I think the collabs with Bob Does Sports and Grant and others are really good for Rick's game, particularly when he plays a bunch in a week, rather than just one offs here and there. I also wish Guy was in on the collabs more. He has become such a staple of the main channel, I think he's earned it.

TW is coming from a golf coaching perspective as opposed to course vlogs. In an ideal world, everyone would have a coach, have lessons, get great feedback, have time to practice etc. However, life isn’t like that so people (like me) watch Danny Maude, Dan Grieve and a select few others to get some pointers. The downside is the lack of feedback and reassurance that you’re actually doing it right versus making a complete arse of it. If you’re lucky it makes you a little better but often it can be a rabbit hole that you probably shouldn’t be going down.

Well.. Rick is a youtuber that also did a lot of youtube golf instruction.. i'm just surprised he wasnt more offended.. youtube instruction with legitimate instructors has its place in the golf instruction space.

I think a bit of context helps. The way Tiger was asked was: "I'm sure many here stayed up countless hours watching youtube videos. What's the one tip that you would give an amateur if he or she wanted to just improve their game?" Tiger didn't hesitate and gave the very logical response by saying to get off youtube and go hit some balls with a big smile on his face. This all happened while he was swinging a club on the practice range in a very relaxed setting. I think it's easy enough to get what he means and theres absolutely no reason to be offended as a golf youtuber. He than continued talking about club head awareness etc and how the only way to improve that is to hit balls.

@@Nathaniel.Spencer_GolfI can assure you that if you were in our 30s or 40s, lacking flexibility and a body that is more suited to sitting at a desk than hitting golf balls, you may need a pointer or three to get started. You should of course practice with intent, but if you and your buddies are clueless of where to even start, getting basic tips is incredibly useful. RU-vid can provide that. If you can afford to then go see a golf instructor but they are hit and miss as well. It's not the end all be all. but if you're lost about why you slice every ball, looking up a youtube video is easier and cheaper, than going to a golf coach.

Speaking on RU-vid and golf watching I myself never had a single interest in golf, other than putting it on the golf channel when I'm napping because all their whispering is soothing lol, but I can count on 1 hand the amount of times in the last 50 years I've gone to a driving range or putting course and never been on a golf course in my life. After finding Rick and Peter's Golf Bidder challenge I started watching and next thing I knew I was signing up for a sing analysis, buying a set of recommended used clubs, going to the range 3-4 times a week, and all that happened because of RU-vid, not because of Tiger and the pro's, but because you guys made it look fun, you guys showed your mistakes, your bad days, but also the excitement of hitting a great shot (Guys Eagle shot will always come to mind). May 2023 you guys, and the youtube platform, got another new golfer.

I believe Tiger is talking about the tips and lessons online. I can see how they do more damage then good for a lot of players. If don't have an expert telling you what your faults are and just try to go on RU-vid it is dangerous for your game. I had read he was a fan of Grant Horvat.

I'd love to only be able to hit balls on the range. It would cost me 400 dollars a month. That's not including my membership. I've never had a lesson in person or been able to hit balls when I want. Tigers detached from the reality of cost. RU-vid is the present and future of golf. Tiger is the past.

@@back2back379 - Padrig Harrington basically said the samething on his channel a few times. He said get out there and hit big hooks, slices, low shot, high shots in order to learn to control your clubface and eventually you will find a middle ground between those shots. There is some great info on RU-vid but it can also waste a ton of time for a lot of people trying to get better.

I 100 percent agree with you. Too many online coaches with quick tips on how to fix a slice when not one of them may be the answer to your problem. And then you start working on something that wasn’t wrong and your swing gets more out of whack.

RU-vid is tremendously good for golf and its growth. Access to relatable golfers. Relationship building with those players via the comments section, contests and podcasts. I like watching near flawless golf - but I am surprised how much more I enjoy watching relatable golf. So here is the truth - I personally enjoy watching golf vlogs of my favorite RU-vidrs more than I do watching PGA tournaments. Quick, relatable, and good laughs. I’m glad Guy brought up the subject of someone taking time off from the game. I had a knee surgery two weeks ago that has taken me away from the game. I have four more weeks before I can even put weight on my left leg. I probably have several months before I can attempt full swings. It’ll be nine months or more before my left knee feels normal again. I’m looking forward to this opportunity to tinker my swing. My knee injury hampered my ability to get completely through my left side. Because of this surgery, I’ll have half a year or more to really re-find my swing and get back to single digit handicap.

@@Chris54321 if somebody has a bad swing, certainly paired with a poor or nonexistent understand of the golf swing in general, they are extremely unlikely to improve much via RU-vid. RU-vid isn’t a new thing. Then culture of “swing tips of the month” is long lasting. The old joke was always about the guys at the club who would bring the latest golf monthly magazine in the course with them and read Arnold Palmer “July tip for a better drive” in between holes. Of course, it didn’t help then at all. Now, that’s just on RU-vid.

