For anyone who is interested; When Tiffen created Pro Mist Filters they created the different strengths in order to provide a consistent level of filtration across the range of focal length lenses because the filtration effect increases as the focal length of the lens becomes more telephoto. A 1/4 pro mist (black or white) will be much stronger on a 85mm lens than it will be on a 25mm lens. A common formula for using Pro Mist Filters is 1/2 Promist for 18mm and wider, the 1/4 Pro Mist for 25mm - 35mm lenses, and 1/8 for 50mm and above. This principle applies to all diffusion filters. I hope this is information is useful.

I think is safe with 1/8 and never take off from lens, nice subtle softy image from it. Other 1/4 and 1/2 is too much unless you gonna use in purpose

Great way you choose to show the differences in many different ways. Good job! I think I would settle on the 1/8 for a few reasons, it doesn’t wash out as much it has better contrast also you don’t loose too much clarity on the face and I’m sure it will be a lot easier for the camera to auto focus compared to the 1/4, especially in low light.

probably a dumb question but I haven't used a diffusion filter for video - when out doors I usually use a variable ND. Would you stack the vnd on before or after the diffusion filter or would the ND ruin the effect of the diffusion filter?

Great review. I have both and would say the 1/4 is the way to go if you are running a matte box. It keeps those flares down whenever you are using a flag so the highlights aren’t too distracting and you get that smooth look. It also depends on the camera you shoot as well. From a high contrast camera like the GH5S I prefer the 1/4 but the BMPCC4k I use the 1/8 or none.

i think the focal length also matters for eg. if we are using tight focal length like 50mm 1/8 will be fine and for wide angle like 24mm 1/4 will look better , except for night time 1/8 is best .Nice video.😁✌ Brandon li has done the explanation on focal length using bpm. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9Mf9h2OYwbM.html

My estimation is that if you’re going to be close to the camera with the light, one should go with 1/8th but if the lights are like across some distance out, the 1/4 is what you want. 1/4 is way too much up close for most people’s needs.
