Thundercats is a “reboot” I’m assuming that people judge not just by the show’s own value, but also the values and comparisons to the original. Just like with Teen Titans Go!, the show will suffer some impact because it’s not a “new story or plot” like the originals and instead just a “fart gag” type of cartoon. I do admit, however, that I really like the animation for this show! The animators are doing great!
9:50 Lion-O was great with his “ANNNNNND WE WIN!!” as the Thundercats managed to separate Mumm-Ra from the Sword of Plun-Darr on top of the remixed OG Thundercats opening!
I love how it looks like it came out of someone's notebook from freshman year of highschool when they're just getting started making their own style and fanart.
@@mojo7798 indeed. I hope they dont do something like this to rwby. A fate not deserved on any show. Teen Titans go was only praised by people who wanted a different opinion and wanted to be seen as more nuanced
@@fernandosegovia8806 theyre like "oh it contrasts it. The original was a serious show and now its a comedy" so what? Doesnt make it good. Its garbage comedy. They had a 30 second clip of them just farting at someone
@@Natendo_Switch I've seen no praise at all. On a positive note, people just forgot about them rather than keeping trashing them. 2011 Reboot is the one making a buzz.
I've seen people praising the show in the comments of this video, although that of course may not reflect the overall opinions of the show as is. I haven't even seen any of ThunderCats Roar up until this video showed up in my feed. XD@@cristhianmlr
Plus even as it feels, ThunderCats Roar does try to pay respect to the original product besides trying to obviously be more of a comedy-adventure series
Crazy as this show can get, I do dig some ideas, like Cat's Lair as Thunder King Battle Lord to deal with Mumm-Ra after he's gotten so much bigger thanks to the power of the Sword of Plun-Darr.
I liked the part where the wavefront from the sword uncovered that giant lizard. It's such a thoughtful non-sequitor that it got me giggling like mad. I'm still smiling!
Bro heck no don't give this show any props. You know good and we'll it doesn't come near close to the perfect good top notch 2011 Thunder Cat's reboot!
Although I will remain a fan of the original and remake Thundercats, I’ll give Roar some credit the animation is growing on me, plus it reminds me of the animation styles of OK KO, so I’ll give it a fair chance
@@candycover true like it was worse when ttg crossover happened, but this takes the cake, cause the sword is ancient weapon only passed down from warrior to warrior
Unappealing character designs really can ruin a show. Why should I care what happens to these guys when I have the previous incarnations to be invested in?
And Max Mittelman showing he can do a more serious take on Lion-O when the situation in the show calls for it, like here when he was trying to call the Sword of Omens back to him after Lion-S broke Third Earth's orbit when she got it from him
Thudercats Roar may not be like the original show but at least this series is more comedy/funny version of the Thundercats which means the series is not dark or serious like the original and second series from 2011. The characters drawing design are rubbish though and not like the original but who cares. As long as there's a next Thundercats series then that's fine by me beside we'll just have give some of the up coming episodes a chance and hopefully won't be cancel like they did with the Thundercats 2011. I did watch some of the up coming episodes and even thought the character's personalities are different but they are hilarious in their own way like Mumm-Ra for example, his drawing design and characters aren't like the original but he is really funny, stupid ,hilarious and more of a comedy type villian.👍
You do know the point of the show was to defeat mumm ra besides how are the other ones scary I like it but it is still bad besides what is bad about 2011 it is incredible and also I agree it is very comedic but I'm thinking of not calling or threading it like the original thundercats so I will treat it like a different one but I'm not calling it thundercats besides you no what this has changed my mind so yeah I'm moving on I'm not holding on to my past but going forwards into the present
The comedic tone is precisely the reason some people dislike it. They think the Thundercats setting doesn't lend itself well to comedy, so trying to make it comedic is absurd.
the animation is great. I watched it in a vaccuum. it made me sad when i learned it is so hated. The animation is objectively very well done. Disney himself would approve i guarantee it. dripping with style. not lazy, crazy perspective shifts with constant bombast. Fun visual gags. I really liked the sword of omens changing size all the time. The visual style is reminiscent of the over all tone they were going for. It doesnt take itself too seriously. The use of music was DOPE. I loved the ending theme.
I had an idea for a thundercats reimagining where lion-o is only like 2-3 years older than wilykit or wilycat. The rest of the thundercats are adults, lion o’s ark revolves around him being forced to grow up faster to be the new lord of the thundercats. Also there are a couple hundred other survivor thunderans all living in a village next to cat’s head as refugees. The thundercats are basically just a group of warriors protecting the new settlement on post apocalyptic earth.
