Right? Even if I like a celebrity, I generally assume a brand is gonna be trash until proven otherwise. There have been some good ones, but they feel like the exception rather than the rule.
Same. And I trust the celebrities less as well. They never mention the in-office treatments they get for all the things skincare product can't fix. And if their products are affordable for me, I know they aren't actually using them. It's just a manipulative, pathetic cash grab. And miss me with this "age positive" nonsense! Most people hate aging, and I don't need preachy celebrities making me feel bad for not being happy about getting older. I just do not believe Ellen has never had fillers or anything done to combat nature, so much like "be kind", "age positivity" is just another philosophy Ellen doesn't actually represent.
@@esotericoctopusI think the rare exceptions are the result of a celebrity actually having a genuine interest in skincare/makeup. Lady Gaga and Selena Gomez come to mind. They seem like they really have fun with it and they actually know what is in their products and why. Stark contrast to Brad Pitt who couldn't have looked less interested in what he was talking about. *YAWN*..."What was I saying? Something about grape skin? I'm Brad Pitt, just buy this crap. Look, we used a whole tree trunk for the cap. It's luxury."
The way Tyra sells products are so intense and scary like why’re you yelling at me over some mascara 😭 like she’s definitely the kiosk girl at the mall aggressively selling you stuff
I hate when celebs just assume they should charge high-end prices simply because of their name. Sophia Vergara has a clothing line at Walmart and her stuff is adorable! Just being famous doesn't mean your brand is worth more money.
As someone who has trouble finding that PERFECT pair of pants, I love her jeans. Once I tried one pair, I was hooked. And having them be affordable and accessible is just so amazing.
The only celeb line I genuinely loved was Salma Hayek's Nuance, which sold at CVS. Incredible, budget-friendly products she co-created in the lab using many of her late Mexican grandmother's beauty formulas. She was also refreshingly transparent when asked if she used her own products, the answer being yes AND the higher end stuff. Was really sad when Nuance was discontinued.
My Mom used to wait until Black Friday every year to get herself a pair of jeans, and Sofia’s line was her go-to the past few years! Super affordable, sturdy, and perfect shape! Other celebs need to take notes
"That (skincare set) is £500. That is half of someone's monthly wage." Robert being so down to earth is the reason I keep watching his content. THANK YOU for being in touch with the experiences of your viewers. ♥
I miss the time when celebrities used to release fragrances instead of skincare or makeup. The celebrity fragrances were most often affordable and smelled really nice.
I feel bad for anyone who gets sucked into an MLM but my sympathy kind of withers when I get saccharine "hey hon" messages from people I haven't talked to since high school telling me how they just want to "bless" me with a life changing business opportunity... 💀
I'm tired of celebs who don't have a passion towards cosmetics and some who don't even do their own makeup pushing their own makeup brands.. It just feels like a money grab at this point.
I’m usually less trustful of a celebrity brand, unless that celebrity has legit expertise or lived experience to bring to the brand. For example, I love Fenty because RiRi basically shamed every other brand into getting their shit together on inclusion in foundation, both in shade and undertones. I love Rare because all of the packaging can be opened with one hand, or with hands that shake, both issues I have dealt with as part of my disability. (Selena Gomez has lupus, and often has weakness in her hands as a result, hence the accessible design.) Both of these women weren’t only famous and beautiful like essentially every other beauty like spokesperson - they took the issues they had IRL with existing makeup on the market and filled those gaps. That’s the opposite of just slapping their name and face on it and raking in the cash.
Exactly. Vs just "I just wanted to" they had actual reasons to get involved. I know kvd is controversial... But it started out as a way to help people cover tattoos if they want or need. So you can be yourself but cover if you have some need. Like there were pencils to color correct as a base and then the foundation REALLY did cover. When it first came out I covered my sleeve just for fun to see if it was legit and it worked. It blew my mind. And I know someone might question why a tattoo artist of all people would want people to help cover them up but I can't imagine a better person than someone who really gets it... Anyway... Just another example lol
Tyra’s thing was a whole episode. Multiple commercials, music video with that current cast. “smack my fat lash” was a play on her talk show where she was trying show the paparazzi that took bad photos of her that she didn’t care and she declared that they could “smack my fat ass”. She must’ve felt it was iconic.
