Tight To Wood Winter River Smallmouth

The term "tight to wood" is commonly said about how to present to river smallmouth bass following a cold front. I demonstrate my presentation and methods of location of wood by dragging a jig, catching several 19 plus inchers. This video also provides a breakdown of several current features of eddies, describing how fish relate to them and where they go when actively feeding.

Gotta thank you for the tips on river fishing, Jeff! Just kayaked fished the Schuylkill River two days ago (2/10/24), more just to say I was out there kayak fishing in February. I started looking for & watching the foam, and looking for current breaks like you often mention. Then I saw a tree stump along shore and literally thought " If Jeff was here, he'd be telling us thats a perfect current break to find bass in!"..So I cast a Nikko Helgramite in there, let it sink, felt a thump and got a nice 13 "river Smallie! All the credit goes to you, Jeff, as at 66 years old, I never, ever even thought of river kayak fishing in February til I watched your great videos.....THANK YOU!! :-)

Man! Sure glad I found your channel! I’m not even sure where that river is but I’m certain that I can apply your methods to my local river systems and learn more about how smallmouth relate to their environment. And better understand how to read water and know the location of the “spot” and then begin to find the “hang out spot” and the “eat spot” on the “spot. The illustrations are a tremendous help! Hope u don’t change a thing! Looking forward to finishing your December playlist and them on to January. A lot of great information! Also when you pan the camera and point things out within the spot really helps me to apply the information to similar spots!

I was out Saturday I got 3 nice fish but pretty slow all on a jerk bait. I got all mine under the remaining grass Eddie’s at the very bottom slack water.I fished the island’s for a while with a jig with no bites.Thanks for the video it’s really helpful.

That position (the far downstream portion of still foam) is a fairly non-aggressive position. It sounds like it was a tough bite. Glad you got a few good ones!

Jeff, I love your channel. I just found it about a month ago. Great content and information! I am pretty new to fishing the river. I usually launch at Fort Hunter. Whenever I fish a jig, ned rig, or anything that I am bouncing off the bottom, I get snagged constantly. Do you have any advice on this? Like weight of jig head or casting direction like upstream, downstream? Thanks!
@TheLittleStuff
@TheLittleStuff 5 месяцев назад
Cast upstream. Let the jig touch down on a pendulum swing, not slack line free fall. Once you feel a snag, don’t dig in and pull. Instead, let some line out, get your rod tip as high as possible to change the line angle to clear the object, and lightly jiggle. If that doesn’t work, get closer and re-try. Buy some plug knockers. Dugout bait & tackle in Marietta, Georgia sells them. They dislodge everything from jerkbaits to jigs to jackhammers.

Do you put rattles on/in your jigs when the water gets dirty?
@TheLittleStuff
@TheLittleStuff 7 месяцев назад
I have in the past, but the smaller profile is so important this time of year, and a rattle adds size.

i live on the west side of lake clarke right above safe harbor and have serious trouble catching small mouth this time of year, any tips on baits and or even location? i’ve tried york haven and caught 1 single 8 incher on a ned rig. other than that i can’t even seem to get a bite.
@TheLittleStuff
@TheLittleStuff 7 месяцев назад
You could go try the confluence of the Juniata with the Susquehanna. My videos go in depth on lure choices, examples of what cover and current to target.

Water Temp? thanks!
@TheLittleStuff
@TheLittleStuff 7 месяцев назад
Don’t know. It would be a guess. Don’t let water temp be an excuse. Just fish and remember that smallmouth in lakes will bite under the ice. Put it out of your head and just fish.

What's your opinion on micro power poles for the river ? More effective than anchors? Seems would be perfect in conjunction with torqueedo ..
@TheLittleStuff
@TheLittleStuff 7 месяцев назад
I used one for a few months. It tangled in overhead branches and made horrible fish spooking noises when powered down into rocks. It’s a great tool in sand or pluff mud.

Gd stuff Jeff. Do your hands ever get too cold?
@TheLittleStuff
@TheLittleStuff 7 месяцев назад
Yes. I like to wear fleece fingerless gloves and put those hot hands packs tucked into the back of my hands. Carry multiple sets of gloves (they are inexpensive) and swap out wet ones for dry. I also carry a thermos of hot water and just hold the cap/cup to warm up my fingers while I sip on it.

Man they must be really clamping down on those bat wings! That the ElaZtech doesn’t break easily? Do you ever try using those TRD craws? There a very small presentation, for short strike, I have got some really good fish on them when they are short striking the baits. Great Stuff Jeff thanks for sharing.
@TheLittleStuff

The TRD Crawz is a good option. I went through a bunch of bat WingZ on the next trip too. Switched to the TRD Gobiez and landed all of my bites.