This is so stupid, but it makes me laugh, and it's avoid the truly off-putting bizarrness of remakes like Titan's Go...at least, so far. Haven't actually seen the series yet, but I think I'm gonna.
@@KezzDaddy Thanks for making this compilation. Gave me that final push to finally watch all the episodes instead of watching random eps. on TV. I REALLY REALLY ENJOYED IT
This show had so much hate leveled at it and I don’t understand. It is one of my favorite toons since Over the Garden Wall. Voice acting top tier. Animation top shelf. The action blows my mind. The morals of the stories are generally simple but handled well. This show makes me happy in a way that I can’t describe except to say it gives me the total nostalgia for Saturday mornings with a large bowl of cereal. And the art? Simplicity is often the most elegant, this show pushed me to get back into drawing. Thanks Thundercats Roar. I hope the toxic fans didn’t win.
This show is actually pretty good It's funny, and the animation is incredible (the character designs may not be great, but original sorta, kinda looked... Creepy, at times. And the animation DEFINITELY makes up for the designs)
Say what you will about the show but you cannot bash the animation This show feels like those slice of life animes that just all of a sudden have a killer action scene with animation that absolutely destroys the animation of actual Combat anime
I didn’t watch any of it yet and I already love how it looks. I just wished that in the crosser over with TTG they didn’t try to disregarded any negative criticism by having one of the og characters say shit like “And their poopy opinions suck” or something along those lines
Hey, if it helps at all, Roar barely had anything to do with that episode. The writers of TTG wrote the entire plot, INCLUDING (I'm pretty sure,) the scene with OG Lion-O
@@nvavii1051 Doesn't help at all The Roar writers should have put their foot down and said that wasn't cool. Insulting and alienating the fans of the franchise doesn't do your show any favors if you're trying to get people to give it a chance.
@@Drums_of_Liberation The TTG showrunners probably thought they were helping out since their own Thundercats reboot in 2011 also wasn't at well-accepted at first but then cancelled when it had many fans just like Roar.
I can understand why a lot of people hate this version of The Thundercats. The 1980s and 2011 Thundercats, had good stories with action. And this is what people want to see. But on this version, the ThunderCats were not acting funny . they were acting stupid.
The 2011 one had tons of effort. That is clear. But without any form of agency. The characters had little to no purpose in the story. That’s why it failed.
Y'know, dipsite everything bad being said about this show..?? I usually thought the VAs were the fun part about this since I know some VA's in this show such as Max Mittleman,Patrick Seitz,Erica Lindbeck, and of course Trevor Devall too since I also know him as the 2nd voice of Dukey from Johnny Test and Scourge from Transformers: Cybertron a.k.a. Flame Convoy from Galaxy Force lol.
I’m confused abt your stance on this. Most of these comments are appreciative of the animation despite their feelings towards the series itself. If you can’t put your stubborn desire to hate aside because praise towards this series of any kind bothers you so much, maybe it’s best for you to leave.
I've never seen any iteration of thundercats so i have no real stake in this. Other than hating the character designs ever since reveal. They are just not appealing at all lol. The animation is very nicely done but the silliness of it just doesn't keep me invested. Silly faces, silly dialogue, etc. It feels like it's for really little kids, but if they enjoy it that's fine.
You know what the sad part is? I would legit watch this and probably enjoy this if it was its own show and didn't carried the ThunderCats name. The action scenes are well animated, but the art style and the overly comedic have nothing to do with ThunderCats. With that said, I'm glad this shit was cancelled, and I hope people take this as a lesson to NOT try to half-ass a revival of beloved classic franchises (ah, who am I kidding, they totally will do that again, won't they? I'm sorry, Scooby-Doo fans, I feel your pain...)
I don't get why people hate it when cartoon network makes comedy shows out of already good shows. Examples: Teen Titans Go, Powerpuff Girls(Although I admit that one had a couple of issues), This show here.
@@KezzDaddy yeah had a feeling. Super excited for the second half of the season, pondering a new video to do before it comes back, not sure what. I'm so glad that the show ended up being fun.
You guys actually like this show? It's an insult they made this you should watch the original TC a real kids show with excitement rivals to marvel and DC movies in its own right.
KezzDaddy I wonder how Roar would handle Lynx-O, Bengali, and Pumyra as well as the Lunattaks. I mean, we’ve seen plenty of classic ThunderCats char gets show up so why not more? I’d also like to see if Roar could adapt 2011 ThunderCats characters into the mix
