Fun Facts: The "reboot" is actually a sequel. What we are seeing in this show, is what Third Earth looks like generations after the original 80s show. I'm keeping it a bit vague, because the 2011 show delves into the lore on this topic. The 2011 show also features a brief cameo by a Tiger Sharks character; which finally establishes an on-screen connection between the franchises.
That would make sense in terms of the Third Earth/Thundera location. But not so much in terms of the characters. So I’ll be interested to see how it turns out. (To ultimately never get resolved since the show was canceled.)
@@PugMugsly Yeah, I was honestly surprised at how ambitious this show was. Hard to talk about without spoilers. The real-life backstory to how this show failed, the timing, corporate backstabbing, Lego, etc etc. -is fascinating. I truly think this show would have done better, had it been released in today's streaming world, or even a few years earlier on the same network. ThunderCats 2011 & Firefly fans know a special pain.
I really loved the reboot. Hate it had to end so soon, but loved so much about it. Tygra and Lion-O being brothers was a welcome change for me, offered some extra development and connection
I would've loved to have a continuation of this then have to deal with that Thundercats Roar Garbage. This show was so criminally underrated and had so much potential to succeed the original series. It could've been the next avatar. With it's medieval ecstatic, fascinating world building, character building and lore. Having Liono be a teenager then a child in a grown man's body is a welcome change as it avoids some creepy implications. Liono and Tygra being brothers is also a welcome change as it deepens the bond between the characters. And it set the basis for their rivalry and creates a fun big brother and little brother dynamic.
I love the 1985 original, and it will always be my number one favorite. But I think the 2011 series had a lot of potential and shouldn't have been canceled. Let's just never talk about Thundercats Roar.
And Tigra can go invisible, y'know, like Tigers do! 😄 Aw, when you said that, I was hoping you'd make the joke, and then when I went to _type this,_ I think I figured it out - it's a nod to their stripes being used for camouflage in savannah-type areas, right? Like, browner places with lots of reeds/tall grass? They can blend into that stuff, like going invisible, sort of? Anyway, awesome video! Except for the lack of Thundercats tees - _for shame._ lol. I like the idea of this "FIRST EPISODES" as a series, and it is cool to see just how strong both pilots were in terms of world-building and establishing everything including personalities and character dynamics. I wish most reboots nowadays were half as thoughtful as Thundercats '11. It really sucks how that reboot got, like, _no_ chances from Cartoon Network. This was the era where they started and almost immediately stopped their DC Nation block too, and killed off Star Wars: The Clone Wars, whatever version of Ben 10 was up at the time, Generator Rex, etc. Just, literally, all their action cartoons. They pivoted exclusively to comedic shows following the success of Adventure Time and claimed that action shows just didn't sell enough merch, which begs the question - or QUESTIONS, because I have more than one - did they even try to sell merchandise? Barely for Thundercats (honestly, until I saw Secret Galaxy's video on Thundercats 2011, I never saw any commercials for the action figures Bandai produced), and not at all for some of the other cartoons (as far as I know, the Green Lantern and Beware the Batman 'toons didn't get any, for instance). Conversely, did Adventure Time or any of the other strictly-comedic shows move that much merch, because I don't recall seeing kids wearing, like, backpacks and stuff. I've heard for years that Teen Titans Go is their most popular show on Cartoon Network, but KNOW there is no merch for that (or at least, I Googled it and don't get any hits back). All these kids networks just lost their minds; why would you spend that much to produce a quality show and then just let it die? It was a bad time for action cartoons in general. Nickelodeon was doing their best to kill off Legend of Korra by pulling episodes randomly and moving it all around the schedule to crater ratings. A lot of petty, bad decisions made by a lot of deeply stupid executives. The reboot *IS* really strong, with all the creative decisions made to "ground it" a bit more from the more obviously sci-fantasy 80's version generally working very well. So it sucks that the Thundercats'll probably never be seen again... unless Adam Wingard gets to make his Thundercats movie after Godzilla X Kong; The New Empire, like he said he wants to. But even though, I doubt they'll be successful enough to lead to a _Silverhawks_ reboot, which is what I personally would want to see. Then again, we don't really do "action cartoons that sell toys" anymore - that demographic moved pretty solidly onto just playing video games in the '90s and 200s when it came to consuming action media. Kids in the '80s watched GI Joe; kids now play Call of Duty, y'know? IMO, WB _Interactive_ should just make a good, original Thundercats _video game_ - or at least, sneak a guest character into, like, Mortal Kombat or something, lol. Have Panthro rip a dude in half.... or, for a friendship move, let them snuggle with Snarf I guess, lol. Reboot-Snarf was _very_ cute. Anyway, I've rambled enough. TL;DR - great video and great look at these two pilots! And your unconditional love of reboot Snarf is totally understandable!
