I grew up in the 80s, you don't realize you're living in the moment until it's gone. God it was a great period, no cellphone, MTV playing music,, stadium concerts, it was truly an iconic age!!!
My parents both graduated high school in ‘84 and I’ve always told them how jealous they were. My mom was listening to Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson etc and my dad was listening to Metallica, Motley Crue, Van Halen etc. I just turned 24 and I still listen to all my songs my parents grew up with. I love it.
I just asked my wife today if she thought our kids would ever read the cereal box for fun in today’s world. We were lucky to be alive back in the 80s. Too bad we didnt know it at the time.
Do yourself a favor and go check out The Warning which is a rock power trio of three sisters. They all sing and each plays their instruments. Guitar, bass, drums and they are all classically trained pianists. Also, their superpower is LIVE! If you go looking, be sure to pick their official released live songs. Suggestions, "Hell You Call A Dream" and "Automatic Sun".
That's exactly what people said about this music in the 80s. Every generation has people crapping on contemporary music and pining over the old stuff as the "real music".
Lol you know what I was a kid in the 80's and was a teen in the 90's. I hated the 80's then. Now, I look back and wish I would have been a teen in the 80's. What a time....
Our music sucked/sucks. It's AWFUL Worse, they never stopped playing it. It went from "hot hits" to "soft rock" to adult contemporary to now being "oldies" 70s music is better in every way. Even disco. 50s music is better too. The only thing I grant is that it's better than what is played on the radio today, which is even worse.
Very beautiful, indeed---but I kept looking at the guitarist---and couldn't figure out what gender...But the end credits say a man...I was born in the 60's, and when punk-ish peeps came out, lotsa them looked either male or female ( didn't like that, much )...But Aimee rocks & looks delightful, I actually tried to have a long braid, like that ( I saw Steve Walsh from KANSAS have one, & tried to emulate ).
@@valeriacortez7003 I've never seen them perform live, but yeah...everyone from my generation knows The Doors ( my brother has all their albums, which now, I have to sell, because he died in 2022 )...In 2000, I was seeing this girl in her early twenties ( & I was in me late 30's )...it was funny, because we were fooling around in bed & she reached over & put on The Doors...she said, " Oh man(!) you gotta hear this band, they're cool " ( but I grew up with that band & knew every song )...So I suppose The Doors keep on being popular with youngers folk, who think they've 'discovered' something 'new'...I actually asked her to put on something I haven't heard a gazillion times, so I could tell she was a tad bummed...or maybe not...
I'm a child of the 70's, teen-ager of the 80's and young adult of the 90's. That period had the best music of the last 50 years, so happy I was around to enjoy it.
@@rlodes1 When considering music's golden era, one must focus on the period from the 1950s through the early 2000s. This era stands out as a pinnacle of musical creativity, diversity, and influence. It's interesting to observe how the first 50 years of a genre often emerge as its most impactful and revered period. During these formative decades, foundational styles and iconic artists shape the genre's identity and legacy. In the context of music, the 1950s to the early 2000s saw a remarkable evolution and fusion of various musical styles. The 1950s introduced rock 'n' roll, jazz, and blues, setting the stage for future innovations. The 1960s and 1970s witnessed the rise of legendary bands like The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, alongside the emergence of Motown and the birth of heavy metal and punk rock. The 1980s brought about the explosion of pop, new wave, and hip-hop, while the 1990s saw the dominance of grunge, alternative rock, and the globalization of electronic music. As we moved into the 21st century, the impact of digital technology and the internet began to reshape the music industry. The early 2000s marked the end of this golden era as traditional methods of music production, distribution, and consumption gave way to new, technology-driven paradigms. While innovation and technological advancements have undoubtedly expanded the possibilities within the music industry, the foundational years from the 1950s to the early 2000s remain unmatched in their cultural and artistic significance.
A bartender in Daytona in 1986. She sang this at the Band Shell in a light rain. Next week it was the Bangles. Next week, Jefferson Starship. MTV ‘s first Run at Spring Break. It was great then. I am so glad I was able to spend my 20’s in the 80’s. We had it made and did not know it. Thank you God for this life and love.
REM at 688 in Atlanta Georgia. B52's and Oingo Boingo at the Agora. Blue Oyster Cult and Foghat at the Omni. Good times. Driving my Ford Maverick with Kansas and The Eagles playing on the 8-track.
We'll, since you think your opinion is a fact, I can do the same.... She is barely attractive at best ...You know this, alba and longoria, are gorgeous...God bless !!
