In this video I am unboxing an EDM arc generator by BAXEDM, a few high voltage film capacitors and a pair of insulation rubber gloves. Just for fum I am charging one of the 350 µF 1500 V caps to various voltages only to short-circuit it with a servo motor. Such a high energy discharge could also be used to pump a YAG laser. In the second half of the video I am picking up and repairing an old AC / DC TIG welder by Rehm.

Make sure to sharpen that tungsten! The finer the point the finer your arc will be (in theory). It’s also worth it to make sure the type of tungsten you’re using can do all the different processes you’re looking for. AC/DCEP/DCEN. Not all tungsten is created equal. There’s a TON to learn about TIG but I’m sure you can figure it out on your own. I’m excited to see what you do with this.

That H bridge reminds me of my first real life experience of the failure mode of some (most?) high-current semiconductors: They short. At a place I worked we had a huge truck battery charger (48v, maybe 50-60 amps? - the truck weighed about 4 t) where one of the Schottky diodes in the rectifier failed, and it was designed to burn of its lead wire (they where intentionally quite thin solid strand wires). In comes our mechanic, sees the obvious problem (those thin wires are way to thin as one of them melted!), resoldered all of them with heavy gauge wire and turned it on. Quite a spectacular fireworks, and now _all_ the diodes didn't work :P

I welded up quite a bit of 1/4” aluminum last night, best of luck learning. I’m sure you’ve been watching people give tips. Keep everything clean and use clean gloves. Wipe your tig wire down and you’ll be on the right track. If you see a bunch of black garbage around your weld, your argon flow may not be enough. Oh, and that argon bottle is way too small. 😂 if you have AC balance, set it to 30% and when you’re attempting to weld dissimilar sizes of aluminum you will want to use a larger tig wire size or you will likely just keep melting only the wire back :)