Another comment mentioned that the 2011 ThunderTank toy came with a Snarf figure… which is such a weird choice. You think they’d sell Panthro with the ThunderTank and make, like, a Snarf plush. The marketing and merchandising decisions around this show were odd and didn’t do it any favors!
The first 2 episodes is from the Lion King movie. The sword is way weaker than the original. He only uses the sword signal once. The show got a lil interesting towards the end. I prefer the original.
What immediately popped into my head was the 2011 show was dyszootopia, as in a dystopic version of Zootopia. Strongly agree on Science Fantasy as well. That gets you Star Wars and so much more. So many possibilities. My favorite is the setting of an RPG called Shadowrun, which I've actually never played. In that world, magic returned after the Mayan Apocalypse, and now magic coexists with cyberpunk. So you've got katana wielding street samurai (a very late 80s early 90s cyberpunk character type) teaming up with spelling casting mages in a world with dragons, orcs, elves, dwarves, and all that. You've got people hacking into computer systems and people doing astral projection. We need more of that kind of thing.
I've got completely into this franchise recently after done marathoning bunch of shows, at the time I recalled watching all of the sadly cancelled 2011 version and loved it way more than the 30 episodes I saw of 80s version. While watching all 3 versions of this franchise I've started to see more good things about the original 80s show the 80s show was a growth n rise up story of Lion-O becoming a leader with his crew, even snarf which I feel sorry gets so much fan hate he does start of as being annoying with his over worrying attitude, he's cowardly but honestly thinking about it... if most people were in hostile locations I do believe they would be cowardly n some can be a bit clumsy but overall they'll do their best heck in later episodes snarf and even snarfer just suck it up and just get to work and do their best to help fight off the mutants even tho they're not strong creatures, to me it's bravery and overcoming your fears while still doing team work which is why I like snarf and the thundercats team which is what the show demonstrates alot in the series which I don't see youtube reviewers talk about when it comes to this show. I personally enjoy the sadly cancelled 2011 version, Alot of the enviroments are beautiful, unique scifi locations and even some cool creepy locations to, characters and the complex corrupt stories. As for Roar, yeah the show is pretty bad but i've seen far much worse, it should'nt have existed since the creators were doing an alternate take on the 80s story but alot of parts of it even as a comedy wasn't written well also this was the time everyone was sick and tired of calarts n just fast paced comedy style cartoons of the time. but I did enjoy some episodes of the show but it does make me wish that the creators did this as a spin off comic which wouldn't get so much hate because not that many people read comics compared to those who watch media shows/movies, then continue the 2011 version or maybe start a movie. Everyone even myself was very frustrated that the awesome 2011 version was cancelled and the fanbase got nothing but what we got in Roar so yeah I do agree that they have every right to be angry. To me the best characters in all 3 versions of the franchise for me is the villains, and i've always liked Cheetahra and Panthro in all version, I make compilations of villains and side characters alot also cheetahra is just cool action giga chad lady and panthro is such a handsome hunk of a man, heck even mumm-ra (transformed) and the mutants are hunky bad guys. Mmm mmm mmm I love me some buff bad bois and I do love me some slapstick bad bois to so they made Roar tolerable for me hahahha (please don't hate me for it I just love goofy villains in some shows and I love vile villains in others) I started marathoning this whole franchise 3 times in a row since early 2024 and I love this franchise and I hope something new and cool comes out. Heck I've heard the director of Godzilla vs King Kong series is going to bring back Thundercats as a movie which I hope goes perfectly well. I've got a bunch of figures when my room is already full of figures and plushies but I think I can squeeze in some more, I have half of the mutants and thundercats but not all of them yet but I will later.