A celebrity doesn’t make it more luxury, but can cheapen it especially if it doesn’t make sense. Like Kim K for example Skims makes sense to me and the products are good quality, but her skincare products don’t make sense to me bc she admits to sleeping in her makeup.. if that makes sense 😅
Omg this Brad Pitt skincare partnership is WILD. There's nothing in there worth $500 for a serum and moisturizer. What the heck are those wooden lids? Why is someone paying extra for the bottles to be harder to put away?! I'm gobsmacked
Tyra is a really cringe person in general. Even growing up watching ANTM she made me cringe at least once per episode 😅 she just takes herself sooo seriously.
I haven’t seen an answer to your question but Yes Robert. The Tyra commercial was a challenge for the final contestants on that season of ANTM (cycle 21). So in essence she got free advertising out of the end of that season via the contestants
Brad Pitt is the one that baffled me the most!! We all know he NEVER sat at home borrowing Angelina's products. Secretly sneaking off at night lounging in a bubble bath with a sheet mask on😂😂 This feels like a MAJOR cash grab!!
Totally. That “aging well” thing that some celebs have going on isn’t skincare, it’s really good Botox. Maybe also some well placed filler. People like to say that you can always tell when someone’s had Botox, but really you can only tell if they’ve had bad Botox.
I bought my first rare beauty blush yesterday because they donated 100% of the purchase to charity for world mental health day and it’s so beautiful and you are so right about how amazing rare beauty is. In my opinion the only thing that having a celebrity be the owner of a company does is give them more promotion and people who are diehard fans of that person will buy it, but I think it doesn’t work out long-term that’s why only companies that are actually good stay long-term like Fenty beauty, rare beauty, and haus labs. If a company is actually not good, and there is no passion behind it. then it will eventually die
Has anyone here seen Thelma and Louise? Brad Pitt has had TONS of stuff done to even out his skin. He had cystic acne and it scarred him pretty good. So, yea, age gracefully after decades of chemical peels and such....
Wait. I never heard about this. I need to investigate because... what? Edit: I haven't made it past the Hello Fresh part before I saw this comment. I didn't realize Robert would explain it 🤦🏻♀️
Because of exactly that. She’s a supermodel. Whose job is to look good wearing clothes while standing still for a pic or walking in a show. It doesn’t take any education or knowledge outside of looking good for that job.
I LOVE me some Tyra, but she's a prime example of why having an education _no matter what you do for a living_ will benefit you in the long run. She can't market herself. She can't keep a decent brand running. All her projects and choices are hard-core cringe. I really wish the best for her but beauty fades and you can't rely upon just that as your money-maker.
The thing that bugs me is every celebrity tries to sell a product that has “never been done before” and the formulations do things that no one else can. I just have a hard time believing that they found something that years of actual scientists and testing have never been able to find before.
skin kind probably meant safe for sensitive skin, like not filled with actives that can cause irritation? but those are the very same actives that bring about actual results
It seems like a lazy attempt at fear mongering about other brands. "skin kind" seems like it's trying to suggest that every other brand is dangerous for your skin. Like, they learned that fear mongering sells product, but they forgot to learn how to actually fear monger.
They do know that Brad Pitt is an actor, right? Like…he’s actually very good at memorising lines and delivering them in a convincing way on camera? They didn’t have to go with that terrible clip of whatever it was he was talking about 😂
I have to agree with you some brand owners are clearly in it for the cash grab but some are actually super invested. Rare beauty as an example Selena you can tell really cares about the brand and is fully invested in it which makes me feel like I want to invest. The Kardashian/Jenner family as an example are just in it to make a few extra quid… again my opinion!!
Totally agreed. It really insults the intelligence of the consumer, these celebrities who will play-act that they’re involved in “their” brand for advertising purposes. When you can see that they’re psyched about the thing they’ve developed, it doesn’t come across like they’re phoning it in.
Lol I was a victim of Tyra Beauty in 2012. I was in school for fashion and I was modeling on the side. One of the girls who did makeup for some of the fashion shows got me into selling it. I broke even so it wasn't too bad but yeah it was really exploitative. The same girl who got me into it is selling php life insurance.... I am an actual makeup artist and not a life insurance agent now so it worked out :D
Celebrity brands, to me, come across as tacky. Only a few escape this feeling due to decent products, packaging and name.. like Fenty Beauty, Rare etc... 😎✌🏼
agreed! i feel like halsey's brand (about-face) is really cool too and suits her. but sadly it's not the case for everyone. they think that just because they can, that they should, and that is so not the right mentality for any brand at all.