I'm 63 and watching/ listening today (5/8/24) thinking about everything and mostly the friends who were lost. No drug stories. It's been chronic illnesses cancer and diabetes. Couple accidents. Forever thankful for growing up 70's & 80's and the people I knew
The year this song broke out, I was maybe 15 y/o. I traveled to Connecticut from Florida during the summer to work on a farm and put a few sheckles together. I only managed to work about a month and a half before being fired. The morning after I was driven to the airport in Hartford to be flown home. I was carrying my bass guitar with me when out of the blue, SHE walked up to me and told me to loosen my strings so the high altitude wouldnt warp the neck or break the strings on my bass. I flew home to Florida still not realizing who she was until I saw the MTV music video for "Voices Carry" and I was completely floored. It is likely that she saw some skinny kid bass player, who was quite the freak back then, and being the sweet soul she is, took it upon herself to give me some awesome advice. I just wish I had known who she was at the time. Shouldve had her sign my bass. Such a beautiful girl. Love this song.
Cool story, but Aimee's advice was incorrect-pressure changes have no significant effect on stringed instruments or string tension. This is a fallacy. Though sealed containers can be affected by pressure changes (drive through a mountain pass [or down from mountains] with a sealed vessel with air in it [water bottle will do] and open it at the top or bottom, and you'll hear either a release or intake of air). Your bass is not a sealed container, and neither is your case. Also, modern aircraft are pressurized, even in the cargo hold, and cabin altitudes are usually maintained at or less than 8000 feet so that passengers won't experience hypoxia at cruise altitudes. That being said, I love this Til Tuesday performance.
She was like Spinal Tap ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UZ6JxAgmxXg.html . Aimee Mann has had a long career as a brilliant singer songwriter, just not a rock star at the top of the charts.
Aimee Mann has had a phenomenal career as a semi-indy artist. I like Lost in Space and the Magnolia Sountrack, but there's something for everybody. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-323W1GcfcTA.html&ab_channel=NaHg ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Yf3LojyK7PA.html&ab_channel=AimeeMann-Topic
Loved Voices Carry. Seemed like Berlin drowned her out. I was shocked Til Tuesday didn't take off. Loved when they did pop up video and one of the bubbles was the guy who played her boyfriend in the video, who received hate mail, and people in the streets called him a pig. 80s videos cannot be replaced!
Too much to unpack. But here's a start: (1) She's 26 at the Ritz in NYC with more cameras than Rita Hayworth (2) casually checks in with guitarist at :26 (3) adjusts amp volume & tone at :30 (4) makes eye contact with drummer at :36 like "you're the secret sauce this is it" and nails the vocal intro at :41. And then subverts with lyrics, implications and inuendos so profound it took me 33 years to finally grasp. Just incredible. Her stage presence and gorgeous Hollywood imagery demand attention. But her musical prowess is deceptively epic. APEX musician. Period.
I turned 63 a few weeks ago. And I still so well remember "Voices Carry" when it came out in the mid 80s. Such a powerful song for its time. Aimee is amazing.
@@iatsd You are wrong. They are well known outside the US. This song was all over the airwaves in the 80's in the US and elsewhere. A top ten smash hit that put them up there with the best acts of the 80's.
@@nicholasjolt6200 You are delusional. They never made any impact outside north america. They made it to the top 100 in ONE other country, and they never cracked the top 20 ANYWHERE except the US
@@iatsd Once again, you are wrong. The song "Voices Carry" peaked at number 15 on the Australian and Canadian charts in 1985. And the last time I checked; Australia and Canada are not in the US. Your statement " They were largely unknown outside the US" is absolutely false. I don't live in the US, Canada nor Australia but I can assure you that their single " Voices Carry," sold like hot cakes in my country and numerous other countries in South America, having received copious airplay in 1985.
@@nicholasjolt6200 well done - you spotted that. now, tell me all about how cracking the top 20 *once* in *one* country equates to "well known all over the world"? Face it, when people think about "new wave" NO ONE ON THE PLANET thinks about American groups.
WOW! You can't take your eyes off her, she's mesmerizing! The hair, the eyes, the moves, the voice....Jesus! Vaguely remember this from my youth but never heard it live. That was huge.
Aimee Mann is Amazingly Talented. She had an amazing voice and is a fantastic guitarist. She's still as hot as she was in 1986 too....beautiful voice and eyes.
70's and 80's were the greatest music decades. So many great bands, and then the iconic one hit wonders with songs that live clear into today. Was so great to be young for those years. Today's music doesn't hold a candle.
This song came out in my country while I was in the army just towards the end of training. Then I was posted to the operational area in Angola and never saw civilization again for nine months. Casevaced out of Angola and after some time in hospital I was sent home to a completely different world. My younger sister was out of school, my parents divorced, my older sister and her husband separated. I had 6 weeks of accumulated leave and recovery leave and in that time I became a recluse and tried to catch up on the music scene. This song I must have listened to a thousand times and every time I hear it I'm taken back to that time when I was almost killed in a stupid and unnecessary war and my entire life was changed forever yet I was grateful to still be alive. Today I'm friends with former enemies from Russia, Cuba and Namibia and can go to former battlefields where I lost friends, comrades and even family and sit there thinking how everything could've ended for me all those years ago and how I changed yet this song is one of those that helped me recover. the mental scars are there but I can cope so thank you Till Tuesday. You guys are awesome!