Not going to lie but some of my best rounds have been after I was out of golf for a few weeks. Coming out of having my back go out where I couldn't swing for weeks, still wasn't sure how it would respond but it was last night of league and I had to go for points..shot a 1 over round for 9 holes. Years ago, was out of town for weeks, got back, no warm up, shot 3 under with 5 birdies for 9 holes in league. Conversely, having a ton of practice, felt great about my game where it was, and having the utmost confidence I've shot some of my worst rounds.

Just wanted to add into the golf RU-vid debate - the start of my golf game was pretty much all watching videos on RU-vid and it helped me get great foundations, and today I use it as a resource for specific types of shots when I can't get a lesson, it's invaluable for this. What Tiger's right about though is if you just consume golf tips from social media you'll get thousands of different opinions on how to do any type of shot, thousands of different hacks for how to remove a slice, etc, when in reality, just getting some lessons will identify what tips are relevant to you and what steps you need to take to improve. I spent 8 months this year playing without lessons and I went from shooting +36 to around +32, and I've now been having lessons once a week for about 7 weeks, and I'm shooting low +20s and high +teens. TL;DR - RU-vid is perfect for foundations or new shots, but go get consistent lessons (and rounds) if you want to improve rapidly!

Being an older guy my golfing heroes were Seve, Nick Faldo, Greg Norman then a bit later a huge fan of Monty, Ernie Els and Nick Price, there was nothing I like more that seeing the Europeans and Brits and rest of the world win majors against the American players, it wasn't because I don't like Americans it's just they generally won more often than not, so when other players like Seve, Nick Faldo, Padraig and more recently Rose and Fitzpatrick won the majors I appreciated it more, so when the Ryder Cup comes round I'm always 100% behind the European team. I also love how much it means to the players, I think it was a positive thing when it changed from GB to Europe it made it far more competetive and enjoyable to watch. As for Tiger I get where he's coming from but not going to lie some of the tips I've got for driving and chipping from youtube videos have really improved those aspects of my game, but I did go out and practice them. 3 wedges is plenty. 46, 52, 58. Nobody wants to hit a full wedge anyways. It gave me the option to have 3i (220) and 3hy (230) both in the bag at the same time. A weak 3 wood (245) and a driver has been fitting the bill nicely.

My game has improved tremendously, specifically, from watching Rick Shiels instruction videos. Others too! We're not born on a golf course there Tiger.

I’m all for RU-vid coaching if the clientele are clued up on their own swing mechanics and p positions but it’s blanket coaching if there’s not enough understanding

Rick, all your channels are excellent for content and I have followed you for some time. I've noticed a serious lack of confidence in your current golf game. Just watched you against Grant H and watched your confidence physically drain away during the match. You have a great game inside and all you have to do is find away to unlock it. I wish you all the best with your journey. 👍👍

I agree with tiger. If you look up how to fix a slice, there are thousands of different videos on RU-vid saying how to fix it with hundreds of different diagnosis’s. It’s hard to find the right thing to fix your swing when no one sees your swing in person. If you want to get better get a in life coach. If you want to get into golf RU-vid is good for that info.

Am sure Tiger was in part joking but also as Guy says Tiger very much believes in “grinding it out” and there are no short cuts, even for him : The GOAT

Tiger is a very cerebral about golf, of course he's going to say to go hit balls (because that's what he's done most of his life). BUT i think he's forgotten the lessons his dad got him when he was very young. He had a father who was golf crazy, he had access to a golf course and he got continuous lessons at a very young age. That's great for him, but for anyone that DOESN'T have that sort of thing, RU-vid is as close as we're going to get. And there's plenty of useful nuggets out there on a lot of different youtube channels. The real trick is to figure out which ones help you, and which ones are just sending you down rabbit holes.

I'd imagine the reason why he said don't watch RU-vid for golf advice is because as helpful as it can be at times...it can be confusing when you watch one creator say one thing and then another creator says not to do what you just heard the first one say 😂 I see his point though as I can't really afford actual lessons right now it's a great alternative for some tips

I think Peter Finch had a good antidote. He probably saw Charlie doing something and asked him about it and he said that he saw it on RU-vid. And Tiger probably thought. Hey!!!! I'm the best the game has ever known. I'm your EFN resource.

I’ve never had any problem switching to supporting Europe in the Ryder Cup. But then I’m happy to support England and can seamlessly switch to UK or even to supporting Wales, Scotland, N Ireland (as long as they’re not playing England) and I’ll even support Ireland like I did during the 94 World Cup. I think a lot of the thinking that Guy expresses comes from English club football where it’s your team only and literally everyone else is the enemy.

I will agree with Tiger that RU-vid can be a very confusing place for a new golfer. For instance, search "how to hit a 3 wood" and you will get literally opposite advice (hit down vs hit up like a driver) on different channels. Nothing replaces a good coach and tons of play time. This said, I think he is not grasping the impact of Rick's channel and others (GoodGood etc) on the game of golf. I have seen YT and Meetups revolutionize the game of poker for instance, the impact cannot be understated.
