When I was a kid, my uncle was a colt breaker, you'd got to his place and every colt had his tail tied with a loop. He'd catch them up 4-5 at a time, saddle and tie a head around, go grad another, you may see 4-5 at a time doing littel quiet bending circles, he'd monitor them, find one wo was now understanding, bend hi the other way. I never saw a fight, thrash or panic.. he TAUGHT them to understand...

Ill bet he learned it from the same source I did, a book called Magners book of stock. Or at least from someone that traced back to Magner. He was a true horse whisper right after the Civil war and the worlds first for profit clinician. 99% of what the Dorrance brothers talked about can be traced to Red Ellison and from him to Magner. Nothing new under the sun.

@@HorsemanshipAsAnArt Bro, almost ALL of my mentors have been very clear that they "Didn't INVENT any of the stuff" they share! I'm not sure where he picked it up. He was a helluva colt man though! Saw some awesome stuff sitting on the fence.. Then of course as little shavers if they went to ground driving one, they'd snag one of us boys off the fence and put us up there so the colt coudl get use to a human up there! If we got scared we get yelled at to "DOn't Scare the Horse" !! hahah

Good job! Nothing wrong with leading by reins as long as he's following. If he needs to be pulled around handlers and horse need a bit more work.

The concept works. I’d run the reins through the stirrups. Helps keep his head off the ground.

What's the benefit of tail tying verses tying to the saddle rear D?
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt Год назад
the tail pulls back and releases like your hand and they dont like to lean against it. They will learn to lean on that D ring pretty fast if you dont stay there and move them around

Imagine your yoga instructor doing this to you. How supple you would be with your lips tied to your rectum. Does anyone remember the "Rhythm Collector"? Richard Shrek would tie the horses bit to the horses back feet. I worked cleaning stalls for this western pleasure trainer who tried the Rhythm Collector. It was one amazing wreck. The horse was being worked in the round pen when my boss hooked him up. Then the horse was asked to move forward, he panicked when he couldn't lift his head. The horse destroyed the round pen but luckily did not hurt himself. These are just thoughts as the horse in this is not suffering. He seems just fine with whatever is being taught.
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt Год назад
he is just fine, because I do things correctly. zero of that exercise had to do with making the horse more flexible, if that had been my goal I would have straightened him. watch again, you may learn something.

I was wondering, is there a specific reason why you drape the right rein around its neck and not tie it to the saddle horn or not loop it around it?
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt Год назад
not particularly.
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt Год назад
Jan I figured it out. The first time I do this the colt is unsaddled so I have no place to put it, after wards its just habit.
@janboogaerts1616
@janboogaerts1616 Год назад
@@HorsemanshipAsAnArt At 1st when I saw it, I couldn't help but think what if that rein slips down, or what if he steps on it. But than I thought I better check cuz this guy doesn't seem to do anything that isn't thought through. Anyway, we usually use a bycicle inner tube, loop it around the saddle horn, go underneath the cantle's cheyenne roll and tie the to that. Mainly because I want some give to it in case the colt wants to put up a fight. Tieing to the tail will have a similar effect I assume.
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt Год назад
@@janboogaerts1616 very similar and less stuff to keep track of. I have had it slip off and they step on it once in a while, I figure it is preemptive to me get scared and jerking on them for no reason lol.

@@HorsemanshipAsAnArt I love this! Because I hate the thought of a horse flipping over wrecking my saddle and himself. I'm going to try this without the saddle. Thanks for all these great videos!

My only problem with the well bred horses is some of the deadheads that are made from them. Imo a deadhead is just as inferior to me as a horse that isn't well-bred or just wants to buck. Or spook.

when does the release come? what would clinton do?
@HorsemanshipAsAnArt

producer says there is another video on how to tie the knot floating around in there somewhere but no one can remember the name of the video, just sniff around I guess. Its an easy knot, just a half hitch really but people have a hard time with it.