Honestly I have to agree. My theory on why these brands are less tacky is because the brands don’t have the celebrity as the focal point of the brand, instead the brand just happens to be owned by a celebrity that has a passion /or are known for their makeup / skincare, which makes it feel like less of a money grab and more of a passion project
@@oliviaaarose_7916yes! If the product is actually good it will speak for itself (with a celebrity NUDGE) if the marketing is an unrelated celebrity it just tells me they have literally nothing else to offer than a face 🥱
I remember back in the early 90s my mom buying Victoria Principal's (actress known for Dallas) skincare line. Back when it could only be purchased from tvl. I guess celebrity beauty brands will always be around, but I tend to side eye the ones that don't have much of an identity apart from the celebrity. Like Rare Beauty and Haus Labs are very well done in a way that I can forget they're celebrity founded brands.
If there is a celebrity attached to it, I automatically think it’s garbage until I’m proven wrong! I know that’s ridiculous, but that’s just my personal bias.
Tyra used ANTM contestants in her actual ad! It's so bad! I'm sorry for those models. I remember watching those episodes and I never thought she would try and market them to sell a product.
I love the support you show James by being like “I don’t even know what a face cleanser is” and likewise with James and his “foundation…? Like for houses?” 😂😂
Omg, they keep doing that and I was sooooo confused when I first encountered their videos (through RU-vid's recommendations) because I didn't know they were 2 different people! I had watched maybe like 2 of Robert's videos when I encountered a video from James and in the video James says: "I don't know anything about makeup" and I was like what? What do you mean? But I saw a video of this guy doing makeup reviews!
Celebs attaching themselves to various beauty brands cheapens it for me because most times the products aren't as good. The Tyra Banks deal sounds a lot like MaryKay...I got suckered in and lost $100 bucks to that just as the world went to hell back in 2020...it wasn't until I actually sat down and read through everything that I realized exactly what they were expecting me to do. I sold off my kits, kept the bags, and chalked my lost $100 as a bought lesson
THAT WAS THE CRINGIEST AD EVER 😂😂 I really don’t care either way if a celeb is involved in a brand. But Tyra Banks has made so much money of just plain toxicity throughout her whole career. I’ll stay with celeb brands like Rare Beauty and Haus Labs 😍
The smack my fat lash mascara is referencing to years ago when Tyra was featured on a tabloid in her swimsuit and people were making mean comments about her figure. Tyra came out and said that those people can “kiss her fat a**.” So that name is playing off that quote, but still sounds weird and doesn’t make sense lol.
Yes she made a whole episode about that picture and kept saying that quote to prove how much it didn't bother her 😅 okay Tyra... u sure? Also on that episode she came out about 15 to 20 pounds lighter and swore she was the same weight when the pic was taken in the same suit, basically saying "see I'm not fat!" 😅 it bothered the hell out of her
I was so mad when I realized how mean Tyra was with the models, especially with POC (that meme We were rooting for you!!! is part of one of those hateful tirades) and when she made a literal MLM... uuugh! I'm so glad you are talking about MLMs and how dangerous they are!
Omg I’m embarrassed for Tyra after watching that advertisement she was in…so cringe 😬 I have never bought celebrity brands, but I received Alice Keys Keys Soulcare Muti-benefit peptide serum in PR to review for free for my honest review & I loved it and it’s a decent price imo. I just ran out and I’m definitely re-buying 💜
I am so glad you are letting us know about these brands! I don't tend to buy any brand just because it is celebrity related - unless its environmental related: like Nikki Reed for example. Her company is reusing gold from computers and such and turns it into jewellery. That's just one example of course :) also big congrats on hello fresh, they only support the big ones :) 💜
IMO, most celeb collabs fall flat. Not just makeup either, other beauty products, food/beverages, clothing lines, etc. Markets are becoming over saturated & it’s sad. Thank you, Robert. I love hearing your take on this too. Rather than buying into the hype, you tell it like it is. Thank you for being your authentic self. ❤
I don’t mind a celebrity coming out with a makeup line if they’re really invested in it. You can tell if they actually use their products and if they had a hand in helping formulate their products. If they care about consistency and quality and the customer’s experience. THAT makes it feel more luxury and special to me. When a celebrity just slaps their name on a product but can hardly describe it, what ingredients it contains or why it is beneficial to use, then it cheapens it for me. The quote that always comes to mind is Kylie Jenner “I use and like this primer bc it’s a really good primer” saying this about HER OWN primer 🤔 what??! So the answer to whether it feels a bit more luxury or cheaper with a celeb attached depends 🤷♀️ love your makeup look! Congrats on the Hello Fresh sponsorship 🎉 well deserved 👏 👏
That’s the first time I’ve ever actually watched a sponsored section of a video and enjoyed it. Now I so badly need another cooking video from you and James 😩
I do buy & enjoy Rare Beauty, Haus Labs, and some Fenty. Otherwise, celeb brands are a huge PASS, especially with cosmetics & skincare because they rarely do their own - it's a sham!
