In the original release of the movie at his second visit to the counseling booth (?) the recording goes "could you be more,..specific?" and THX barfs up. It's classic.
I have a original copy of this great movie on laserdisc. Crazy but this is probably my favorite movie ever made. I have tried to show friends over the years this movie and some get it and some just can't do it. They will go, nope i can't watch anymore and want to leave 😆
I actually like this version more then the one where he throws up, just because the shot of the lizard living in the maze of wires, giving you the feeling that even the God he is talking to has no humanity.
errr...gives you the feeling? like. perhaps you get a "notion" that this OMM isn't really helping anything?....this pre-recorded image and voice that THX listens to never had any humanity in the first place. hehe....."giving you the feeling". hehe. you're a funny guy.
Hey, a great Lucas film before Ewoks and Jar Jar screwed them up with "comic relief". One of the best things he and Murch ever did. Also a film worth studying for those into film and film history or even contemplating making their own films. Kudos to Mr. Lucas and the cast and crew.
To placate the confessor is surely one of the reasons for the booths. But it also a total surveillance society. People would confess things there that they may never touch upon in converation outside the booth. One cutaway shot shows a tape recorder and there is also a part where what THX has said is being run through a stress analyzer. I think it would be inconsistent if this weren't another means of spying.
"Let us be thankful we have an occupation to fill. Work hard, increase production, prevent accidents and be happy." Translation: Be grateful for your crappy, low-paying job. Now get back to work and put a smile on your face. We are living in THX's world _right now_.
With all of the surveillance in this society and recording of conversations I get the impression these confessionals are meant to placate the confessor and not necessarily spy on them further that seems inconsistent.
That machine totally blew him off. Gah, I haven't seen this movie since I was about 8 years old. Is this the one where they have the jewels in their hands?
Very true...I even think the re-released version is better. The new addition of FX is really well done. It does not look visually out of place, and, in certain scenes, adds to the anxiety Robert Duvalls' character feels.
Yes..it is not a title that I would throw out there to friends or acquaintances wanting a feel-good throwaway flick to watch. It is one I recommend to those who want a weird, cerebral film to view.
AND?!? ... you're too clever, lol! it's been so long since I've seen this movie; great movie! Lots of little ideas that can go unnoticed the first several times you watch; a movie every college student should watch and then write a paper and then attend open discussion.
I remember seeing this scene in the original version about 30 years ago and it was different. e.g. The voice says can you be more specific and THX 1138 throws up. Shame that they edited that part out as it was very funny cause you can hardly be more specific than that.
This is a wonderful moment. But I still prefer the original "simple" lizard without all the cgi accoutrements. George will never learn that sometimes less is more. ^_^
@scrambuild yeahh i think the version i saw made use of fx and i thought it worked brilliantly, i love the star wars films but i love distopian sci-fi even more, lucas killed it off with this one! awesome
I have a dvd copy with commentary by Lucas. He points out that, "the lizard in the wires is basically a thematic device" and goes on to say that it represents THX. A living thing in the middle of a less alive place.
what the computer jesus voice says at the ending about working hard being productive sounds to wierdly like the video tape stuff propganda they have at my job.makes you think....maybe this future is just about here. scary.we'll know when we start getting three letter names with numbers.
And when he says "Let us be thankful we have an occupation to fill." Sounds similar to what the powers that be (in both government and business) say about the current underemployment/unemployment situation. Our jobs don't pay nearly as well as they used to (especially when big business takes more in profits and government takes more in taxes) but we should be thankful we at least have jobs. Ugh.
"......And be Happy!" It estranges me that the 1984 novell gets more attention in the swedish public than Brave New world. But this movie is an amalgam of the two branching out from 'WE'. Nevertheless 'LEAN PRODUCTION' Has the same religious formula 'for the masses.. By the Masses.. Thou art.. Etc etc..."
You would think that after 300 years, they would be able to come up with something more advanced than magnetic tape. "My time.....is yours. Buy. Buy more, now. And...... be happy".
I'd hope to see the original film on Blu-Ray without any of the added CGI gimmicks that are in all the home video versions from 2004 onwards (a.k.a. the Director's Cut version). Lucas already blew it with the original Star Wars trilogy by adding that nonsense post-CGI, and he nearly did the same error with this film, luckily the manipulations aren't that heavy in this film. There are a few scenes so blatantly CGI-manipulated that I'd prefer the "crude" originals instead. Apart from those few distracting scenes in the DC version, the film is overall highly recommended to anyone with an open mind.
MasterJediDude Well now you can watch our country spiral downwards at breakneck speed thanks to the inept and incompetent Donald Drumpf and his band of misguided misfits. The picture on the wall will be Donald's.