@@coreyzimmerman9782 That is Robert Holmes from England on guitar. Great guitarist. I had the pleasure of working with Robert before he was in Til Tuesday when he lived near Boston. He's just as terrific a guy as well.
Aimee Mann and this band were underappreciated. This is a really a great live performance. No stupid dancing or autotune -- the hair was amazing! I was 25 when this video was made. To this day, the 80s music is still my favorite, crossing multiple genres. Things are much different now.
She did a lot of solo work on the soundtrack for the movie Magnolia. Many people feel she was robbed of the Oscar that year. From Wiki: "Save Me" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song;[1] Mann performed it at the 72nd Academy Awards.[2] It lost to "You'll Be in My Heart", by Phil Collins, from the Disney movie Tarzan. By way of introduction to a live performance, Mann has referred to "Save Me" as "the song that lost an Oscar to Phil Collins and his cartoon monkey love song."[3] "Save Me" was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal;[1]
@@randrozguidroz6485 I turned 72 this winter and I still can't believe it-for all the talk about drugs killing you young I stand as the exception...LOL..
I fortunately was in my 20's during the WONDERFUL 80'S ( born 1960 ). I was going to college at UCLA and working as a seasonal lifeguard. I remember well the GREAT music, going to the hottest dance clubs ( Florentine Gardens in Hollywood). I was young, in my prime... Now, I'm an 'old man " at 62, and this song indeed brings back some very bittersweet memories .... So long, my wonderful youth.... 💔
Florentine Gardens? Didn't get around much, huh? Plastic Passion in Hollywood, Viola' in Beverly Center, Stratus (Kind of far away in San Diego, but very cool)....the list goes on...
god, you sound so old and out of touch. Sad. I was playing in this era too. was signed. There are as many good musicians now, as then. In many ways more proficient due to so much teaching material available. Want better music,..? stop expecting you will find it on the radio made for 20 year olds.
@@ronniedudley2697yeah some girls have them. Do you think she’s a him’s ? I bet your mom, sister , or wife ain’t that fucking hot. You’re a homophob ronnie w your androgynous name. Are you a dude w no adams apple and you’re jealous? Wtf
Fun fact. This song was written about a lesbian relationship, but the record company frowned upon that theme, so Amiee rewrote it with a man as the focal point.
This is what you call, showing up for your Big Moment in your life, their first gig in NYC, & absolutely Nailing it "on the screws", as they say in Baseball! Aimee was the total Professional here, voice, looks, & playing solid Bass Guitar, come on now!? Makes me cry every time.
I can't think of another live performance as cool and mesmerizing as this, Great song, great guitar, great voice and great hair. The whole thing is pretty stunning.
Check out The tubes "she's a beauty" live from San Fransisco in 1983. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CM6V8TzEkv4.htmlsi=XXmxDtasxJ-rmr6g
I love this version; somehow Her voice is better on this live take, than on the record version. True talent comes out in live performances. She is really good here! Thanks for sharing!
Wow! What a way to end it. That brings back memories of the 80s. I was in my 30s and it was unbelievable! What a sensual allure and captivating stage presence. And an awesome bass player.
73 years old now, heard part of this song a few days ago somewhere (RU-vid, radio, who knows), remembered the New Wave keyboards and hunted it down. Voices Carry is now on my playlist. So glad I re-found it.
I saw Aimee in Chicago opening for Squeeze in the late or mid 1990's. She did not do this song. I believe she was sick of it and trying to change her image.
Me too bro! Smoking hot '80s icon of a woman. Her voice was mesmerizing and to a weird degree, almost personal as if she was singing to us directly. Thanks for the walk down memory lane, truly good times! 👍
I was 7 years old at this time, I remember the 80s being a great time in life. No one seemed to struggle, people got along better and things just seemed to happier... The sky was a deeper blue and the summer sunsets looked so much more beautiful.... Damn I wish it was still like that today
Imagine being 25 years and writing songs like Voices Carry and What about Love…such a talented band…each one of them brought something special to this band called Till Tuesday.
She is now getting her due, today she is finally getting more recognition for how beautiful she really is as a song writer and a performer with her old band. Til' Tuesday ": God Bless Aimee Mann
Sounds as good live as it does on record. She's got a great voice and a beautiful face. Classic song. Can't believe how many years have slipped away since this song came out.
