Tile Installation Expansion Joints Are Critical

Every tile job needs expansion joints, also known as movement joints, they are critical to the success and longevity of the tile installation. Too many tile installations are done without consideration to how tile will expand and contract with the change of temperature and humidity, and not only the tile surface, but the building itself. If there is no room for movement where tile meets a wall or some other hard object that will not move, then when movement does occur, and it will, something has to give, and it will usually be the tile installation. Tenting or popping of tiles is the end result when the tile floor needs to grow, but has no room for that to happen.

akakiashi That is more common than you might think, they think that tike does no expand, no matter how small movement might be, it adds up to quite a bit over long runs of tile, enough to cause it to fail.

Thank you for the great information. Cracking in one spot happened after 17 years in my tiled kitchen, then 10 days later 18 tiles tented. The cracking sounds were so loud and pretty frightening at the time, especially before we knew what it was. We had to remove all the tile (approximately 900 sq ft) and were surprised that there was no cracking in the foundation. There were no signs of expansion joints. We’re replacing with hardwood this time. Again, thanks for the info.

Happens more often than you think, lack of movement joints will cause tenting. Can happen after a week or years later. Look up ANSI EJ171.

Sal, love your vids. very informative. I have questions regarding outdoor tile installation regarding this very topic. The video makes sense but I live in Florida in the palm beach area. so we have a lot of humidity. The existing tile that I have was directly installed on concrete with no anti-cracking membrane, and as a result, there are a lot of popped tiles and various cracking throughout. The area is on the front porch under shade but exposed to the elements of heat and humidity. It's roughly 300 sq ft. Of course, I will be removing the existing tile and I believe I should put an anti-cracking membrane like Protecto whisper mat or the Schluter. In regards to expansion and contraction, what do you recommend to ensure a proper installation? Are the parameters different than an indoor install? Finally, does the material whether it be porcelain, ceramic, or stone affect the expansion and contraction differently? Thanks again. Any tips would be appreciated.
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 6 лет назад
Outdoor or exposed areas need expansion every 8 to 12 feet in both directions in addition to perimeter movement joints. Tile needs to be rated for outdoors and the substrate should be suitable for tile. I never do outside work because with freeze that it is just too risky.
@haroon420
@haroon420 3 года назад
Shouldn’t the tile uncoupling membrane account for and stop any movement??? I’m assuming the green stuff is an uncoupling membrane.
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 3 года назад
Uncoupling protects from movement of the substrate. The house will still expand and contract, the tile will also do that, you need to leave room around the perimeter and in the field to accommodate that. Uncoupling does not stop the movement, it absorbs and neutralizes it. It can't stop the how the entire structure, including the tile, grows and contracts.
