Thanks a lot. It a chain alignment tool. You sit it on the rear sprocket, see the red dot on the chain next to the sprocket then turn the wheel a bit so the light is now shining further down the chain. The dot should be at the same place all the way down the chain then you know it is straight.

DuPont chain lube and degreaser have worked great over my last three bikes for ~130k miles. Rarely need to adjust chain compared with others lubes I've tried. Always spin my wheel by hand though, as I'm not getting my hands near a moving chain/spokes. ;)

Good video very informative. I adjusted and cleaned my chain today on my Xrx as it had become loose since purchase in July 2017. I like the Motul C1 to clean the chain. It is a nice product, tough a bit expensive. I agree that it is dangerous to work on the rear wheel with the engine on but it is complicated to distribute the oil nicely if you spin it by hand.

Is the 20-30mm the distance down from the swing arm when the chain is pushed up, or the total travel between upper and lower level? I looked this up in the Haynes manual and it’s not too clear. Love the video. Great breakdown including the spanner sizes and torque settings. Thanks for sharing your skills!

@MuddySump
@MuddySump 10 лет назад
Hi. Yes it's the same. Since it's on the paddock stand you've already got the tension taken up that you should have with both wheels on the floor so can set the chain tension to the proper spec
@Grumpyoldtwit
@Grumpyoldtwit 7 лет назад
Could you explain why you put the spanner between the chain and sprocket while you tightened the wheel nut? I recently had a new rear tire fitted, and the mechanic did something similar, except he used a rag, not a spanner.

Hey @MuddySump - quick question. Trying to figure out exactly where the halfway point is on the swing arm so I can accurately check the chain slack. In the video you just say it's halfway between the front / back sprocket. I'm having a hard time locating that point without taking off the shifter mechanism so I can access the front sprocket cover so I can take an accurate measurement. Is there not some sort of mark on the swing arm? There is so much exacting information with NM settings, chain slack parameters (20-30 mm), etc. that I'm surprised it's not an exact mark. Is this an exact point for checking or is it more of a general eyeball halfway point?

today, while adjusting the chain, after unlocking the axle nut and the 2 lockouts I got stuck when the offside bolt for the adjustment wouldn't move. I managed to turn it maybe at urn at best but nothing more than that. I'm worried I could end up braking it. Has this ever happened to you before? Do you have any advice for it? thank you
@MuddySump
@MuddySump 8 лет назад
It's what I fear every time I go to turn them. They are known to seize in. Best to take the wheel off and try it with a socket instead of a spanner. Squirt wd40 on the bolt inside the swingarm and let it soak for a bit. There's holes on the inside of the swingarm and they let dirt and water in onto the bolt.
@ketamyna
@ketamyna 8 лет назад
Thanks. I'll try it. Had both tires replaced with the pilot 4 trail and the guy didn't do any adjustment. So I did it myself but the bolt was stuck. Probably previous owner never checked it, considering what I've found on the chain too. I'll spray wd40 and leave it overnight then I'll take the wheel off and try with a socket. Thanks again.