I just think the second you put a celebrity name onto a product it's a signal to jack up the price. I like affordable brands from the drug stores like elf and wet n wild. I'm just a simple gal
Brad launching skin care had me hollering. No amount of him waving his artsy glasses can convince me of this brand. And looking good is part of his job, I can’t say it would strike me as particular achievement but part of the basic job description. Ellen de Generes no different. In general I am deeply suspicious of celebrity brands and expect a rip off per se. Sorry that was really naughty and I enjoy this video tremendously
Oh my GOD the mermaid blue eye look is divine! When I do blue eyeshadow, I just look like I’m off to an 80s party 😭 Edit: regarding Brad P talking about his brand, have you heard the clip of him talking about his morning and evening skincare routine using the products? It’s hilarious, he so clearly does NOT use the products (I think he even calls one by the wrong name). Chris Evans (the English variety) uses the clip often on his Virgin radio breakfast show. It’s burned into my brain!
When you haven't watched Robert's videos in months because of, you know, life! And then binge watch every night in bed for the past 3 weeks. It's pure bliss!
There were tabloids and magazines taking unflattering photos and calling Tyra fat years ago. She went onto her show and said “kiss my fat ass” under the guise of body positivity and it became a huge phenomenon at the time. Which is likely where the inspiration came from for the mascara.
I use to feel safer to spend my money on celebrity skin care. Now I feel scammed. After being ripped off for the last time on a JLO company. I came here. Looking for the real review. That is why I found you.. I picked someone real. I also follow your brother for skin care. Your channel is the only one ever I have been a paid subscriber. Thank you.
The Brad Pitt/winery collab would have made more sense if they had cork lids and went into how they were anti oxidant from grape skins or something. Perthe price, you can ask for whatever you want, see if the market will bear it. If it's good, (think Rare beauty), people will pay it.
For those prices of Brad Pitt’s skincare line I want Brad to deliver them to my door himself and give me a full facial and the lids of the bottles need to made of diamonds! 😳🤦♀️
I think it would only entice me if they were in that industry so I trust what they recommend- like Brad Mondo making hair care or Lisa Eldridge making make up. Not here for the cash grab celeb associations to brands
The only celebrity brand that I was actually excited about was Lauren Conrad (very sad it's gone now) I owe my obsession with makeup and in particular winged eyeliner 100% to her
Any time a celebrity releases a product, I side-eye it heavily. Honestly, unless their products are screaming my name and are something I really feel like I could truly benefit from, I usually don't purchase because these rich ppl don't need any more money. 😂
First of all, the eyeshadow look is popping! I don’t mind celebrities creating brands when they have a lot to do with the product such as Trixie Mattel with Trixie Cosmetics. But when it seems like the celebrity isn’t involved and has just put their name on something, I’m much less likely to buy it.
For me it depends on how many brands that celebrity has attached to them. It’s the same thing for influencers. The more selective that celebrity/influencer is, the more I’m willing to trust them. For companies themselves, it really says a lot about them by who they are willing to work with and how many notable people they want to work with. It comes across as they don’t know who their target audience is. So they’d rather just go for anyone.
Tyra’s brand being an MLM is ridiculous. Like you said in the video, it was completely unnecessary from her, and predatory. I cannot stand MLMs, the only people that can make decent money from it are people who are already popular or influential in some way. Those at the bottom are getting sucked into a cycle of making a minute ‘profit’ and having to spend that on their own stock. I went to my colleagues ‘launch party’ for BodyShop At Home years ago and the lady who recruited her was telling her to spend her profits on buying party game prizes and stuff like that. It was ridiculous and very eye opening. ‘Reinvest in your business’ is what she said. My colleague was a single mum looking to make extra income. It was beyond predatory.
