to call this "a narcissism thing" is such a lazy (and ableist) cop out... young people learn to define themselves through their surroundings. Back in the day we had subcultures, for example. Today's society is not only more fast paced, there's also a lot of things going on at the same time and constant exposure to all sorts of media that's easily accessible and replaces regular conversation. It's a systemic problem and instead of shaming them maybe we should be helping kids ground themselves and model adequate behaviour for them so they don't get so lost while navigating this.

Mafia/mob bosses are also romanticized in Gen Z literature. The mafia dissolves people in acid. It's NOT cute.

Whether or not The Godfather has romanticised the mafia is debatable. Yes, the power of gangsters has always facinated people but when you actually watch the movie (or read the book) the lifestyle is actually showing how the characters not only lose themselves the deeper they get into business, but they also lose everyone they love (or have to push them away, either for protection or for liability reasons). Of course, reality is way worse than fiction when it comes to the mafia.

My Ex is Sicillian American, his dad was a "business man" in NJ and we side eye and cackle at this trend. Ive met the families and seen the women they are emulating. Most women are flashy and always in glam because they had no choice, they were expected to look beautiful and successful as they are a direct reflection of her husband and HIS success. Alot of this trend is rooted in misogyny and violence and its not great to minimize it into a micro trend. Just my 2 pennies.

You could say that about a lot of Black fashion seen in hip hop and rap. I wouldn't assume just because someone dresses that way doesn't mean that they partake in a certain problematic lifestyle or want to actually join a gang. I like wearing 50s fashion, but that doesn't mean I want to be a woman in the 50s that was littered with misogyny and racism. We have a saying in the vintage community, "Vintage style, not vintage values" for this exact reason.

I remember this story (I'm Italian) that made it to the news. This mod guy was a mafia kid, he fell in love with a normal girl, he harassed her DAILY and eventually proposed to her but she didn't want to be in a relationship with this guy (obvously) since she was also in love with another man. Because in italy at the time we had the law of the "matrimonio riparatore" (=the repair marriage) he r@ped this woman and proposed to her. Because of this law, after SA, a woman was forced to marry the guy who r@ped her in order to save face in front of the society of the time and her own family. She absolutely refused and took things to court (what. a. absolute. QUEEN.) and eventually this court case made the law of the "matrimonio riparatore" illegal. I don't remember the name of the girl but she's an absolute italian legend and made history. I wanted to tell this story because maybe another girl went through all of this and became a mob wife against her will. It's absolutely NOT all glitz and glam. This is a serious topic and deserves to be treated seriously.

So this is the culture that they are pretending that these people are offended by, because they dress similar to those women? I’m sorry but if these fakes make it look bad then isn’t that a good thing? I really don’t get why some were offended by this, personally. It’s such a shame that women who have no idea what any of this shit is who just happen to like to dress like this will be lumped together with people pretending to be something they aren’t on tiktok because people also can’t see the difference between just dressing a certain way and also acting a persona.

I agree so much. I have this whole look in my closet and have had the vibe since I was in middle/highschool but with some variations with influence(I'm Mexican American) from Mexican & Spanish glamour & show girls. Dark feminine/Pinup was always my look and I feel like now I'm just looking silly because the clean girls have all turned on this character because they lack their own identity. Anything to "run" to get to the trend the fastest. I honestly can't believe the places that this trend is coming up, like daytime shows and local news segments. I get second hand embarrassment.

There is a distinct difference between Italian culture and Italian American culture. As someone who is Italian American and grew up in Queens and Long Island, “mob” and “mob wives” aesthetic is just the norm. We’ve all been donning big hair, heavy makeup, spray tans, leather, black, and leopard for our whole lives. It’s gaudy, it’s fun, it’s kind of tacky but in the best glamorous way possible. I now live in Florida, and I always stick out like a sore thumb because I took my “mob wife” aesthetic that I’ve been doing my whole life with me. But I wouldn’t change a thing about it.

it's funny they specify faux fur bc most mob spouses i know/have seen if they wear a fur coat you better believe it's not faux 😀 and not caring about animal lives is nothing compared to what mobs do to humans. it's not faux fur ethically sourced garments and tiktokking stanley cups 😂 i'm glad i got off TT, And thank you Robert for keeping us non-tiktokkers in the loop. And the jewelry. You know real mob wives did not buy that jewelry on sale or discounted. Those mob wives either received it as a very expensive gift from someone in the mob or someone trying to make business with the mob or they paid cold hard (probably blood stained) cash. With no remorse. A lot of people say the men in the mobs are cold/hard but from what I have seen & from seeing the cartels in Mexico it is usually the woman who runs the show….they’re the scary powerful ones.

@@chibiktsn3 I'm honestly down for that, especially buying it second hand from a local consignment or vintage clothing store, it's not supporting the business that actually made the fur garment so you're not giving your money to that industry and it's still a high quality piece and you can support a local business

My fiance was the one who told me about this trend lol he said "look, it's you with the animal print jackets and hair". Anyaays, I'm about over these niche trends. They contribute to unoriginalality and having to buy a whole new wardrobe, and basically change yourself for what's popular. I guess it's always been that way but i feel like social media has turned it into, as you mentioned, cosplay in a way. Over it!

I also find it funny how Americans who have heritage from Italy but have grown up with an Americanized bastardization of Italian culture from 50+ years ago is trying to tell others what is Italian and not. Plus, it's quite insulting to Italians to call "mobs" Italian culture. Anyone in Italy or with actual ties to Italians knows that they despise the mobs and that they're the cause for a lot of hardships and insecurity in the country.

@flimsyenthusiasm5769 we don't speak Italian because most of our Italian family came over in the late 1800s and early 1900s and at that time, immigrants wanted to be "American " and didn't teach their kids their mother tongue and didn't pass down a lot of the traditions of the motherland. It's quite sad and a persistent problem, especially amongst various Caucasian groups. I became obsessed with connecting to my roots. It heals the soul.

I’m sure being a stripper forced to do certain things because you have no other means to isn’t fun either yet many women dress like them for fun every day. Many women even dress Victorian era like even though the women back didn’t have much rights. Personally I think this is ridiculous to get offended by. Acting like this is a part of their content. I’d understand if it were a certain hate group imagery but this? Come on. I wonder if it’s actually Italians who are offended, or “Italian American”

In regards to the trends being completely different from each other, I've noticed that too. When people were tired of the overly contoured glam looks from 2016, they moved onto more colorful looks with the heavy blush and thick eyeliner. Then they moved onto a pseudo-natural direction with the feather brows and clean girl aesthetic. And I guess people want bold make-up again.

So they finally moved on from the Chicanas and cholas? People can do their makeup and blah blah blah however they want but they don't want to recognize or respect the hardships that go along with the lifestyles they're mimicking. And that's the issue here. It's offensive because people will hop on trends that imitate people and cultures that are otherwise mocked. We've seen this recently with "Hot Cheeto Girls" "Cholas" "Chongas" and "Guidettes" and I'm sure more but I've been off social media for a while.
