Tie a loop to the end of your fly line - Quick and easy!

This is just a fairly easy knot to learn for tying a loop onto the end of your fly line. The knot requires no tools to tie and the only requirement is a pair of scissors or snips to cut off the tag ends. I also demonstrate a very quick and easy loop knot for your leader at the end.

In regards to the second half of the video (leader loop to line loop) you attach the leader to the loop by putting the tag end of the leader through the leader loop. My experience is that the line is straighter if you put the line loop through the leader loop and then the leader tag through the line loop. This forms a square knot and the line to leader connection is straight, as compared to a hinge type knot. Rio's videos as well as other video's I've seen as well as fly shops advice suggest this way to attach leaders.
@clivenewton7609
@clivenewton7609 4 года назад
Al Hunter , Mad River outfitters also say the “right way” is to put the line loop through the leader loop as the formed hinge knot formed could cut through the leader. That said how many times as that actually happened?! I’m a noobie at fly fishing so absolutely lack any experience or real knowledge, but like many things in the sport of fly fishing and life in general, one mans meat is another mans poison!! The line first seems to work for me!
@jamescooper2618
@jamescooper2618 2 года назад
@@clivenewton7609 The correct way is "Line through leader, then leader through line". That forms a straight even "Handshake Knot" or loop to loop knot.

Good tutorial. Almost looks a bit like a uni knot type connection. I’m not a fan of braided loops myself especially when fishing dries so when my welded loop runs its course I tend to use a nail knot with a 4” length of 15-20lb mono onto my line and simply tie a perfection loop at the end of that, thus creating a perfection loop to perfection loop connection. Any thoughts on that method? I used to tie a straight nail knot to my line but changing leaders so frequently unfortunately causes a loss of an inch or more each time to my lines, not exactly conservative for the fly line when using a WF line.
@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 6 лет назад
The perfection loop to perfection loop connection is fine, but I think my method is much easier and quicker. :-)

Fantastic knot and demonstration! Could the same knot be used to add a loop of 20 or 30 lb Dacron backing to the back end of my fly line? Many of my reels are rigged with loops in my backing to make changing fly lines easier but not every fly line I have has a nice welded loop.
@RussellPlatten

@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 7 лет назад
+Carlos Dingevan Hello Carlos. Tie the knot loosely and then work the knot backwards starting at the loop. So push the loop back into the knot until it is roughly the length you want and then work the slack back through the knot. It is very difficult to explain what I mean, but very easy to do if the knot is loose. I hope this helps.

Hey bud, I tried this with 16# fluro on an intermediate cold water running line and it literally stripped the clear top goat off the inside core during a shock test I perform on all of my finished knots. Did I do something wrong or is this not for all types of lines?
@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 6 лет назад
I am not sure what you mean. If the line the knot was attached to failed the knot must have held? A shock test will always fail at the weakest point. It may be that the knot needed to be a little tighter on the line so as to apply more friction on the core.

@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 5 лет назад
No Stuart, I haven't. :-)
@gesangmanggala9966
@gesangmanggala9966 5 лет назад
I did. Lost a fish because of that. So now I strip the coating off before making this loop, leaving 3 cm of exposed braided core at the end. I then knot the core to make a small bulge right at where it is exposed to prevent the loop knot from slipping off. To finish it off, I cover it with shrink tube. Note: I use a cheap fly line (less than US$ 10), so maybe that's why the coating got off.

What you are using to create your loop is basically a variation of the UNI KNOT and you can use that same uni knot principle to tie the fluorocarbon to the fly line directly without using the loop.
@RussellPlatten
@RussellPlatten 6 лет назад
Yes, the same knot without doubling up the line to make a loop. Thank you for sharing that information. :-)
@gesangmanggala9966
@gesangmanggala9966 5 лет назад
I prefer having a loop than tying a leader directly to the fly line. I mostly use streamers here, and sometimes I need to attach a sinking tip to adjust to the water depth. Having a loop really makes it easier to change leader to sinking tip, and vice versa.

@RussellPlatten 7 лет назад
+Sam Gritzke Hi Sam. The loop on the end of your fly line is what you attach your leader to. Watch the video through to the end, I demonstrate a very quick and easy way to attach the leader to the loop which explains it all. I hope this helps! :-)
@scottcampbell7033
@scottcampbell7033 6 лет назад
The leader is a long"clear" stretch of tapered line that leads to the tippet which attaches to the fly. Some times a long leader is necessary if the water is clear or still or if the fish are spooky. I can tell you I personally never use a nine foot leader. I also don't waste money on tapered leaders from the store I just use different lbs test line and knot them. My rule is usually the length of the rod is too long for the leader because the line ends up inside the guides. For trout I use 7.5 foot rod most of the time and about 7 foot leader. Saltwater I use short 5 foot leaders because of needing more weight to throw the big flies. Good luck