OMG ! Victoria Jackson has been around for years ...she did some of the first infomercials for her cosmetics. She's the brains behind this, and ELLEN is the mouthpiece.
I’m skeptical that she’s the “brains” behind the operation as she doesn’t seem to be aware of the fact that mushrooms are indeed not plants! I guess you can be business-savvy and not too academically-minded though.
Blast from the past! I remember seeing her makeup tutorials on TV as a kid!!! Just googling her, and didnt know she was married to Bill Guthy, of Guthy-Renker the infomercial kings!!! They have Cindy Crawford, JLo and other celeb brands.
Maybe just me , but if Tyra launched a ANTM make up line in like cycle 10-11 of the show , with makeup that similiar to what the make up artist used on the models .. and sold it as a kit of products .. it would sell amazing .. FYI , i hope the ANTM models were paid for the ad
Not sure if Tyra made ANTM contestants do free labor for her cosmetics, but she definitely did for her Model land book. You know, the one so bad that it's out of print now 😂
It really depends on which celebrity is attached to the brand honestly. But in most instances I just roll my eyes and carry on. Especially after J-Lo and her olive oil 💀
If I have great respect for the artist, then it becomes a luxury line for me, but I want the artist to be fully involved like Gwen Stefani is with GXVE, Lady GaGa with Haus Labs and Selena Gomez is with Rare Beauty…💜
For me it depends on the celeb. Zendaya, for example. Her team cares greatly about her image. She will never be seen in anything but the most amazing clothes, she will forever be a fashion and beauty icon. I trust that her team has done thorough research into the brand deal, and will back out if there are any sour factors which could tarnish her reputation. Kardashians however? I go out of my way to avoid anything to do with them.
I just got a Kylie lipgloss in the Selfridges advent calendar. Feels off brand for Selfridges and people were pissed it was included in there! It’s a nice lipgloss, but I apply it in secret so nobody knows what I’m using 😂 brands are definitely cheapened by celebrities. Even great products are cheapened by the celebrities who are associated with them. Grown ass adults who have the money to buy premium makeup are not buying celeb products.
Honestly if it's celebrity skincare or celebrity make-up I'm way less likely to buy it really, unless it's apparent it's a real passion and not just a cash grab. I would never buy Goop, that feels like a real prentitous scam to me.
Here early af but it defo cheapens the brand for me. Idk why though. Took me a long time to try Rare beauty and Fenty as I was suspicious! Will now continue watching 😂😂
Before we had celebrities pretending to use skincare they advertised for other companies. Now they do the same for their own brands. Not super convincing for me 🙂
I am always more skeptical of the brand that is put out by a celebrity. I always fear I will pay a premium price for dollar store quality products, or something like the huge holiday sets you can buy for young children that like to play with makeup.
The packaging is also accessible! Essentially every product can be opened using only one hand, or with shaking hands. Big win for people with specific disabilities like lupus (which Selena has).
I'm so impressed with your cooking! I used HF once but since learnt of their anti union actions, so won't use them again. The Brad Pitt thing sounds a bit like they ripped off Caudalie's ranges; a lot is based on grape antioxidants and such...hmmm
I love this series Robert. There are so many cash grabs now within (Every) Industry. In my opinion The Beauty Industry is such a go to , because everyone wants to feel and look their best. Quality over Quantity should always be a standard! Especially if the product is being applied to our SKIN. It's really hard nowadays to separate genuine love for "Skin care & Makeup" versus releasing brands or products, because of a "Celebrity Name."
I don't know or interact with many celebrity brands, but it mostly makes me suspicious. It will probably leave a good impression on me if that person has a certain personality and that get's reflected in the makeup style (not just packaging!).
Thank you to Hello Fresh for helping Robert make a meal that isn't toast! We love you for that - and your delicious meals. Robert, I'm so happy for you. that meal looked great.
I absolutely think attatching a celebrity makes me think the product won't be very good, and also immediatly tells me i'm going to be priced out in most cases. I think the only exceptions to this are Lady Gaga and Rihanna's lines, because you can immediatly tell they were personally invested.