You’d think the Thundertank would come with Panthro! If I could have found a 2011 Snarf t-shirt or plush, I would have IMMEDIATELY forked over some cash.
Another great video! Snarf! Snarf! I loved Thundercats (original) as a kid. Its disappointing that the theme song in the reboot wasn’t as kick ass the original. I’m still not sure how lion-o was the only one to age.
if there's one thing the 80s knew how to do, it was theme songs. then 90s sitcoms ruined theme songs forever. edit: and then Star Trek: Enterprise buried theme songs and paved over the grave.
To be fair, early-to-mid 90s cartoons also had some pretty classic theme songs. (And whenever I think of 90s sitcom intros, I think of "Too Many Cooks" from Adult Swim.)
@@PugMugsly I think of the 80s for theme songs because of Knight Rider, The A Team, Magnum PI, Simon and Simon, The Dukes of Hazard, etc. (and Airwolf, how could I forget Airwolf?) ...but really, upon reflection, peak theme song may have happened earlier with Hawaii Five-O
@@that44rdv4rk The only relatively modern show I can think of (though I'm sure there are others) that had fun with its theme song was Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. But mostly now, it's just title cards. :(
Noticed you have some toys in the background. Are you aware of Thundercat's Ultimates from Super 7. So far 6 waves have been released for adult collectors!🐯🐅🐾👍
I only watched the first few episodes of the reboot around the time they aired so I don't remember much. I don't really like the original tho, honestly. It was a bit before my time and having grown up with shows like Batman: The Animated Series, X-Men, and Gargoyles it just kind of seemed like a step back to me when I finally got a chance to see it. I feel the same way about He-Man and She-Ra. But I am fond of the 2002 version of He-Man. I've not seen any of the Netflix stuff yet. How do you feel about the 2002 He-Man? Did you watch it? I also just wanted to say I've been watching some of your older videos and I really dig your channel. You're super funny and I appreciate that you have an intelligent and insightful sense of humor. It's fun to hear your thoughts and why you feel the way you do. I plan on watching the rest over the next how ever long so I'm sure I'll have thoughts on some of those too, but I just wanted to say keep up the good work and I'm amazed this channel isn't a lot bigger but I have recommended it and will continue doing so. It really is a hidden gem
I didn’t watch the 2002 He-Man (or the more recent She-Ra Netflix reboot), but I did watch the more recent Masters of the Universe: Revelation, and I generally liked it! And thank you!!! 😄
It really didn't take that long into this to see exactly where it was going; It's ok Pug, you don't need to make a Comparison video to justify why you're almost certainly going to watch all of a decade old reboot of a series about combat cats. I look forward to hearing about the series ending, unanswered cliffhanger. Perhaps the, errr... Thundarians (?) say; "A Computer did it" rather than a Wizard.
Cool vid! I actually want to watch Thundercats now. I'm a total lore-whore and I had no clue the shows had an interesting blend of scifi and fantasy. Anthromorphic cats and the people who love them always kinda weirded me out, tbh.
Troz! Poit! I wonder what it is about that sound that it gets used in comics and cartoons. Wikipedia has three other characters with this name. P.S. Bon voyage
@Pug Mugsly Yeah there's so much out there to watch. Just be sure to avoid the live action Last Airbender movie. It's garbage and not in so bad its funny way.
